The pile of books was heavy in Isadora's arms as they left Flourish and Blotts and re-entered the hurrying light of Diagon Alley. "Right," said Thomas, producing the list from his pocket. "Robes next. Madam Malkin's." They walked across the road and into the shop, where a short, grinning witch in mauve robes welcomed them. "Hogwarts, dear?" she asked Isadora, who nodded. "Right you are. We'll sort you out." Isadora sat on a stool beside a boy who was as bored-looking as possible as a tape measure started flying around her, measuring her on its own. Her parents stood by in their place beside the bolts of cloth. Evelyn scanned the list. "Three sets of black work robes, standard model. Appointed hat. Pair of protective gloves." She glanced over at a shelf of more heavily constructed-looking gloves. "Madam Malkin, do you carry those in dragon hide? They'd provide much more protection than the standard issue." Thomas shook his head resolutely. "The supply list says 'protective gloves,' Evie, not 'dragon hide gloves.' We're strictly adhering to the supply list to the letter. No need for theatrics." Evelyn pouted but yielded. "Okay. But we're taking the winter cloak. 'One winter cloak, black with silver fastenings.'" She indicated a good-looking, thick woolen cloak on a model. "That one's practical. And it has the silver fastenings, yes?" Thomas nodded. After the measuring was completed and the order placed for three robes, a hat, the regular gloves, and the winter cloak, they moved out into the street. Thomas folded up the list and returned it to his pocket. "Okay," he said. "Cauldrons next, then to the apothecary for your potion materials. Let's go get this list done." Away they went, pushing through the crowd to Potage's Cauldron Shop to complete the remaining school supply list
