Dear Mam,
Greetings from Hogwarts! Sorry I haven't written in a while---coursework has been picking up, and I've actually managed to make a few friends, so they have also been occupying my time. (More on that later. I know you read that and gasped aloud, so give me at least some benefit of a moment to update you on events as of recently.) But I figured I would write to you now because, well, as you very well know, it's my birthday today! I'm finally twelve. Which I find odd, as it feels like I just turned eleven yesterday, but also like I've been waiting for a century to spin around the Sun once more, so I can't really be complaining, I suppose. Maybe my sense of time is just skewed.

On recent events. Back in October, they held a ball. And I went. I know. Can you believe it? Your middle daughter, as anti-social as I am,
attended a ball. I mean really! What's next, I profess that I'm actually a fashion major and that I plan to drop out of school to follow that dream? (We both know how horridly that would end for me. I digress.) No, I didn't have a date, much to Aisling's disappointment. I sort of just...hung around with people I'd met from classes and such. Stuck to the background, watched everyone else---it's far easier than having to socialize and act like I enjoyed it. As far as I know, nobody spiked the punch, so I'll call that a win.

Speaking of people I met in class. I have...I think I can officially total the number at three. I have three friends! Two of whom are first-years like me---one girl, one boy---and one of whom is older (that M guy I was talking about in my last letter; his name is Mamori, so I'm glad I remembered it this time). The girl's name is Tatiana, and she's in Hufflepuff, like Mamori. Which, from all I can gather, is the house for people who have attachment issues in both the good and bad sense. They're loyal to a fault, and God help anyone who hurts what they devote their loyalty and attention to. The boy's name is Cane, and he's also in Gryffindor, with me. We met that first night here; neither of us could sleep and both of us wanted to sit in front of the fire, so we did. Coincidentally, he also has a leather notebook. This was, of course, a topic of bonding.

Though I suppose it's safe to say I might be making a few enemies as well. This one boy, Aeron...he's so self-righteous and rude, acting like he's better than anyone else just because he's only ever had wizards in his family---something I've learned is called being "pure-blooded", which is honestly preposterous, because we're all human and we all bleed the same, so how can magical lineage make somebody's bloodline "purer" than anyone else's? I don't know. But he got on my nerves and so I might have kindly educated him on foxglove when given the opportunity. Don't tell Finlay, he'll have a fit.

I know you've been busy, so it's perfectly fine if you forgot my birthday---Aisling is getting me a gift from the small town outside of the grounds called Hogsmeade. I just wanted to write and tell you that I love you very dearly. Kisses for Alba and hugs for Dad! I love you, Mam. Be home soon for Christmas!

Love from your favorite chemist,

Luna-Katherine
