Such a cold evening it was. Although the air was not cold enough that snowflakes felt the need to descend from the sky in their angelical and ethereal forms, students could buff and see their breath, and a thick coat was obligatory to every person in a normal state of mind. In such days, people who hated the outdoors and the magical feeling of flying on a broom hoped that they would not have to attend to Flying today.
Anna was one of those people, and she still didn't get over today's flying lesson. She hated flying, hated brooms, hated the feeling of not having both her feet on the ground in such a fragile object that could break so easily. What if she got hurt? Injuries weren't pretty. And she hated the emotion and unpredictability of flying. Unexpectedly, she may have been one of Mister Weems's worst students so far, which is quite a shame, the man himself was a good person and she wished she could bring him joy.
Although that has not happened in any day at all during her two years in Hogwarts, she still hoped maybe one day flying class got canceled. Maybe one day...
But enough of that! After such a experience, she deserves some calm and peace. Why not do two of her ever-favorite activities? She could dress up and go read in Hogwarts's library. Of coursh, she both read and dressed up almost every day, but it brought her some security to do something she was so used to, especially because she enjoyed it no matter how many times she repeated these activities.
In such a cold weather, one who picked their outfits well could look more elegant and cute than any other, and so after some minutes of analysing, she picked a brown dress with combining boots; they were adorable, and that's how Anna liked to feel: as though she was the loveliest, most adorable person in the world. Not that this ever brought her comparison issues; comparing herself negatively to others is not something the girl could naturally do, though she still admired other people and learnt from them. Because her hair was messy after that appalling flying lesson, she had to style it again, every lock of hair carefully hydrated and curled to the best of Anna's abilities. Once she was overdressed and ready, she took her loyal plushie companion, the stuffed penguin Aoibheann, and left the common room. These days, she waived him a Slytherin tie, so now he had one around his neck to complement his judgemental gaze... Well, at least that's what the black-haired girl thinks he'd have, at least.
She walked through the crowded castle until she arrived to the library, which was certainly one of the places she voluntarily spent the most time in. These days she had seen someone reading a book with a beautiful cover and a intriguing title, and she could not help but inquire about it; from the spoiler-free synopsis she received, that book was a rare jewel of deep philosophy, critical reflection and addicting prose. Today, she wondered if that book would be found around the shelves. She looked through three rows of shelves before she finally found the desired book, between a smaller book and an empty space. With a victorious smile, Anna extended her hand to obtain her prize, her (assumedly) lovely story of fiction; poetry hidden behind every word, philosophy that only gets deeper between every chapter. Were her expectations too high? Perhaps. But she couldn't help to feel excited.
...However, just as she touched the book and began pulling it to her direction, she felt a force doing the opposite, pulling it to the other side of the shelf. Anna looked through the empty space behind her book, and saw something she hadn't seen before. More specifically, someone. Perhaps she wasn't there before, maybe Anna was too absorbed in her own thoughts to realize. But the fact is, there was a girl who also picked the same book at the same time as Anna, and she looked taller and stronger than the second-grader. The little Blackberry still did not let go, and instead threw a dirty look, as though only she could choose an intriguing book during free time, and although it did waver looking at that girl's shiny hair, still Anna spoke, with more firmness than asperity:
"You can't pick this one. I already chose it."
Ah, yes, gatekeeping. Truly the loveliest, most adorable behavior of all.

To gatekeep a book
Callie twisted her way through the halls, running. She was late to a meeting, an important one too. She wove her way around students and teachers alike, calling out 'Sorry!' every time she bumped into someone. Finally, she made her way to the library. Callie stopped, and checked her watch. Damn, I'm late, She thought. Might as well read. Callie signed with the librarian, and walked over to the shelves. She ran her hand over the spines. Hogwarts books were gems, and she was determined to read them all. The librarian had recommended a poetry book, and she was excited to read it. Callie had forgotten what row it was in, so she decided to start from the start. First row had an interesting book on brooms, but it wasn't it. Neither was the book on house-elves, or the book on muggle cities. Might have to read that, to check. Callie thought. She refocused, and at last found the book. She ran her hand over the spine, and pulled. But, it was surprisingly hard to get out. Was it wedged? No, that wouldn't be right. She saw a face poke out from the empty space. A girl, much shorter than Callie, with black hair and glasses, pulling too. The girl side-eyed her and kept pulling. Then she spoke, her Irish accent ringing out. 'You can't pick this one, I already chose it.'

Callie laughed. 'If the book was yours, you'd have it reserved. Yet, it's on the shelf. Lucky someone else didn't take it.'
Callie gave one firm tug, and the book fell into her hands. She saw the Hufflepuff standing there, a look of anger on her face. She felt a pang of guilt for being so rude.
'Look, sorry about that, but I've been waiting so long to read this. I'll read the first page. If I like it, I'll read it here, and give it to you when I finish. If I don't like it, I'll give it to you, okay? I'm Callie. Full name Calypso.'
She offered her hand as a sign of peace, but knew the girl wouldn't take it.

Anna's expression hardened a little at the taller girl's reminder that the book wasn't hers. Although she DID know that, she certainly felt more intensely about that book than... As soon as Anna realized she didn't know that girl's name, she happened to introduce herself. "Calypso". A mystical name, one that should have been given to an important moon that shone upon the romantics in the nights and embellished their lights. Unfortunately, only a small moon was named that way. And yet, beautiful celestial bodies, bigger, shinier and of greater importance, receive numbers and letters instead of a name like "Calypso". Such a waste.
Anan took long to consider what Calypso said, though in most part it's because she always took a little longer to process what other people said. She didn't like Calypso's early remark, especially not with that laugh, but it was undeniable she was right, even though her heart desired for that book more than anything else right now; the book wasn't in her possession. She still wanted it, though.Calypso did apologize for potentially having been rude with Anna, and introduced herself along with an offer: reading the first page of the book and then deciding to read it in the library now or just give it to the gatekeeping hufflepuff, depending on whether or not the brunette would enjoy the book. It felt fair, to some degree, but still the shorter shook her head in disagreement, though it was not the offer itself she wanted to contest.
"The first page is never enough to define the rest of the book. You should read the first chapter at least, and then decide if you want to give it to me or not."
Other than this detail, she found the offer even reasonable, regardless of how possessive she felt about that book, which she never read, never put her hands on and would have never known about if she hadn't stumbled upon it when it already was on someone else's hands. That, too, is a feeling she found completely valid and justifiable. Yet, she rejected her peer's handshake in favor of doing a dainty curtsy in response, as she found it more elegant for a girl. To do such, she swept her foot behind her body (causing her foot to uncomfortably brush against the shelf behind her), bowed her head and bent her knees, finishing her gesture by holding her dress out. Then, she introduced herself with delicate politeness and firm assertiveness.
"My name is Anna Jasmine Blackberry. I'm the eldest daughter of the Auror Bethany Amelie Blackberry and Jacob Theodore Blackberry, who works in the Ministry of Magic, in Quill Control and Rune Translation."
Then she quickly put her hands and foot back in place, and looked up at Calypso again with no more frustration now. Anna's expression turned completely blank while introducing herself, as she has been doing this same introduction for years and was now used to changing her facial expression to a more neutral one.
"...We could read the book together, you know."
When she doesn't look at people as though they have committed crimes against her family, she looks much friendlier, with her big round eyes and squeaky voice.
