the air by the great lake was colder than aeron expected. it always was near the water. aeron stood near the edge, hands in his pockets, his reflection looking back at him through the dark water.
he hadn’t planned on coming here. it just sort of happened. classes were done and the castle was full of noise. the lake was the only place he’d found that gave him that
few other students were scattered around, sitting in groups or skipping stones. he was alone, walking until he found a spot farther away from everyone else. he sat down on the grass, careful not to ruin his robes.
from where he sat he could see the reflection of Hogwarts on the water
he picked up a small stone and tossed it in
he leaned back on his hands, half-lidded eyes watching the sky shift colors as the sun dropped lower
it had been a strange week. sorting, letters from home, classes, annoyed a professor or two and earned himself a bit of attention for his last name but not the kind he liked. every time someone said Blackthorn it came with a certain look
here by the lake none of that mattered.
he glanced toward the center of the water, where the squid sometimes appeared. he’d heard older students talk about it. the idea of a giant squid living in a school lake didn’t surprise him at all.
he stretched his legs out and lay back looking up at the sky. the grass was cold beneath him.
he closed his eyes for a bit, listening to rustle of leaves, the quiet ripple of water, the sound of the castle far off. it was the first time since he’d arrived that his head felt clear.
he thought about his father again — about that letter. don’t embarrass the family. he smirked.
he stayed there until the sky turned darker. he pushed himself up, brushing off his robes. for a moment he looked back at the lake the reflection of Hogwarts.
“see you around, i guess,” he muttered quietly to the water, though he wasn’t really sure who he was talking to. maybe the squid. maybe himself.
then he turned and started back toward the castle.

Mary needed air.
The castle for the last few months had felt stuffy and she was starting to miss her old life before magic came in. Her dog Tulip, her mum's chocolate Pick-Me-Ups and most of all she missed her father. She knew what he would say if he was here, "Don't start getting bored now Marigold the fun is just getting started!". Mary had changed out of her robes, felt like they were starting to feel tight, and was wearing her favorite dark blue and yellow striped long sleeved shirt and jeans.
Mary sighed and put her hair in a tight bun, which was a little hard considering how stubborn her hair was most of the time. She walked briskly, not really sure where as the cool air whipped at her face. She had her head down and was kicking a small stone letting her mind drift in and out, thinking about her parents, her dog, how being at Hogwarts was just one big roller coaster she wasn't sure she wanted to be on anymore.
Was this it?
Was she really going to endure this.. this-
She didn't get to finish her thought because she bumped into someone, and the stone she was kicking fell into the water.
She looked up at him and surprise flickered on her face before forming into a scowl.
"YOU!"
She growled and pointed a finger at his face. It was the same stuck up, arrogant boy from the Library a few weeks back! What was his name? Aeeron? Ron? Bob? Mary was terrible with names but she never forgot a face. Especially if that face ticked her off. Mary lowered her finger, because one pointing was rude and two she wanted to dust off the imaginary lint from her clothes, hoping to dust off whatever bad omens were on him. She should have apologized, however she didn't and wouldn't. Maybe if pigs started to fly. Mary smiled at the thought and held her head high, she had nothing to be sorry for.
HE did.
"Nice seeing you again. Oh wait, no it isn't."
Mary smile widened and she turned on her heel and walked away. Her conscience mostly clear. Almost clear. ALRIGHT FINE! Guilt was already worming its way in and Mary wanted to barf. But she still wasn't going to say sorry.

Some wounds feel so deep we don't think they'll heal, but when we open our eyes and truly look through the pain we see these three: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.
