𝓑rookline stared hard at the letter, the parchment crumbled and rips forming at the edges due to a quite angry girl when she first took a look at her father's polite handwriting. The girl was perched upon a large stone slab, waiting for a pure-bred stranger. Her leg twitched, causing the silky gown she wore to ripple and shine, as she pooled over the fine-scripted words for the hundredth time.

October fourth. Fall ball. The young Quinn was under no circumstances wasn't going to attend the dance, until that stupid, freakishly polite note she had received from him. With strict, yet, civil instructions to meet this fluffed up pure-blood boy who's family arranged this stupid meeting with Brookline's father.

How the hell could he write me, Brookline thought, as a dark lock fell in her face, write me such courtesy when you could clearly see the damn tension between us?

She sighed, the pins and clips in her fancy braid, poking her skull, causing her a painstakingly horrible headache, and she resisted the unmistakable, growing urge to yank them out and chuck them in the Great Lake. Brookline would have killed to see that scene, she would have given anything to observe the metal clips sinking underneath the dark, inky ripples, watching all her heart and warmth vaporize and squeeze out.

Blue irises volleyed back to the tearing slip of parchment, and a tear fell. She was not free. Chase Quinn had his hold on her, prison her, keeping those metal chains wrapped round her wrists, the rusting metal slitting her light, fair skin. Brookline balled her fists, the one golden ring on her finger, cut into her finger. That ring was Lizy's.
Dear Brookline,

I have arranged a conference (and for future reference, if this goes well, and you match, a future marrige might be spoken about the next time we meet), with the pure-blood family Devereux's heir, Mister Rafal Devereux. Devereux is a second year at Hogwarts, and you will meet and get to know him at the Autumn Ball.

You do not have a choice. Your mother has given her full support and if you do not comply, drastic measures will be forced.

Elizabeth will be sending you options of frocks and heels. Have a nice time, Brookline.

As ever,
Your Father
Lizy did indeed ship her a gown and heels. A white, shiny mermaid gown, and white heels. Perfect for the ball's pirate like aesthetie, yet, not the best outfit, although, she wouldn't wring even more disappointment on herself.

Brookline could have screamed, though. She wanted absolutely everything to simply stop. Her father ran away from her, why the heck would he ever arrange a marriage!

To let you remember you are a pure-blood, and you, my dear, must keep the Quinn lineage going, Chase's voice rattled unpleasantly in her ears, when her father had sat her down, and had a short conversation with Quite Young Brookline about their high pure-blood ancestry.

Young Brookline had paid just enough attention to be slightly disappointed afterwards when her workaholic father wasn't going to play with her nor her sisters. Once Chase left the room, the little dolly that had been once been clutched so hopefully, was chucked onto the floor, and Brookline had heard the plastic face of the toy smacked regrettfully on the wooden floor.

Brookline sighed as she looked out on the Great Lake's inky waters, the reflection of the yellow moon painted quite crudly upon the black water. She crane her neck back to gaze at the lovely moon, it's big, round shape familiar to her, and she saw stars floating around it, reminded her of everything revolving around her.

The inordinately outlandish situation Rafal Devereux currently finds himself in is one that is entirely unprecedented, at least on a personal level. As he makes his way alongside gaggles of fellow Hogwarts students, decked out in their most thespian garb and gear and buzzing with the high of being so close to what can only be described as one of the most anticipated events of the year, the Slytherin ponders escape routes. Looks like those long hours spent lounging by the fraught waters of the lake shall come into utilisation after all.

He could hide behind a tree, perhaps a big one with many leaves. It will undoubtedly be quite a task to spot such an oak at this time of season, but he is indefatigable. Or behind a boulder, of which there are many in the area. Even the sinister eldritch forces which make their home within the depths of the water suddenly appear awfully welcoming. The lesser of two evils.

As he grapples in his own mind, the brimming exultant throng abruptly halts and Rafal reflectively follows suit, just barely managing to pulling himself back and avoid walking face-first into the ungainly pirate captain ahead of him, who had evidently decided it was sensible to don lubbery chainmail and a hulking giant hat to a literal dance party. Did pirates even wear chainmail?

The second year casts a hurried glance to the many dandified fellows beside him, follows their lines of sight to the front of the mass. Slowly, his eyes inch upwards little by little, taking in the grandiose of the scene before him. Well. Rafal gets it.

Every new school ball, it is crooned and gushed how wow, the planning committee has done it again! They really outdid themselves this time, just like every single time before! Considering how the team is composed of a different gang each time, Rafal would not ever wish to be involved in one of these occasions. Everyone is blown away for a few months, then they move on to the next group. What even is the point of all that effort? Fine, perhaps he is in a rather cynical mood at the moment. His concedes that core point is not untrue, however.

