A Rough Start

Most of the classroom had emptied by now, so Percival sat alone at one of the front tables with his sleeves rolled up and his wand resting beside a half-finished cauldron. A faint trail of steam curled from its surface, carrying the scent of the ingredients he had already used in this concoction.
After tossing in another ingredient, he leaned forward to check the color. It was close to what the book described but not quite there yet. The Antidote for Common Poisons was supposed to turn teal, but his looked just a little too green. He frowned and looked back at the open page beside him.
“What did I do wrong...” he muttered under his breath while glancing between his book and his ingredients. He sighed, then stirred his potion slowly, counting each turn, trying to make the mixture settle into what it was supposed to be. His last few attempts at making the potion hadn't gone too well, but this time, it at least looked somewhat promising.
And he knew, somehow, he had to get really good at this subject. It was one of the requirements to become an Auror, after all.
Then, just as he set his spoon down to study his book again, he heard the echo of footsteps approaching from the corridor behind him. He wasn't expecting any other students, but it wasn't uncommon for others to practice after class either.
He wondered who it'd be this time.

These professors brains were full of worms, Chada just knew it. They had some unruly audacity, making her come help some brat who couldn't even do a simple potion. How was he still there long after class ended and still couldn't figure it out? Oh, goodness gracious, there was nothing she hated more than incompetence. It agitated the girl to no end, it only made her think of her parents, and that was not what she wanted to think about while at Hogwarts, she had enough stress. The sound of a miserable, whiny voice greeted her ears as she came down the hallway, making her roll her eyes. With very little respect for the building, and even less for the boy in the room, Chada threw open the classroom doors with a scowl on her lips. Automatically, her eyes locked onto the short Slytherin boy. He was the only one in the room, so this was clearly who the professor told her to check up on. Her scowl deepened in unabashed irritation, her hand glued to a jutted out hip. "You!" Chada pointed a manicured finger at the shrimp as she strutted closer, stopping at least ten feet away with a sneer on her lips now. "You're still here? You can't fix stupid, so pack it up and go to your room, brat." The boy clearly lacked the proper dignity of a pureblood, despite being in Slytherin like her, and it just made Chada feel disgusted. She had to share her spaces with a mudblood who couldn't even figure out a simple potion. With a glance at the cauldron, an undignified snort left her lips and she shook her head in disbelief. "To think a muggle like this is this incompetent....haah. Just give up, whatever it is you're doing. You'll never compare to real wizards, Hogwarts doesn't need stupid mudbloods like you soiling their halls." |

A Rough Start

Percival froze before his brain had time to catch up.
One moment, he was hovering over his cauldron, trying to decide if his attempts to fix the potion were working, then the next, the classroom door slammed so hard against its hinges that he nearly dropped his spoon into the potion. The sound had startled him, forcing him upright in his chair with his heart kicking against his ribs. Then he turned into his seat and looked at the intruder.
The girl standing in the doorway looked like she’d walked in with the specific goal of picking a fight with him. Her voice hit him harder than the sound of the door had, and even just the way she looked at him told him everything he needed to know. Then there were the insults she threw at him so casually.
You can’t fix stupid.
Brat.
Mudblood.
Heat crept up his neck immediately, burning all the way up to his ears and cheeks. He wasn’t even sure which part stung more: the insults or the tone she used to throw them at him. “I’m… I’m not a mudblood,” he finally responded, though his voice barely made it out past his throat. He then tightened his grip on the edge of the table, trying not to look as rattled as he felt.
Because for a moment, the memory of that awful afternoon in the bathroom flashed through his mind again: the swirlie from a boy much older than he was, the laughter, and the humiliation he felt afterwards. He hated how small he had felt then, how he’d just let it happen because he didn’t know what else to do.
He wasn't going to let it happen again.
“What do you want? If you came here only to insult me, just leave. I’m trying to finish something.” He swallowed less than a second after he said it, knowing his voice lacked confidence. But at least he wasn't just curling in on himself anymore.

A Rough Start
I wandered the halls of the dungeon. It was one of the steps on my bucket list of things to do at Hogwarts, Mum told me that the dungeons scared her as a kid and made it hard for her to concentrate in potions and not to feel bad if l got spooked. I LOVED it! The dark lighting, the weird dripping sounds, a loud bang followed by what sounded like a wounded up banshee! Wait what? Mary stopped in her tracks, she looked around wondering where she heard it from then turned a corner and saw the Potions classroom door wide open, she tip-toed closer her curls bouncing slightly as she peeked in and saw a boy and a girl, looked like they were from Slytherin.. Mary thought about turning back, whatever they were talking about was none of her business, but she froze when heard the boy say, ”“What do you want? If you came here only to insult me, just leave. I’m trying to finish something.” Mary felt her heart clench, she hated bullies, she had enough of them back home. Mary’s thoughts whirled, she should just leave. She didn’t even know the boy, or the girl for all she knew it could be a misunderstanding! But.. would it really be worth the risk? Mary turned on her heel and marched into the classroom before her resolve turned into regret and tapped the girl on the shoulder and smiled extra brightly as of what she was about to say was totally normal. “You look like a troll the rolled out of bed the wrong way and have the attitude of a poorly managed care of 5 yr old child.” Mary almost melted into a puddle right there and then, what was she doing?! This girl was taller, probably stronger, and she was clearly not nice. WHY WON’T MY FEET MOVE?! was the only thought ringing in Mary’s head as the girl turned around.
Some wounds feel so deep we don't think they'll heal, but when we open our eyes and truly look through the pain we see these three: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.
