Kai was tired. She was so tired of being lied to. Tired of feeling like she didn't belong. Tired of being alone. And today was the final straw.

She wasn't like her parents. Never had been, never will be. And now, she new why. She was adopted. And they had lied. They told her it was her mother's maiden name. But it wasnt. They hadn't even named her themselves. She was already laughed at for the messy job she had done with cutting and dying the ends of her blond hair. And now something weird had happened. She had gotten so mad, she was shaking, and all the picture frames had flown off the walls. She was terrified, and had run out of the house.

It had happened hours before, but she couldn't stop thinking about it. Kai had been walking for a while now and finally she looked up and froze. She was totally lost, standing in trees. For a minute, she stood quietly. And then she started to cry.

Kai hated crying, but she couldn't stop it. As the tears flooded down her face, she threw back her head and screamed, releasing everything, her anger pain and sadness, with one sound of pure anguish.

She stood for a moment longer, chest heaving, before she continued walking through the trees, running away from things she didn't want to face.

October 11 2021

Every week on this day, the mansion would turn into unimaginable chaos and noise. The two closest families, the Weis and the Draxons, would hang out together in one of their mansions. Yexian had to leave her own house to be able to have some peace. She took her book and water bottle and left the mansion and headed towards the forest that’s displayed infront of her room’s window. Picking a quiet spot under a tree, she sat and opened her book. She enjoyed this, reading her favourite books in the forest that knows her name, her silent footsteps and the voices that even her family didn’t know she could make.

After reading for a while, Yexian sensed strange sounds in the forest. It wasn’t the sound of the animals she became friends with, it was footsteps. No one ever set foot on this forest before—it was secluded, she was the only person to come here. The sound suddenly stopped, so Yexian decided to ignore it and continue reading, but before she can even look at the book she heard a very loud scream. It wasn’t the scream she hears everyday thanks to her cousins, nor was it a scream for help. Yexian got a little scared, a stranger in a forest with limited exits and is shouting that loud. However, she decided to continue reading because the forest became quiet again, she had her animal friends to protect her so there was nothing to worry about.

A few minutes later, Yexian noticed a shadow approaching, she was certain it was the same stranger that shouted, so she moved back a little to hide within the long branches of the green tree. However she saw the figure was a child so she calmed down, closed the book and watched the child carefully.

Kai stopped walking again, tears streaming down her face. Her shoulders shook with silent sobs. She didn't understand anything anymore. This made her heart a little colder. Kai already had issues with people. At a young age, she was bullied, laughed at. Her parents--Not my parents came her minds fierce correction--were barely at home, and when they were they brought their work with them.

No one understands her, and the things she thought she had understood no longer made sense, but at the same time it made perfect sense. She curled her hands into fists, and vowed to never trust anyone again. But then, her sharp senses picked up on something. She could here breathing, but she could tell it was human. Her body went rigid.

Kai whipped around and her eyes landed on another girl. The female had to be around her age, and Kai was startled. She stood there, frozen, her void like green eyes absorbing every detail. She didn't know who this person was, but her curiosity made her wonder what the girl's name was, who she was, what she was doing. And yet, her throat closed before she could say anything and she was mortified by the fact that as she tried to speak all she did was...squeak.

The shadow Yexian saw stopped walking. Yexian could clearly hear soundless cries coming from the girl in front of her. She put the bookmark in, closed the book and continued staring at the girl. Suddenly the silhouette turned around, Yexian could now see the green highlights that are complementary to the girl’s eye colour. She wouldn’t lie though— she liked it.

However, she still didn’t move. She just continued watching the girl wearing a full black outfit. When the other girl tried to talk, no sound came out other than a low squeal. “Is she scared?” Yexian thought and put the book down on the dark grass. Then she got up and stood in her place, she didn’t know what to do. All she really wanted was to comfort the girl, this was the first time she got this feeling.

Yexian never talked to anyone unless necessary, and even then, she only said a few words; as a result, she didn’t know how to start her conversation. She also didn’t know what language the other girl speaks. She clearly doesn’t look Chinese, so she can’t use that language and the only other language she knows at this moment was English. “Hello…” she said with a low voice. The sound felt strange, almost too loud after her silence. She wondered if the girl even heard it, but she didn’t take it back. That was her first time starting a conversation, so she wondered if she had said it right.

Kai felt an intense relief at the sound of the other girl's voice, relieving her of the stress of speaking first. She cleared her throat. Let's try this again.