Yet although Rafal does not in the least relish admitting this, the lot really have outdone themselves. The boy had been sceptical upon learning that a shipwreck was being advertised as the main event, but they did well as they could. Bathed in the incandescent glow of the moon hanging high above inky black skies, a tall ship sits. Undoubtedly having seen better days, still retaining the majesty which beguiled the renowned Captain Bartholomew Vane all those centuries ago. A wooden passerelle leads up to the main decks, and Rafal looks upon the splintered railing longingly. Oh, what he wouldn’t give to simply cast aside all formerly outlined engagements, leave them high and dry to make merry on his own.

Alas. Rafal is not the type capable of impetuousness, and blowing this night off will only lead to more trouble down the road. So he inwardly sighs, begins wading through the now mockingly jolly horde in search of his target.

In what is perhaps the most satirical twist of all time, the Slytherin’s engagement which has been weighing so heavy on his mind, is an engagement, and possibly he would be capable of appreciating the full irony of the situation and hilarity of word-play some other time. It is a winding story, full of long-lost relatives he never knew he had and opulence the likes of which he had never even set eyes on. Rafal can still remember how agog he had been back when summer vacation first let out, expectant of the most lacklustre few months.

How deeply, awfully wrong he was. He hadn’t, and still has not, the faintest clue how it came to be, but Natasha Devereux had received an abrupt letter and then off they were, leaving all the twelve-year-old knew behind and departing for the rolling hills and temperate climates of south-west England. It is all a blur, and Rafal does not like to dwell too much on that particular period.

His grandparents, previously assumed long dead, turned out to be very much alive and excessively well-off. Nobody ever said it out loud, but there are some things that can be inferred, if the downright ostentatious mansion and comprehensive general flamboyance ingrained deep into every aspect of the place are any intimation. At any rate, he and his mother had moved in, and Rafal still does not think he has managed to fully assimilate this continuous train of events. He has so many questions, yet they have all been avoided thus far, not so unobtrusively at times.

And the envelope that had come, save a fortnight into the school year? Its contents brief yet weightly, parchment turned to lead in between unsteady finger-tips. His eyes had scanned over the cursive in a whirl, and then again and again. Who can blame Rafal? It is downright fictitious, this supposed betrothal as a union not between individuals, but last names. The Slytherin has since then felt as if he were a character in some story-book, Romeo and Juliet in ancient Verona. There is no underlying tone of romance and intrigue in Rafal’s tale, but the setting does feel similarly illusory.

Well, there is no use dwelling upon his misfortune - except wait, he already is. Rafal has been searching for quite some time, navigating his way through the swarms of partygoers, many appearing less than pleased to be cut off, however momentarily. He resists the urge to roll his eyes. A second halted will not kill them.

And frankly, he is becoming rapidly more irked as the clock ticks. He tries to recall back to the description of the girl he is to meet, not that the sender had exactly bothered with giving Rafal much to work with. A bare-bones portrayal, barely enough for a cardinal illustration in his mind’s eye. With his recent streak of luck, the Slytherin will spend his night wandering around the perimeters, entirely futile.

Even the fates must have decided he looked too pathetic to ignore, drifting about aimlessly like some sort of gloomy spirit. When Rafal’s eyes land on her, it is unmistakable. Mostly as she is the only one he had come across this evening who was not all giggly and blithe, instead perched upon a great stone slab in a most dramatic fashion, neck craned up to the moonlit night. He supposes he cannot blame her. If the Slytherin could pull the whole sad melancholic tragic vibe off, bet he would have been up there at the first opportunity. He’d just have to grow his hair longer first. And maybe invest in a glittery outfit.

He realises he is standing there like a lemon and snaps himself out of the haze. All right. No sense in putting it off. Reflexively patting down his clothes and reaching up to smooth over blonde locks, Rafal takes a halting step forward, then another and another and off he goes. The girl is sitting with her back to him, and the fact that she is currently faceless does nothing to steel the second year’s nerves, heart pounding with rapidly increasing pressure. He stops once he is standing right behind the slab she had opted for, and from this distance, the girl’s shimmering fairy-esque dress catches the light from the nearby structure, as well as the glow of the moon. Caramel tresses braided over one shoulder, woven with somethings distinctively ornate.

Rafal clears his throat. Does not bother to force much faux exuberance into his voice. "Hello." He offers up a polite smile. "If you don’t mind me asking, would I be correct in assuming your name is… Brookline Quinn?"

