𝔗he train was gone now, leaving only the faint hiss of steam that hung in the evening air. Caspian dragged his trunk along the stone path, the wheels clattering and catching on cracks and loose stones. The town was quieter than he remembered. Hogwarts was never like this. There, noise lived in the walls—the thud of footsteps on staircases, owls hooting somewhere overhead, laughter echoing from the common rooms. Here, there was only his trunk scraping the ground, the wind, and the soft creak of lanterns being lit one by one.

It felt strange to be back. He had been away for months, in a world so different it sometimes felt like he had stepped out of one life and into another. Yet now, walking these streets again, memories rose up without asking. Running down this road when he was younger. Chasing friends. Pulling his little brother home after market day, the boy crying all the way.

His chest tightened. Would they even notice the difference in him now? He wasn’t the same boy who had left with wide eyes and nerves tangled in his stomach. He was taller, sharper than he was before—in the way he thought, in the way words came to him.

The trees broke apart, and the outline of his house stood against the fading light. Solid. Familiar. Smoke curled from the chimney, carrying with it the smell of burning wood that clung to the air. Caspian slowed without meaning to, his heart hammering harder the closer he got.
At the gate he saw them—his parents.

His mother, hand flying up to cover her mouth, smile stretched wide as if she couldn’t quite believe he was really standing there. His father, tall and steady, but with eyes that gave him away: proud, relieved, and softer than Caspian remembered.

He stopped for a moment, just looking at them. The weight in his chest eased, replaced by warmth that rushed through him so fast he almost laughed. He tugged his trunk forward again, gravel crunching, his steps quickening until he couldn’t hold back anymore.

“Caspian!” his mother called, breaking into a run. She reached him first, wrapping him up in her arms before he could get a word out. She smelled of lavender and woodsmoke, the kind of smell that never really leaves a home.

Caspian let out a shaky breath he hadn’t realized he was holding. For the first time in months, he felt like he was exactly where he belonged.
His father’s hand landed firm and steady on his shoulder, pulling him gently out of his mother’s arms.

“You’ve grown,” he said with a small, proud smile. Caspian swallowed the lump in his throat, only managing a nod.

Before he could answer, the door burst open and his little brother came flying out. Liam Junior was taller than Caspian remembered, but still all elbows and knees, his hair a wild mess from running.

“CASPIAN!” he shouted, barreling down the path.

Caspian hugged him. The force nearly knocked him off balance, and he laughed as he wrapped his arms around him. “Easy, Junior,” he said, ruffling his hair.

Two smaller figures appeared in the doorway behind him—Niamh and Siobhan. Niamh, at eight years old, tried to walk calmly, like he wasn’t racing to get there, but his smile ruined the act. Siobhan, only six, gave up on pretending altogether and sprinted straight for him, squealing his name.

Caspian opened his arms wide, and both of them threw themselves at him. He staggered under the pile of hugs, laughing harder than he had in months. His heart felt full in a way words couldn’t reach.

“Alright, give him a chance to breathe,” His mother said, finally stepping forward. Caspian rose quickly.

“Inside now,” His dad said, clapping Caspian on the back. His voice was warm. “The food’s going to get cold.”
