Sienna on The Hogwarts Express
Sienna found herself enveloped in steam as she took her first step on the extravagant scarlet train, which was shining fantastically under the sun, right on Platform 9¾. The sounds that reached her ears at once were so mixed up, owls hooting, trunks clattering, parents giving their children last-minute advice, and so on, but they all formed a single magical sound at the end. She was really excited and at the same time terrified as she gripped her ticket tightly, the golden letters spelling Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry were sparkling.
Sienna found a vacant compartment in the middle of the train and slid the door shut behind her. She sat silent for a moment inhaling the mixed smells of the polished wooden compartment, the soot, and the treacle tarts. Then the whistle blew, it was long and low, and the train moved off. Sienna saw the platform getting smaller, her parents were waving until they disappeared in the fog as tiny silhouettes.
The landscape outside consisted of green meadows like waves coming over and the sun was shining brightly on the whole scene. The sound of each wheel of the train going over the tracks thudded rhythmically into her ears and gave her a strange feeling of panic and thrill at the same time. She was going to an extraordinary place and leaving all the known and familiar behind.
The door of the compartment opened with a sound of squeaking. A girl with a mass of curls came in and asked, “Would you mind if I sit here?” while trying to stabilize the pile of spellbooks she was carrying.
Sienna beamed at her. “You are welcome to.”
They exchanged their names—Clara Wren, a first-year like Sienna—and soon they were engaged in a lively debate about wand types, house divisions, and if portraits in Hogwarts really conversed. A friendly witch with a trolley suddenly showed up and they shared a Pumpkin Pasty and a packet of Bertie Bott’s Every Flavour Beans, their laughter bursting out every time they got a taste of the unpleasant flavor.
Night came gradually, and the mountains appeared like giants outside the windows while the lights of some distant towns flickered. Sienna put her hand flat on the window. She was convinced that the castle which was going to be her home and which was going to majorly influence her life was somewhere on the other side of that horizon.
“This is it,” she murmured. “We are actually going to Hogwarts.”
