Day at the Great Lake
Sienna found a perfectly flat and dry stone by the lake so she could sit down. Since there was a slight breeze, she put on a wool shawl that she wrapped around herself. The lake was enormous yet very still, reflecting the sky with its beauty. The only signs of life on the lake were the little waves caused by the breeze. She relished the combination of the ink and paper she was reading and the fresh and earthy atmosphere of the lake.
From here she could see the pine trees next to the lake through which the wind was moving. Off in the distance, she could hear the buzzing of the cicadas. Sienna kept glancing at the view instead of reading: sun on the lake, a silent heron flying over the water and the gentle splash of the water against the rocks. Slowly, a family of ducks swam past her; the sunlight spotlit the ripples caused by their swimming as they glided across the water.
She was completely engrossed in her reading before she knew it. However, most of the time, the great silence around her was what she actually considered as a treat to herself as time seemed stopped. The only way she realized time was passing was the sun was moving towards the horizon and the shadows of the trees were becoming longer. She moved her blanket and felt the warmth of the rock under her and the feel of the grass on her feet. All these made her feel very nice and peaceful in the world.
When the sun was going down, it transformed the sky into a canvas smeared in various colours like pink, purple, and gold. Sienna closed her book and took a deep breath. She liked the combination of the strong water smell, the fresh aroma of pine trees, and earthiness of the path. All she had to do was breathe deeply and be there in the serene setting of the beautiful lake and she instantly felt really good, happy and at peace with herself; a typical late summer day turning out to be really great for Sienna. Sienna thought that just being at the water and reading was one of those times when simplicity shows how great it is. It was like a tiny, quiet miracle. She couldn’t help thinking that sometimes the most simple things like sitting by the lake with a book in hand can be the most wonderful ones. The lake was calm, the air was fresh, and it was so quiet. It made her feel really relaxed and happy. She hoped she could come back soon and experience it all over again.