𝓑rookline played with her grubby fingernails as she observed as the stars spun around the moon, the reflection providing little confort. The Welsh Ravenclaw's white heel tapped the ground, and she wanted to stop her foot doing whatever is really was doing. The obnoxious rapping made her fingers stupidly tense and stiffen even though she couldn't even hear the tapping on the soft earth. Then she exhaled, reminding herself that breathing helps.

Inhale, exhale. There you go.

The parchment between her lean fingers, grew released as the tightening had been released. Honestly, Brookline wouldn't mind if someone just came up to her, snatched the pointless letter right out her hands and literally just pitch it. She would not even give two hoots. In fact, she might even toss it herself. The inky darkess only spread, through her heart to her lungs. Soon, it might even choke her. And, Brookline wouldn't mind. Anything to get off this cruel world and away from her even crueler father.

The Ravenclaw quite wished she could just walk away. If she only could. The quite horrible disappointment would only increase, and increase and she would never ever have her dad back. Perhaps Brookline could run away, and lie and fib to her father, saying that she met this pure-blood. Then, what would the Devereux family say if she never even met their son? She didn't wanna think about it. Never. Actually, she knew what her father would say.

You've put a stain on the Quinn bloodline!

Anything she did. Everything she did. Was probably documented, just to make sure every pure-blood family was doing what they should be doing. Did she care, though? No. Yet her father cared about this, and this only. The literal one thing he only cared about her, and that arranged marriage was the only thing he cared about his second eldest daughter. Was Lizy's marriage arranged too? Is that why she hadn't moved out? At her age, Lizy would be graduating this year or the next year.

Yet, sweet, credulous, gullible Brookline was going to make that count, really count so perhaps her dad could care even more about her! That would make her so happy if he cared even five percent more.

If he cared one percent more would be her excited. Even more excited if Chase Quinn would give a darn. She wished she cared. She knew she cared way too much, yet, not enough.

Suddenly, she heard purposed footsteps, and a throat being cleared. Brookline roatated around swiftly to find a tall boy, who seemed to be a year or two younger than her, and she stood up to face the stranger. He had about a inch or two on her, and she wondered if he was the same age as her. The young wizard had curly blonde hair, and he had greenish and blueish eyes that she could not name a single colour for. And she wished she could.

He greeted her with a plain hello, and Brookline just looked at him with a small frown as he guessed her name correctly. At first, the Welsh girl narrowed her eyebrows, wondering how on God's green and blue earth could this boy she'd never met know her full name. Then, it completely dawned on her. This boy was probably the pure-blood her father wanted her to marry! At first, her lips drew up, thinking she could now leave, yet, she remembered what her father said, ...get to know him at the Autumn Ball. Just..., what would happen if she didn't want to know him, though?

Of course, I just have to stay here. I just wanna go back to my stupid dorm, Brookline thought, her sigh audible as the frown on her face only increased as she surveyed the stranger. She wished she could get out of this. Anywhere, anyhow. She just didn't care. She just wanted to spend the night in her dorm, and then rubbing it in everyone's faces when everybody felt like they were hungover and she wasn't.

Brookline glanced and then glared mercilessly and suspiciously at the younger boy, hoping he could go away soon, and tell his relatives that he met her, and they now knew each other. Even if they didn't even know each other's favourite subject or favourite colour. But of course, that probably won't happen, due to all the unfortunate circumstances she'd been through. Anyway, she knew just a meeting wouldn't cut it for her father. Her father would want her to get know Devereux. And just of course he did. Of course, of course. It was always just freaking of course!

With all the dryness she could muster, Brookline began, "That's right. My name is Brookline. And I would assume you are Rafal?" She pursed her lips, and nodded, her clear face now deadpan, the only thing expressive was her dark blue eyes flaming outrageously in the diming light. "I got the same letter. Of course our familes arranged this. 'You must keep the pure-blood line pure, Brookline' and all that shit is all aimless, fruitless, and, honestly, so damn stupid."

Brookline didn't care how absolutely ill-manned and unpolite she was being. She could be as rude as she wanted, at least that was what she thought. She didn't care about her use of curse words and how this younger boy would take it. The boy could blame her father for all she cared for! Actually, this boy couldn't. Blame pure-bloods and their meaningless ideas, and in Brookline's choice of words, fruitless. It was Chase Quinn's father's father's father's and so on, faults. Whoever made the idea that everything that be so hopelessly pure. There weren't many pure-blood familes left.

Soon, there's gonna be inbreeding, Brookline thought to herself, and she could swear she could hear the faint music of the Fall Ball. Though, did she even care? No.
