1ST YEAR

aeron slipped inside classroom with hands in his pockets. there were first-years already sitting at desks. he ignored them.
the professor stepped in without much ceremony. aeron listened as they talked about what the class would cover — curses, jinxes, basic protective spells. honestly, it all sounded like a lot of words and gestures. he’d seen spells before, but nothing felt urgent yet. he leaned back in his chair, arms crossed loosely, watching the other students fumble with wands and practice motions.
“first, we’ll start with shield charms,” the professor said, demonstrating a simple flick and incantation. sparks shot from the wand and hit a small practice dummy. aeron raised an eyebrow. he could do that, sure.
he tried it mimicking the motions. a faint shimmer appeared around the dummy, enough to make it quiver. he didn’t care about result,he wasn’t here to impress anyone.
a few moments later, one of the other first-years yelped when their spell went wrong. aeron glanced over “you’re going to burn yourself out before lunch,” he muttered under his breath. no one heard and he didn’t particularly care if they did.
the lesson moved on. the professor explained jinxes that could trip someone, hexes that could temporarily blind, curses that should only ever be used in extreme situations. aeron listened politely, he practiced not letting excitement show. he wanted to learn, but only enough to be effective. he wasn’t interested in showing off.
at one point a student accidentally sent a spell ricocheting across the room. it hit the edge of a desk with a loud crack. aeron flicked his wand lazily and muttered an incantation to correct it that he read in one book. the desk stopped moving.a few students glanced at him with quiet awe.
the bell eventually rang. aeron straightenedplacing wand vack in pocket. the other students hurried out, talking excitedly about how scary or fun the class had been.
Pure Blood, Pure Power
1ST YEAR
I walk into the classroom and take a seat in the middle row, safe enough to be seen and not called on, but safe enough to also not look like I'm trying to sleep through the class. The class lesson seemed fairly easy- or so I thought.
"I can do this, I'm a Slytherin after all." I mumble to myself as I raise my wand and flick my wrist as I speak the incantation, but before I knew it, instead of a shield appearing in front of me, a small spark flicked off my wand, surprising me and causing me to yelp. That's when I hear a voice and look up- a Gryffindor boy is scowling in my direction and I watch his lips move.
"You're going to burn yourself out before lunch." My eyes widen at his rude comment. He spoke what he thought was quiet, but I could just make out what he said, making me embarrassed as I sat back down and muttered to myself about how embarrassing that was.
Is this what a rivalry is like? I hadn't imagined the Hogwarts houses could set people so far apart from one another. I swallowed my embarrassment as the class neared the end and began reciting the spell, determined to get it right, afterall, my pride was slightly hurt. As the class clears out, I remain at my desk, continuing to recite and practice the spell, trying over and over again to get that perfect shield the earlier Gryffindor boy had.
