Growing up, Joni was detached and cold. No one knew about her life before her mothers had adopted her when she was four. She always seemed to sort of analyze whoever she saw, even when she was young. And the odd part was she acted completely normal with her mothers and brother. A normal toddler you'd see on the street.
There was the strange fox mask she always chose to wear; one of her mothers had made it for her when she was adopted, and she'd taken it off as little as possible since. An orange mask with a white nose and ears. She had never taken it off.
Whenever her mothers spoke of Hogwarts, Joni felt a dreadful, sinking feeling in her gut. She would quietly hope every night that she wasn't magical so she wouldn't have to be apart from her family.
And then, she made Emmett's toys come to life.
They were playing in the living room while a cartoon played. Joni was holding a toy train and Emmett had a toy airplane. While they were playing and her brother was absorbed in his laughter, Joni noticed that the toy train had started to... pull away from her hand? It wasn't by any means an automatic toy train; at least, she didn't think it was. But, despite herself, she let it go and watched as it started moving across the tracks. Emmett finally looked over and gasped, laughing excitedly and chattering about how his big sister was a witch. Joni jumped on him and told him to be quiet. Then she told him he'd earn a bag of Sugar Quills if he kept quiet about it. Once he agreed and was given the Sugar Quills, they went into the kitchen for dinner. With the candy held behind his back, that little snake smiled proudly at their mothers and started talking about how "Joni made my toys move on their own! Joni's gonna be a witch!"
Joni felt like she was being sentenced to prison.
Regardless, her mothers packed her trunk and sent her onto the train with a final argument about whether she would enjoy her time there.
Joni was adamant she would not.
