parts over Christmas Eve and Christmas Day

Most of that cold winter morning Leo spent in the comfort of his room with Perse, playing with her and reading. He was happy to be back in his own room, surrounded by the familiar dark blue walls, bookshelf of books he had read and his own soft, warm blankets on his bed. Perse seemed to be happy too to be able to run around freely and play.

At some point in the early afternoon he was pulled from his solitude by his sister, Maya, to join her and their grandmother down in the kitchen. “Come on Lee lee,” she called him over with the familiar nickname Maya had called him growing up. Spread out across the kitchen island was all different colors of decorating icing and the smell of the fresh baked cookies filled the entire room, even before he got in there. “We’re going to make gingerbread cookies!” Maya beamed from her seat. “여기 앉아, 내 천사 sit here, my angel.” His grandmother said with a smile as she brought over some sheet pans filled with the baked gingerbread cookies. Leo gave a small nod and went over to sit beside his sister. The trio began piping hats, scarves, boots, buttons and faces on each cookie. While it was different than the art he usually did, Leo was happy to be able to use his little creative side on the decorations making his cookies some of the best looking ones.

“와 완벽하다 wow, perfect.” His grandmother said, patting Leo’s head gently as she looked over his decorating. Maya leaned over to look at his and nodded in agreement, “Wow, they really do look great, Leo.” She said with a smile before finishing the last one in front of her. “Thank you.” Leo said, smiling shyly from the compliments. Once he finished he sat back and stretched his arms up, his hands hurting slightly from the precise piping he had been working so hard on. “How about a little treat for the job well done.” His grandmother brought over three fish shaped pastries, one of the Korean treats he loved growing up. “고마워요 thank you.“ He said, looking at his grandmother with a bright smile before taking a big bite of the custard filled treat. Spending time like this was definitely something he missed while at school, even though he knew tomorrow would be a different story with all of the family coming to his house for Christmas.

Dinner was nothing out of the ordinary for the Noxley’s, some quiet chatting throughout the meal. Maya talked about her adventures while Max teased Leo a little until their mother scolded him. After dinner, Leo changed into the Christmas pajamas that his mother gifted him, a tradition they did every year for all three of the children to get matching pajamas to wear Christmas Eve. Leo went down to the sitting room where the others were sitting around the fireplace as the fire warmed the room up. “Aw, look at how adorable you look.” His mother said with a smile. Leo couldn’t help but roll his eyes a little at the comment and went to sit on the sofa in front of the windows. As he went to take a seat he looked out and noticed the ground had begun getting covered in a white dusting as more delicate white snowflakes fell down from the dark night sky. “Look! It’s snowing!” He said, pointing outside and quickly kneeled on the sofa, resting his elbows on the back to look out at the pretty winter scene.
