Around 16:45 (4:45pm)
As per usual, Silas was bored. It was raining and he was currently wandering around aimlessly, exploring areas of the castle that he hadn’t been to yet, peering in random rooms with mild curiosity. Eventually, he came to a large set of doors with a metal placard that laid out some rules, but rules were boring, so he ignored it after a brief glance. Duelling sounded like it could be kind of interesting, though.
The doors were heavier than he expected, and he soon found himself in a huge room that was also bigger than he had expected. He looked around, orienting himself. Floating candles, cracked floors — couldn’t wizards mend things with magic??? why were they cracked?? — some kind of stage, portraits, suits of armour… it wasn’t really what he was used to, but, to be fair, very little at this cursed school was.
He sat down on the wooden bleachers for a moment, staring at the suits of armour, which he could now see possibly weren’t just suits of armour. Walking over to them, he could better observe the metal wands they held and their movement. “Huh.” He reached for his wand, which, until the present, had been largely disregarded. Simply on principle, he didn’t like most things relating to homework, and since he didn’t want to be at Hogwarts at all, he was even less inclined to try to integrate himself into the culture here, which included the use of magic. But, despite his general lack of effort, he did kind of know a few spells now…
Focusing on one of the targets, he made the wand movement as he said, “Flipendo.” Much to his surprise, it worked, light shooting out of his wand and hitting the target. That was actually sort of fun… “Incendio.” Silas liked fire. How cool was it that he could now create a flame wherever and whenever he wanted? Lighters were nice and functional enough, but you couldn’t easily fling that flame at a target like you could with the spell.
Maybe magic wasn’t so bad — it seemed like it would allow him to cause chaos on a scale that he could otherwise only have dreamed of. He just needed to figure out how to harness it.
