Clarke sat down near the water. The wind was blowing her hair in all directions so she tied it back into a simple mid-ponytail. She pulled out her Charms textbook and a quill. She opened to where she had tucked her parchment at the end of the class earlier that day.

She looked at the first question she had copied from the board at the end of class. She read and reread the question multiple times, but didn't understand it. Finally, after trying to do homework for a few more minutes, she put her textbook back in her bag and stared out into the dark water of the Great Lake. She saw a few students walking on the far end of the lake, chatting and laughing, and wished she could be them. Carefree and happy.

She looked down at the palms of her hands. They had little impressions in them from constantly digging her fingernails into them. She had started that ever since she had gotten back to Hogwarts. It had become a habit when she was anxious or stressed, though, it was ruining her palms.

Just then, Clarke heard a rustling of grass near her. She quickly hid her hands, waiting for the person to pass. But they didn't. Instead, they stopped.

@Clarke Olverin

Ruby Amethyst Diumme was just casually strolling throughout the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry grounds when she just saw a girl with curly brown and red highlighted hair with a book beside her. Wait, I think I recognize her. I’ve seen her at the Gryffindor table a lot during breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Is that Clarke Olverin??? she thought in her head. She quickly realized that she was caught staring at her and blushed slightly. Oh no. I gotta apologize, but also greet Clarke Olverin. He-Hello, I-I am Ruby Diumme, first year, Ravenclaw, 12 years old. S-Sorry for, er, staring a-at you… she said shyly, blushing so much to the point where she looked like she got Transfigured into a tomato or an apple. She bowed a little bit. Manners. I need manners. The goddamn manners. After a few seconds, she stood up straight again, tucking a strand of black hair behind her ear, adjusting her glasses a little bit. Ruby Amethyst Diumme awaited her response slightly anxiously. I hope that I do not seem awkward. However, she noticed Clarke hiding her hands. Wait, what the hell is she doing, why is she hiding her hands? Wait… does she need help? Maybe. Maybe not. But, still! Sorry for being ‘intrusive’, but why are you hiding your hands? Are you okay? She had a feeling that Clarke may be hiding something.

Clarke turned around and found herself looking at a girl. She had short black hair and pink glasses. And she was staring at Clarke.

"He-Hello, I-I am Ruby Diumme, first year, Ravenclaw, 12 years old. S-Sorry for, er, staring a-at you…" Ruby said. Clarke found herself amused by the fact that this girl had turned bright red. And that she was stuttering. It was small, but it was the most amusement Clarke had gotten for a long time. Then she felt cruel. How could she laugh at someone else's expense? To make up for being mean, Clarke looked at the girl's clothes. They were pretty. Colourful. Clarke only wore a faded grey hoodie and jeans. Grey seemed to be her colour nowadays.

Clarke didn't speak for a moment. But she also didn't get the chance because Ruby spoke again, "sorry for being ‘intrusive’, but why are you hiding your hands? Are you okay?"

Clarke stiffened. "I'm fine," she said, edgily. Not another person who 'cared about her'. She wouldn't fall for it. "What do you want?" She sounded kinder this time. That was to better disguise her hurt of the past few months, so that this girl would leave her alone sooner.

Ruby narrowed her eyes oh so slightly, to the point where you had to be a bird of prey to see the difference. Oh ho, a black cat, I see. Is she struggling with something? Is she okay? If anything, she is definitely not fine from the way she's speaking and how she stiffened up. She looked at Clarke's posture. Scared... Is she? Perhaps. Well, technically, nothing, Ruby said politely. Perhaps I could get to know her better. Besides, maybe it could be just like in books. The black cat and golden retriever get to know each other, become friends, best friends... Sometimes even more than friends. Ruby stood there as quietly and confidently as she could. How could she try to help her schoolmate while not scaring her in the process??? She slowly pushed her glasses further up her nose, observing Clarke's facial expression. Hopefully, I'll make a new friend. Ruby smiled, without showing her teeth. She read in a very helpful book about communication and persuasion, that smiling can make someone transform in a way. She opened up her satchel and glanced at the books in there. Homer's The Odyssey, The Rise and Fall of the Dark Arts, and How to Win Friends and Influence People for Teen Girls. Alas, another mystery. What should I read??? I haven't read The Odyssey yet, so perhaps I will read this.

"Well, technically nothing," the girl replied.

Clarke looked at her. "Maybe just leave me alone then. I'm not interested in talking right now."

Clarke didn't want anyone to know what was going on. It wasn't their business.

"Don't think you are going to get a new friend because I'm not available, I have enough friends already."

Ruby smiled at Clarke, but Clarke didn't return the gesture. What was there to smile about Clarke noticed Ruby look into her bag. What was she looking in there for? She saw some books and wondered what the girl was interested in, in terms of reading. Was it more fantasy, phycology, adventure, mystery? Clarke liked a lot of genres. A taste of everything was what she preferred. Lost in this though, Clarke forgot that Ruby was still there.

Clarke stood up. "I'm going to go back to my common room now. I have lots of homework to do." With that, she turned and walked up the hill towards the castle. She looked down at her hands. They were red with her fingernail indents. She stuffed her hands in her pockets to prevent herself from doing it again. She knew it wasn't good for her hands, but it she felt so uncomfortable and didn't know what to do with them.
