On Brooms and Racing

Hi.

This is already coming out weird but if I wait till it isn’t weird I’m never going to send it, so whatever.

Hi, @Dealla Prince.

So. You’re really cool on a broom. I only started properly watching broom racing recently – before that it was just “Quidditch is fine I guess but why isn’t there basketball here” and a lot of sulking in the stands. Then I saw you race and my brain went “oh, that, I want to do that,” which is probably how bad ideas start.

You make it look…sharp. Fast, but not just “go fast and pray.” Like you actually know what you’re doing instead of nearly falling off every time the broom twitches. (Unlike me. Mostly.) When someone told me you’re also on the Ravenclaw duelling team I was like “yeah, that tracks.”

I kind of want to try broom racing now, but I don’t want to end up in the hospital wing. Again.

So I wanted to ask:

How did you go from duelling into broom racing?

Did you start with anything specific when you were learning, or did you just jump in and hope for the best?

Is there a way to practice that doesn’t get you yelled at by the teachers or banned from the pitch?

I keep thinking to myself like "I can totally do this". And then I remember that I also thought that before the stair incident. And the library incident. And the incident with the bees. Annnnnd thing with the broom shed that we don't talk about. And that's not really motivating.

Anyway, it's entirely up to you. I'd still really like to hear how you got into it and what it's like on the team, if you feel like talking about it. If not, that's okay too. I'll just go back to nearly falling off my broom and leave you in peace.

Sorry this is weird.

Hi!

Don't worry, I've written worse letters. You've got this.

Hi, Camila Carter.

Why, thank you! (See, this is already a great start. Flattery usually works on me.) Although I've gotta say I'm not surprised that racing impressed you if Quidditch is your point of reference. You get all the violence with the added thrill of magic, and without anything as ridiculous as a golden Snitch.

I find that praying doesn't usually help very much, so my strategy is to try and avoid running into trees. Although I'm not sure how well that applies to Quidditch, since from what I've seen, running into other people is usually the goal there. (That sounds like you might need a new broom.)

Jokes aside, I prefer precision over brute strength, so maybe that's where the "sharpness" comes from? Or it's my sharp wit and snazzy uniform And you probably already have a headstart on me, since I only started flying when I started racing. Brooms should only twitch when you make them twitch, though. Are you a twitchy kind of person?

Switching from duelling to racing was a pretty big change, except for the parts that aren't really different at all. Sorry, that probably wasn't helpful. The flying is new, the casting I could do in my sleep, and because no one ever seems to expect it, people are actually much easier to hit than I'm used to from duelling.

So my training focused on the flying part and - this might sound counterintuitive - I practised falling first. I figured it was inevitable that I was going to get knocked off my broom every now and then, so my priority was learning to do it in a way that avoids major injuries in the process. Getting used to falling also means you're less scared and less likely to freeze up when someone comes for you. So you fall, you land, you get up and try again.

I'm very intrigued by all those incidents you mentioned. Please elaborate. But no matter what they might indicate, I'm pretty sure you can do it. Flying is no witchcraft - well, it sort of is, I guess. You know what I mean.

If you want to talk about this more at some point, come look me up at the Ravenclaw table during meals. I'm always happy to chat.

Very flattered regards,
Dee Prince

PS: You should teach me basketball at some point.
