Setback With a Whistle..
Introduction- Whistle to Watch
First class of Transfiguration, would I finally be able to use my wand in this class? I wasn’t able to use my wand in my last two classes, it was just a lot of notes and reading. I was a bit nervous to use my wand. I haven’t really used it yet- or at all for that matter but I guess there’s no time like the present.
I reached down and slowly got my wand out, prepared to try my best as I watched the other 1st year students to the same with the same nervous excitement I had. This lesson was book-free so it was all about first-hand experience. After the professor explained(and demonstrated at the same time)to us that we’d all get a whistle and once we did we’d have to focus reallyhard on it, think of a watch and say the word: incantation. After the demonstration, we were off to practice. Every kid got their own whistle to use. Once I got my whistle, I placed it on the table aside me and started to figure this out.
“Incantation…” I mumbled quietly, nothing happened. Was I doing something wrong? This went one for a couple tries later. I glanced around the room and noticed everyone else was speaking loudly and clearly… something I wasn’t exactly doing- at least to that extent. I glanced back at the whistle and took a deep breath before clearly and loudly uttering the word..
“Incantation”
Nothing…
I stared at the whistle, defeated. I wasn’t ever going to get this right.. wait… what was happening?
The whistle was moved and before I knew it, the whistle was… alive..? Well, maybe not alive BUT it was bouncing around all over the place. The kids were freaking out and my teacher was a bit surprised as well. God, I how embarrassed I was.
I started to chance the whistle, trying to get it back but it was too fast and small. Finally, I just stopped and pointed my wand in its direction and spoke the words that have been failing me this whole class… I needed it to work…
“Incantation!” I announced as the whistle came to a sudden stop and transformed into a watch. I wasn’t sure what happened. How did it work? Wait- was I thinking about a… watch…? I stepped over to the watch on the floor and picked it up. I really did it. I looked at it some more.. I felt proud. The first lesson I did with a wand and I succeeded! Well, maybe with some minor setbacks BUT I still did it.
