To Capture a World

| xxx | The first place Lottie went with her new camera was the lake. Every time she had passed by it since her first year, she had been struck with an overwhelming desire to somehow take all of its beauty and keep it for herself. Perhaps that was greed, or perhaps it was love, but either way, she now had a method of doing so. After breakfast, she had quickly cleaned up and departed to the grounds, the camera secured around her neck. She had taken a few test shots out in the courtyard, admiring the lovely mechanical sounds the camera made each time it took a shot and playing with the few settings it had. Once she was sure she knew how to handle it, she had hurried down along the beaten path to the lake. Much to her disappointment, however, the lack of sun and the dryness of Fall made the landscape appear... less than picture-worthy. The water was still as stone, and the surrounding grass was still a bit soggy from the rainfall that swept through the night prior. Lottie caught a brief shot of a passing crow, but couldn't seem to find anything worth the snap. She felt oddly as though she was betraying her sister by not utilizing the camera more, finding beauty in the mundane as her sister had always praised her for managing to do. With a sigh, she flopped down onto the grass, cradling the camera in her lap and running her thumb over its jagged edges. A breeze brushed through the field, sending chills up her spine and making the leaves rustle in protest. Lottie wrapped her sweater closer around her frame, the goosebumps on her arms almost painfully hard. There had to be something worth taking a picture. So much space and opportunity, and yet Lottie couldn't find a shred of beauty in all the darkness. | xxx |
