Saturday 23rd of August 2025.
This day is a real emotional rollercoaster for me. There's the excitement, of course, because we only get to go shopping for school supplies for the first time. There's also the weariness of my older siblings not wanting to share this special day with me. Finally, there's the anxiety of the novelty of it all. So many emotions for such a small girl.
Our first stop was the iconic Ollivander's shop, which was a huge step for me. But this stressful moment passed, I feel more prepared to complete my supply list. The next stop is at the library, to get all the books I need to study my first year at Hogwarts. There are so many things we need to get that I think we will buy the whole shop. But when I enter, I realize it must be only a small part of what they offer. The place seems huge, and it is so hectic! But my excitement takes over and, although my parents tell me to stay calm and close to them, I start running in the alleys, looking everywhere around me.
"Wow, it's so big here!" I say to myself, at loud.
I keep running everywhere without looking where I'm going, which makes my mom moan. I run, and run, until I bump into someone. Shoot, I'm gonna get in trouble.

If she was completely honest, Milica was extremely sleepy. She was definitely not a morning person or even a daytime person. No, her days tended to start after noon and end after midnight. Unfortunately for her, that's not how the rest of the world works. Shops open early in the morning and close in the evening. Hence why she was here now. Luckily, it was not yet late enough for the sun to start bothering her. London during summer was excruciating. If it was up to her, they would move to a colder country. Siberia or something.
Well, that's actually not up to her, and she had to get the shopping for her first school year done one of these days anyways. Deciding to just get it over with, she chose today, the 23rd of august. Her father had gotten time off from work to take her while her mother waited for them at home. Even though it was early -- at least for her -- Milica made sure to look proper. She wore a black t-shirt with a brown checkered dress over it. Her hair was down, as always, and she was wearing her beloved black Mary Janes underneath. She didn't forget to bring the list of stuff they needed either thanks to her preparation and honestly, it was extensive. Why they needed so much, Milica had no idea, but she hoped it would all be useful for something. What surprised her most was seeing cloaks on the list. Did wizards really wear those?
The pair's first stop was Flourish and Blotts. Immediately after walking in, the young girl got very overstimulated. She couldn't believe her eyes. There were children running around everywhere. And that in a book shop! Even her quick reflexes couldn't save her when eventually the inevitable happened. A girl with fair skin and raven black hair just like her own bumped into her.
Surprised that she wasn't able to evade the missile-like girl, Milica looked into her eyes and snapped, suddenly awake as ever. "What do you think you're doing? Can't you tell this is a book shop? Look where you're going!" If her angry voice didn't betray her emotions, her expression surely would.
After a quick scan around the room, Milica noticed that her father wasn't standing next to her anymore, instead looking at some books further into the shop. She was glad: her peace-loving father would never approve of the way Milica talked to this girl. Deciding the coast is clear, Milica whispered one last comment underneath her breath. "This girl must be daft."

I bumped into a small girl, like me. Maybe she will be a first year too? But her attitude makes me think she is confident, so maybe she will be a second or third year. She looks too young to be the same age as Eunice.
"Sorry..." I mutter, embarrassed for a second. But it passes very quickly. Nothing can bring my spirits down.
"Is it your first time going to Hogwarts, like me? Are you excited?" I ask with the biggest smile. Maybe she will be a friend someday.
I look at her closely. We look kind of similar with our straight dark hair and pale skin. We look like we could be sisters. I wish I had another sister, a nicer one. But this one doesn't seem so nice, even compared to Eunice. I still think there might be someone else under the surface. Sometimes we just need to persevere and be patient, and the real personality of people comes out.
"Did you get your wand yet? I got mine right before coming here. It was so impressive!" I say. I don't really know why I feel confident enough to continue talking to this girl. I think I'm just happy to meet someone who's about my age. There was this little boy in Ollivander's shop, but we didn't get to talk.

Surprisingly, the girl that bumped into her wasn't very impressed by her angry comments. At least she didn't seem to be judging from how excited she still acted. Sure, she may have muttered an embarrassed sorry, but she quickly seemed to recover from her embarrassment. She noticed that the embarrassed look was quickly replaced by a huge smile on the girl's face. Milica had to force herself to take one deep breath in preparation for what was inevitably coming for her. She knew what that smile meant: it usually accompanied the face of enthusiastic children. If there was two things she hated, the first would be people - obviously - but the second one would be happy people. Ironic, because she's a person herself.
"Yes, this is my first time going to Hogwarts. No, I'm not excited. I wish I could be everywhere but a place where I'm surrounded by stupid, annoying children with the absurd power to wield magic." It wasn't very like her to go on a rant like that, especially to a stranger who had just literally ran into her, but she supposed she needed it. After all, she really had been worried about attending a pretentious boarding school, having to leave behind the only two people she got along with, those being her parents. Besides, perhaps it would finally scare the girl off, a feat she would be very proud of if that worked out.
"You did, huh.." Milica replied when the other girl started talking about her wand. She didn't get hers yet. Getting a wand would only make her nightmare even more real: she really was a wizard, and really would be attending a school called Hogwarts. Honestly, could they have come up with a less distasteful name? She didn't believe so. "I didn't get my wand yet. My father told me the wand would choose me.. I hope my wand hates people as much as I do", she thought out loud. "What wand did you get? I bet it's one made for annoying people", she then said, hoping to finally get rid of the bothersome girl who was trying to talk to her. Honestly, it's insane how beings could be so infuriating. Did people not have manners anymore?

As I wiggle around with happiness, the girl replies that she's a first year too. How lucky that we met in this big bookstore! She says she wish she weren't here though, which is very sad in my opinion. Such a day is so exciting for me. I am prepared to reply and, of course, ask more questions. But I am getting ahead of myself, and I listen to the girl until the end. She sure seems to dislike people, although that doesn't bother me.
"My wand is for brave people! That's what the man said." I say in an exaggeratedly annoying voice. "Nah!"
I feel a bit proud as I say this. Will I be a Gryffindor? That would be unexpected, but kind of cool too. Since I am playful, I want to play the same game as the girl.
"I bet yours will be for grumpy people." I giggle, my hand covering my mouth. I do not actually mean it, or maybe a little. But really more as teasing. In stories, there's often a duo: a bright one and a dark one. I feel like we could be that. Or, she could hate me forever. It's okay, there's no way we will get sorted in the same house! We are too different for that to happen.
