Hufflepuff. Hufflepuff. The word echoes in my head like the sound of a whip penetrating someone's flesh. The Sorting Hat sorted me into Hufflepuff, binding me for seven years to wizards, each one more smiling and kind than the last.
It wouldn't have bothered me if he had sent me to Slytherin. In truth, I would have loved it. Ravenclaw would have allowed me to learn. Gryffindor was still okay. But HUFFLEPUFF? Never.
And yet, here I was, on a table that shouldn't, couldn't be mine. Next to girls all smiling, happy, ready to prove that they were loyal and ready to do anything for their friends. Honestly, I didn't understand why the Sorting Hat had sent me to this house.
Me, Ruby, a girl as lonely as she was brave, as reckless as she was impulsive. Did he really think that associating me with this stupid house would help me? It must have been a bad dream.
My sister would be happy, she who had been sorted into Slytherin years earlier. She would be delighted that I was making a fool of myself by joining the black and yellows. Tears threatened to flow, but I didn't want to give a false image of myself to the people around me.
If I had to fall, it was better to do it silently, with grace. My face must have reflected nothing but despair, even hatred, and it was surely visible. miles away, but I didn't care. If the old hat thought he'd managed his distribution well, I was going to prove him wrong.
Friends, I wouldn't make any. Allies, accomplices, that was another matter. All I had to do was find the right people. And the idiots in my house would do just fine.

Sorry it's kinda late!
Nova smiled brightly as the first years slowly but surely got sorted, cheering along with her housemates when one got sorted into Hufflepuff. Her Hufflepuff robes were neat, the yellow undertones shining proudly. The cheering finally stopped and everyone settled down as the last student made their way to the table. As Nova glanced at the new first years who were all tittering nervously, she noticed one girl who had a stoney expression on her face.
She seemed deep in thought, muttering to herself in annoyance. Her bright red hair contrasted with her grayish eyes, and Nova raised an eyebrow as she scoffed at something. Nova was a bit confused, wondering what could possibly have annoyed her enough on her first night at Hogwarts. Making a quick decision as the Great Hall started to fill with the aroma of fresh food, Nova slipped into the seat next to the girl and offered her a small smile.
Once all the food had appeared, Nova spooned on some potatoes as she spoke. "Hi, welcome to Hufflepuff," she murmured, shooting another grin at the girl. "It's the best house, you'll love it here." She added, biting some chicken. Nova hummed appreciatively at the burst of flavor, eyes widening in surprise. The house elves had definitely worked hard, as they did every year.
The girl was still scowling at her plate like it had said something offensive in plate-nese. Nova decided to continue, tone light. "I'm Nova, what about you?" She asked, curls bouncing as she shifted on her seat to look at the girl for an answer.
