As a first year you don't have access to the purse which is where you hold your money, what a lot of people do to get around this is to buy potato peelings or house badges as they sell for the same value as bought and send those instead!
Also if you'd like to you can sign up for the mentorship program, here you'll be paired with a tenured member of site who will show you around and you can ask any and all question to! (You are also more than welcome to ask your questions here!)

How do you send them though?

Hi Piper!
In order to send money as a first year, you'll have to buy Potato Peelings at the Apothecary Shop. To send them to another player, you go to your trunk through your character portrait. Once in your trunk you find your 'Ingredients', where you should find the Potato Peelings. To send them, you type in the right amount and press the 'Give' button. A screen will pop up with the Address book. Type in the name of the person you want to send the Potato Peelings to, click on it, optionally type in a message and click on 'OK'. They should be sent now.
You can check if you've sent them by looking at your trunk again and looking if the Potato Peelings have indeed left your inventory.
