As the first rays of the morning began to slip their way through the blinds, Geneva Bishop lay on her bed, eyes closed, wishing it hadn’t been a dream. It really had been a wonderful one, too. An oddly dressed character had come to call, said they were a representative of a place called Hogwarts School, and told Geneva that she was a witch. She was magic, she was special, and she was finally going to be somewhere she belonged. It’d been too good to be true.
The sunlight was pouring in now. Geneva groaned, and turned her back to the window. There was something on her nightstand, what was it? She reached out a sleepy hand to grab it, and as she looked at it a jolt of energy shot through her.
She knew it hadn’t been a dream! It was real, she was going to Hogwarts, and this weekend she was going to a place called Diagon Alley to get her school supplies. That was what had been on her nightstand: the list of supplies given to her by the representative the day before. That sparkling seal at the top of the letter was proof, a promise. She was a witch.

Geneva skipped happily into the kitchen. She never had this much energy at 6am, but today was different. The knowledge of what she really was seemed like a balloon inside her, carrying her along, filling her up.
She made it to the kitchen and stopped. Her older sister Maren sat at the table, eyes red-rimmed. She turned away after seeing Geneva, but the little girl ran up to the older one and embraced her. “I’m sorry they didn’t come for you, too,” she whispered into Maren’s hair.
She felt her sister gasp, and Maren pulled out of the hug and held her at arms length. “Sweetheart, I’m so happy for you. Don’t you ever think I’m not. I just… I’ll miss you!” She grinned through the tears playing at her eyes. “And what if they turn you into a toad? What will you do then, silly?” Maren ruffled her sister’s hair and promptly stood. “All right. Let’s have some breakfast.”

The true sign of intelligence is not knowledge but imagination.
