Skylar could feel the excitement buzzing in the classroom while all the students found some place to sit. The table was arranged for four people. She just randomly picked one available and forced herself into the group.

New faces looked at each other, but remained silent, heavy, and calm. She could feel the air that was awkward enough to avoid her eyes looking at something else. This was her first potion class. She hoped to sit here just for the lecture part, but when her turn to work, she wished she could do it alone.

The chitchat voice slowly faded away after the professor began his greeting. Even though he was the foreign teacher, she had no strange feelings or intimidation toward him at all. After a while, her social anxiety began to fade. The professor seemed very clear about what he was teaching. His explanations were direct and emphasized the important things enough for her to remember quickly. She had been around with potions before, so it wasn’t hard for her to realize what required caution and what she was expected to do regularly.

Skylar took notes briefly and summarized every sentence the professor said in her own words. Making potions isn’t so different from taking care of the plants. She thought as she scribing lecture. It takes patience, dedication, and discipline, and those were qualities she already had. What she still needed to improve was her neatness and maybe her organization.

Glancing up at the board again, she double-checked the ingredients of Cure for Boils.

“Six snake fangs… four horned slugs… two porcupine quills.”

She mouthed the numbers to herself before she was ready for the brewing part. Everyone stood up and quietly separated to their cauldron. Her workstation was next to a boy from Hufflepuff that she didn’t know. Then, she tried to greet him with a weirdly smiled, but felt embarrassed and gazed away.

Lysander was rather excited for his first Potions lesson. His mother had said it was always her favourite subject when she was here, so he wanted to see what his mother loved about it so. He quickly found his answer when he stepped through the door and saw all the vials of ingredients. He was already interested in what they'd be doing, and how long it would take before he can start brewing. He took a seat at one of the brewing stations, not really acknowledging who else was on the table.

The room was mostly quiet, aside from a few hushed conversations between those already acquainted, until the teacher came, which quickly hushed what little noise there was. He greeted the class and began his lecture on the Cure for Boils. Despite how his face probably looked, Lysander was listening to every word he said. The professor was very clear on his instructions, and Lysander couldn't help but build up a silent enjoyment for when they started brewing.

Lysander scribbled a few notes on his parchment as he listened to the professor (they weren't the clearest or easiest to read, but they made sense to him). Eventually, the professor set the students off on their brewing and Lysander got to work. Lysander triple checked her had the right ingredients written down, "Six snake- yep... four slugs with horns, check... two quills. Perfect."

As they moved onto the brewing section, he noticed a Slytherin girl on the station next to him give a weird smile before quickly looking away. "That was a bit of a poor attempt at a greeting, but I suppose first impressions aren't easy. Let me make things easier: Hi, I'm Lysander Rootmourn. Pleasure to meet you.".

Skylar startled a bit. The boy actually acknowledged her and greeted her back. What a name! She thought. She hesited wheater to repeat it or just say nothing. The girl was nervous even more inside, yet still manage to keep her cool face. All her mind focused on her hand offering. Hoping he didn’t disgust or have a bad attitude toward Slytherin.

“H…Hi, I am Skylar. Skylar Astor.”

Then, she began to wonder if he heard her family name before. She couldn’t handle if his reaction was the same as that of someone who knew her sisters.

“Nice to meet you,” She forced her smile and gazed back at her cauldron. The professor’s voice distracted her again as he showed the vital glass. It has to be blue if she wants a perfect Cure for Boils. She scribbled her note one more time.

Skylar’s face changed into work mode immedaitely, serious, concentrating.

“First…” She looked at her note and grabbed the snake fangs. She put them in her mortar and crushed them with her small hands.

“More grit, more fine,” she murmured softly.

Once she was satisfied, she measured out four spoonfuls of the crushed fangs and added them to her cauldron. She heated it exactly as the instructions said, then she moved her ash wood wand with an exact wave before letting the potion brew.

As she waited, she glanced to see if everything was going well with the boy next to her, too. It wasn’t hard for the first part. Everyone just has to be precise.

Lysander nodded at the girl's name, planning on committing it to memory (whether it stayed there or not was not yet known), but he gave a small smile in acknowledgement before looking back at his station. He was curious on whether she was a muggle-born, half-blood, or pureblood. He was hoping that her name may give that away, so he could strike up a conversation about something related to either wizardry or muggle things. Unfortunately, her last name sounded like it could be from any background, so he was internally confused, even if his face didn't show it.

He looked at the teacher, seeing the required blue that was needed before scribbling it down as well. He then turned his attention to his cauldron and ingredients as he got to work. He took 6 snake fangs, crushing them down to a powder (which took him a while since he couldn't tell if it was fine enough), before measuring four spoonfulls of the powder. He added it to the cauldron and began to heat it at the requirements. After ten seconds, he waved his wand over the cauldron as instructed before then leaving it.

He then turned back to the Slytherin girl, "So, you think you'll enjoy potions?".

Skylar nodded, “Yes, of course. Do you like potion too?” Her eyes lit up with expectation, hoping his answer would be the same as she thought. Even though her passion for potion wasn’t like Herbology, which she was so proud of, but her eagerness to learn this class was beyond other subjects.

She had her own experiment, testing poison potions at home, but she hadn’t tried testing the potion from the school lesson yet. She had to learn it before she found a way to test it herself. That was the reason she was so excited to learn this class.

When the time came, she grabbed and dropped the sticky four-horned slugs. So far, so good until some of them slipped from her hand. “Seriously?” She muttered while managing to catch one just before it hit the floor with a sigh. Then, she pulled the cauldron off the fire and followed by putting two porcupine quills. She added the quills carefully and stirred five times clockwise before giving her wand a final flick.

A luminous swirl of blue rose from the cauldron’s surface. Skylar smiled to herself. She didn’t know if the professor had noticed, but that didn’t matter. For now, she was simply proud that she’d done it right.

It took a long time before she realized there was a bit of struggling around her. She was surprised and said gently. “Are you alright? Do you need any help?”
