Return of the Omen

“Hans?”
The doors bursted open before him to spill out a ghastly figure, clearly in a hurry, seemingly out of her right mind. A ghostly-white sheet of a nightgown covering all skin and bones, a rattling skeleton from the underworlds animated to give him hell. Perhaps what was considered beauty for the stray passersby turned into a sick veneer for the shattered pieces that laid underneath. It was as if her skin was desperately trying to cling onto what was left of rotten flesh. Clothes contrasting deeply with her sheen of coal black hair, the stark difference made her locks either seem very dark or her skin seem far too pallid.
Perhaps that was the perfect description. After all, Meiyu Xiang was very ill. Why else would anyone invite the boy who had punched them to a summer retreat at their manor? From her first maniacal ramblings in her cursed letters and his attempts to relieve her of her suffering to their first meeting in France, where Hans’ aid was only met with denial, and further rising his vexation, insult. How she called him a people pleaser with trauma and how that remark still resonated in his head. Because of wrong it is, because of how wrong she was. The most despicable aspect above all, however, was her blatant refusal for help. He genuinely hoped she had been checked into a psych ward.
All his care had gone to waste, and now, crawling back for some comfort, was Meiyu, desperately clinging to any shreds of their friendship. What a pathetic thought, her attachment to him. She ha grasped onto him as if he was the only friend she had, so pitiful the inequality of their relationship was. He could punch her — physically and emotionally — and she would still come back, licking her wounds. She just wanted more of him for her crooked emotional fulfilment. He was far from the beloved she had deemed her to be; they were trapped in a cycle of befuddlement, madness, and abuse, and Hans was sinking in the quagmire.
In her state of chimera he had debated whether or not to entertain her deluded notions. To go back was only to fuel their toxic mess of a relationship. He knew he had to cut it off, burn the Hydra’s neck before it kept growing beyond control, before it sprouted another head and another problem. He ought to leave while he had the chance, ought to have declined. That had been his only way out. Why would he want to meet her again? After that thing she had called Hans, after all of it — how could he forgive her? But he did not forgive her; he pitied her, and there was a difference of a thousand miles in that.
Deep inside, he still cared for her in that twisted way of his, the same way he cared for anyone who needed help. Beneath her crazed surface was just a thirteen year old girl who had no idea what she was doing, wide eyed and terrified. She was a murderer, Hans kept reminding himself, but her soul too had been mercilessly slaughtered into the rotten core it was now. Dhe was everything Hans did not want to be, everything he had pushed away, everything he knew he should reject. She didn’t deserve any of the pain, just as much as Hans didn’t deserve dealing with her. But… despite everything, he still wanted to fix her because he thought she was broken.
She was not proving to Hans that she had gotten better. This was not the reconciliation he had expected, and they were barely seconds into their meeting. Everything, said a gut feeling in his stomach, was going so fearfully wrong.
She looked like a little girl as she sprinted to fling open the doors, footsteps resonating even to the boy standing outside. Perhaps that was the point—she was a little girl. In her rush, blushing, she looked bashful almost. She had not been bashful when he had aggravated Hans so much he turned to violence. Her excitement was a surprise. He did not known what to expect from Meiyu anymore, but her keenness to see him was not one of them. He had thought there will be a few moments of awkward silence, before an apology was given — hers — rather than some giddy, immature girl excited to meet him. Perhaps he should have guessed nothing will go out the way he had thought. It was Meiyu after all.
Finally, he spoke in response to the calling of his name by returning with Meiyu’s. “Meiyu Xiang.” The words were pointed, with the precision of someone who had practiced the pronunciation. His face was unreadable, features perfectly poised. He did not want to give away any signals of emotion, because as soon as he did, Meiyu would grasp onto them and manipulate to her leverage, interpreting them in all the wrong ways until it fit her twisted idea of what she thought their relationship was. He did not want anything he did to be used so crudely as Meiyu would. He did not want to give her the opportunity to only disappoint herself.
