The Letter in the Dark Solo

Today was a day like any other. At 13:00, Milica awoke and got ready. As it was the middle of summer, her choice of clothing today was simple and comfortable: a dark checkered dress with a white short-sleeved blouse underneath. After slipping on some white socks and her black Mary Janes, she felt ready to head downstairs.

Her mother was waiting for her downstairs. She was quite a tall lady, with a ghastly white skin and long black hair, just like Milica. Unlike Milica however, she was the type of lady to turn heads when she walked past. Milica had always been quite envious of her, as when she walked past, people usually looked at her in disgust.

After having a boring breakfast - she's still forced to eat human food to blend in - her lessons started. Today, they would be focussing on mathematics. As it was hard for Milica to blend in with muggles, she didn't attend muggle school, and instead got homeschooled by her mother. She was an old vampire, so she had knowledge enough.

It was around 18:00 when her dad got home from work. He was a linguistics professor at university, and definitely another head turner. He had slightly curly brown hair and a pair of blue eyes. The ritual never changed: when he got home, he first gave her mother a kiss on the lips, Milica a kiss on the cheek, and then he started cooking. Even though he's a wizard, he rarely uses any magic. Everything is done by hand in this household.

For Milica and her mother, dinner time was a little break until the lessons started again. After dinner, the subject changed. They would usually head outside into the backyard to teach Milica some physical skills. Today though, may just turn out to be a little different.

The two ladies went outside, her father following them to watch. Just as they were ready to get started, an owl flew over, and dropped a letter right into Milica's hand before deciding to use the fence as a resting place. Slightly confused, Milica opened it. She knew of Hogwarts, of course, but she didn't expect to get an invitation. She wasn't very gifted magically: only having had her first instance of magic at ten years old. Besides, she wasn't even a full human.

After opening the letter, her suspicions were confirmed. She was accepted to Hogwarts. Many things went through her mind. She knew of the 'racism' that went on in the Wizarding World, her father being a prime example. However, that was a long time ago. Perhaps it would be a fun adventure, to get herself involved with magic. After silently considering it, she decided not to take the risk.

"No way", Milica said, "I will not attend this place that has been so obnoxious to you, father". Her father nodded in understanding, before asking her to reconsider. "I understand Mili, but this is an opportunity you can't miss out on. It is such an enriching experience. Please reconsider". She looked over to her mother, but she had a neutral expression on her face. She looked back over to her father, who had a hopeful expression on his face. "Fine. I will go to Hogwarts".

Her mother smiled, and her father celebrated. "Lessons are cancelled. We are to celebrate now", her mother said. After writing a response and giving it to the owl, who then flew off immediately, they went back inside to celebrate this new chapter in Milica's life. Deep down, Milica knew that this new chapter would change her, in ways she couldn't yet foresee.