"Hi..." Her voice was soft, but at least she had spoken.

Briefly, her eyes flicked to the books that the other girl had. Oh! She likes to read! But why is she out here? Is she alone? Is she hiding from something? What does she like to read? Her thoughts chased each other around her head in circles, and she took a moment, closing her eyes to collect herself and calm down a bit.

Opening her eyes again, she reached up to wipe away her tears, rubbing her face probably a bit too rough to just wipe away tears. Kai felt that when she cried it meant she was weak, and she refused to look or feel weak in front of a stranger.

"Sorry if I disturbed you," she murmured, ducking her head with embarrassment as well as in an effort to hide the tears still in her eyes.

Snap out of it, Kai, stop crying, she thought fiercely, her body stiff, her jaw set with frustration at herself, at the people she thought were her parents, at everything for being so messed up. A few thoughts flitted through her head, wondering what this stranger thought of her, and if the other girl was about to tell her to go away or yell at Kai for interrupting her reading.

Seeing the girl calm down after hearing her voice, she was, for the first time, glad the girl didn’t leave or be mean to her. Then she heard a soft voice, almost as low as hers was. Yexian nodded slightly, her gaze following where the girl’s eyes shifted—towards the book she had placed carefully on the ground. “Does she like reading? Does she know this book?” Yexian wondered, curiosity flickering through her normally calm and unreadable expression.

Then the girl wiped her tears a little harshly, which made Yexian a little worried, “Huh? Is she punishing herself for crying?” she thought while still looking at the girl in front of her. Then the soft voice appeared again. “N-no.. it’s okay, you didn’t disturb anything” Yexian replied. That was a very long sentence she said there, and that stranger was the first to hear it.

But then she noticed the girl’s body tense, her shoulders stiff, her whole frame tightening. Yexian tilted her head, hesitated, and then asked gently, “Are you okay…? You look tired…” Silence filled the air for a short while before she continued “What are you doing here? Are you lost?” Yexian suddenly stopped talking. She thought she had asked way too many questions and lowered her gaze, trying to look away.

Kai seemed to relax slightly. She hadn't been yelled at, and the other girl seemed shy and nervous as well, just from the way she held herself, like she didn't talk to a lot of people. With a soft, relieved sigh, Kai pushed her hair out of her face, silently cursing herself for the terrible job she'd done on it. As curiosity flickered through the other girls expression, Kai wondered what she was thinking.

Her eyes roamed over the stranger and the space the other girl had been taking up. She handled the book with such care...I wonder what it is that she's reading? Kai wondered.

When the questions left this strange girls mouth, Kai noted that she immediately looked away. Is she embarrassed? I wonder why? Oh. Is it because that's considered personal? Well...I guess, but she did just hear me scream earlier, i'm sure she heard it, so it's a valid question.

Kai decided to answer honestly. "I am tired. And I'm not okay," she said quietly. "I ran away, and I ended up here. I am certainly lost but....I'm okay with being lost right now," Kai admitted. She wanted to tell the girl it was alright for asking, but she couldn't seem to find the words to say it, so she hoped her answering could reassure the girl instead.

Yexian saw the girl relax once more. She felt happy that her words were able to calm her down. A second later, the girl’s other dark emerald green eyes appeared. They were beautiful. Being locked in her home, Yexian always thought that people with green eyes are always loud and crazy—thanks to her cousins—and as a child, she hated anyone with green eyes. But the eyes she just saw were astonishing and quiet.

Yexian felt a wave of embarrassment. She hoped the stranger didn’t think she was intruding on her private life. However, when she heard the girl’s quiet voice, she was relieved. That relief, though, vanished as quickly as it came when she heard what the girl said. Since Yexian never talked to her family and always kept herself—and her emotions—locked away. She never had to listen to others vent to her, so this sudden outpouring of emotion hit her like a hard rock.

Even though the venting was sudden, Yexian came back to reality and heard every word the girl said. She felt bad. A small part of her even wanted to hug the girl. But could she ever do that? It felt too difficult. “Oh.. uhm..” she paused for a moment searching for the right words. She wanted to ask why she ran away but she didn’t want to intrude. “I.. I see you have been running for a while now, you must be tired.. Would you like to sit and... maybe vent out a little?” Yexian was surprised she had managed to say long sentences, more than once. She hoped the girl felt reassured by her words.