Pushing her aside slightly from her position fixed at the doorway in surprise, Hand entered the manor as casually as if it was his own, stopping after a few paces, boots planted squarely on the wooden floor. He did not glance around at his surroundings, much less gawk, certainly not in the way Meiyu had at him when she first saw him, after all these months apart. He did not speak a word either, simply looked at her with a glance of half disregard, half distaste bordering on disgust, inquiring for the purpose of his visit, all the way from Germany.
As he turned to fully face the girl, he only stared blankly at Meiyu, as if to demand, Well?

Return of the Omen
Was this what their relationship would amount to? Unrequited distrust that hummed like a quiet grenade, paired with unrequited obsession that burnt like a wildfire in the depths of night. From their first acquaintance through letters, how Meiyu had deemed him foolish for reaching out, and the unsupported concern he had displayed for her even when she sat oblivious, to their first meeting at Beauxbatons, where both had held high hopes only to be met with low realities, and the final, gut-wrenching words accompanied by a gut-wrenching punch. And then, and the unsalvageable end, an invitation. With the surreal twists and turns of their relationship, from mania to delusion, from love to hatred, perhaps Hans ought not be surprised that he stood here, at the door, wordless.
Meiyu had turned towards him only to glower; the way her eyes narrowed as she searched for some semblance of warmth in his features was naïve. He was determined to remain in his cold persona, to not allow her to savour any sense of joy in him, any fleeting hope that they could build the burnt bridges back to where they once stood. Perhaps it was a futile hope, but it existed within him nevertheless, no matter his fervent denial to his heart. Hans wished deeply for the prosperity of their friendship, only for it to be ruined by Meiyu’s deluded nature and lack of psychiatrical assistance, distraught and detached. He ached imagining himself in her shoes, the world refusing to understand, the only helping hand being batted away by manic choices. Perhaps the girl he had acquainted himself with was still in her, desperately imploring for help under a mask of insanity.
Hans wavered at the entrance. It was normal, he decided, to waver at the entrance of the room of a girl proven to be a psychopath. With the invitation so unprompted, and after such violence, it would have surprised him if she harboured only good intentions. Already displaying that she had it in her, this could very well be a death trap. Armed only with a trusted Swiss Army knife, his own fists, and a sharp tongue where he needed it, his arsenal of weapons was far from developed. What would become of him he were killed here, in such a pathetic fashion?
Peace had been his hope, but violence would be utilised once more if called for. Despite gravitating towards pacifism he saw no shame in self-defence, and if worst comes to worst and such measures were necessary, he would have no qualms in hurting her via fending for his own safety. Perhaps it had been a mistake to come at all, perhaps he had been asking for enmity when he arrived at her doorstep. His spite was not out of intent but what bordered on instinct, the rising of defences around a heart he had once graciously opened, only to receive the treatment of Meiyu’s criticisms.
A people pleaser with trauma.
One does not so easily forget.
She had slipped out a remark, one that she quickly showed remorse for, but one that caused a brow to rise nevertheless, Must I remind you that you are here on your own accord? His volition could be questioned, but he did not argue — it was too soon for disruption. Instead, he merely nodded with the casualness of a musing parrot, oddly wordless for a boy so boisterous, dangerously wordless.
Hans’ attention drifted to the spider on her nightgown instead [what an odd choice of animals, he thought; though perhaps an odd companion was only fitting for an odd girl], until the summer breeze brought Meiyu back to her senses and Hans back to her gaze. She smiled, and offered pleasantries, all clearly feigned. Hans had waved his hand aimlessly, as if telling her to get the saccharine words out of his face. There was a keenness to the manner she chimed in disturbance to their shared thoughts, and while Hans welcomed the respite, he was tired of her sickly sweetness. A few more days of this hell, he reminded himself, the least he could do was to be better than his hostess.
They had trekked through her home and up the staircase, her lodgings with an expected grandiosity. He followed in her wake, and at her question regarding his stay, he nodded reluctantly and provided some form of affirmation, however hesitant. When they reached the top landing and Meiyu slipped into her room to change, Hans regarded the rest of the manor with a critical eye, leaning on the wall beside her door. He allowed his thoughts to drift.
“Come in.”
He stepped into her room, head held at a particular angle of entitlement. “Tell me, Meiyu Xiang,” he said, once more using her full name as his eyes flicked up and down, “What is the purpose of my visit?”
