A Meeting of Kindred Souls

I stood under a rather large tree, debating whether or not I should climb it, or if I should just stay under it. I decided to climb.
I shrugged my bag over my shoulder and grabbed a brach to begin my ascent. I grunted before finally reaching my final destination. A shady branch that allowed me to see everything, but also to be partially hidden.
I grabbed my headphones out of my bag, a book and crossed my legs.
I slipped my headphones on in an easy motion and turned up my favorite music playlist that had everything from rock to soft and cheesy love songs.
I smiled, a rare thing for one such as me, a dark gothic teen girl, hater of all things smily and cute and sparkly. But it was worth it. It was because I finally had time to myself. I could barely get a second to breathe before I had to rush off to another class. And homework was a pain.
A true pain in the arse. But, I had to keep my grades up. It wouldn't to do have them lowered, not by a point. I refused to get anything other than an O, or an E if I was feeling uncaring on a particular subject.
I grabbed my book, A Study in Herbology by some famous rando whose name I didn't really care about and focused on studying.
But, before long, a rather unique sort of song came on.
"Arcade" by Duncan Laurence.
I froze for a moment. I wasn't used to this kind of song. The type that made you cry. Before long however, I realized that the song was kind of like the kind of bond me and my late mother had. Dark, cold, in pain.
"Loving you is a losing game."
That really felt like a gut punch. It hit me hard, leaving me slightly out of breath.
It left me almost hollow.
I replayed it and sang along.
"A broken heart is all that's left
I'm still fixing all the cracks
Lost a couple of pieces when
I carried it, carried it, carried it home"
A few tears escaped my eyes.
" I'm afraid of all I am
My mind feels like a foreign land
Silence ringing inside my head
Please, carry me, carry me, carry me home"
Truer words couldn't be spoken. They really couldn't. After all, what was left of me? Nothing but an empty thing. A shell, a reduction of my former self. Sure, I was still snarky, and grouchy, and I practically hated everyone these days, but it wasn't the same. People could feel it, see it. My teachers could as well. Sure, they didn't say anything, but I could see it in their gazes. I cut off most of my hair into a pixie cut. I bleached most of it to a light-ish sandy brown, and dyed the rest of it green. It wasn't permanent, I knew that it would only last maybe a year or 2 before it returned to it's rightful, raven wing color, but I didn't really care.
" I spent all of the love I've saved
We were always a losing game
Small-town boy in a big arcade
I got addicted to a losing game
Ooh, ooh
All I know, all I know
Loving you is a losing game
How many pennies in the slot?
Giving us up, didn't take a lot
I saw the end 'fore it begun
Still I carried, I carried, I carried on
Ooh, ooh
All I know, all I know
Loving you is a losing game
Ooh, ooh
All I know, all I know
Loving you is a losing game
I don't need your games, game over
Get me off this roller-coaster
Ooh, ooh
All I know, all I know
Loving you is a losing game
Ooh, ooh
All I know, all I know
Loving you is a losing game"
I finished quietly, just like the beggining.
What I didn't realized however, was that someone was sitting underneath me at the base of the tree. Listening.

It had been a crazy week, a crazy last few days actually, Leo was honestly excited to have some much needed alone time. After enjoying some lunch in the Great Hall, Leo went back to his dorm to retrieve his drawing pad, pencils and colored pencils and tossed them into his bag. With everything together he threw on a black sweatshirt over his white t-shirt and wore his black sweatpants and sneakers, perfectly comfortable and ready to just relax and draw for a while.
As Leo made his way out of the dorm he let his mind wander, with everything going on he wished he had his grandmother here to talk to since she always gave the best advice and encouragement. He had been stressing out so much about keeping his grades up and studying all the time so he would be able to keep up the perfect grades that his parents expect. Anything less than perfect would most likely bring a long letter from his father asking a long list of questions on why he didn’t do better, something he had to deal with once already after a less than ideal grade came home and never wanted to have to deal with again.
He gave some friendly nods to a couple of ghosts as he walked by until he made it to his destination. While people were casually going by or sitting around, Leo looked around for the best spot to sit. He spotted a tall tree that seemed to be offering a good amount of shade and also no one seemed to be nearby so he would have some quiet. With a small smile he quickly went over to the tree and sat down under it, leaning his back up against the trunk before taking out his drawing pad and a pencil.
Now his only problem was deciding what to draw so he decided to just people watch and doodle until inspiration struck him. Students passed by here and there and Leo let his eyes wander around the area. As he was making a doodle of one of the students cats that was across the courtyard, Leo heard a voice. With a quick glance around he didn’t see anyone close enough to him but he could’ve sworn it sounded close. He put the notepad down on his lap, scrunching his eyebrows as he looked around confused, hearing the voice continue to sing. Just as he was about to chalk it up to maybe a ghost playing around, Leo looked up and finally found the source of the unknown singer.
Sitting up on the branch was a girl. She was dressed in mostly black like himself, short dyed hair and lots of piercings. He shifted his weight a little, adjusting himself so he could see her better and noticed behind the book she was holding she was wearing a large set of headphones. No wonder she didn’t notice me, he thought to himself. It wasn’t until she stopped singing and noticed him that he realized he had been staring so long at her and quickly stood up to apologize. “I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to interrupt you. I only just realized you were there just now.”
