It was the day. A day for years that Dylan had never been excited for. It was a constant reminder of what he had lost and what he missed the most about his life. September third. His birthday. Thought that day was different. He was a teenager now. Thirteen. The year when everything would now begin to change. He knew only a couple days before his cousin, Avery, had also turned thirteen, but the feeling still hadn’t hit him yet. The feeling that he was growing up and actually a teenager. It was a strange thought. The fact that he was now old enough to start making his own decisions. It almost didn’t feel right in a way. Dylan sat on the grounds staring out at the lake as ducks and waterfowl swam lazily across the water. It was a peaceful and perfect way to spend his birthday. Though he knew all too well that the whole day wouldn’t be spent alone. The feeling that something was about to happen filled him. He just didn’t know what it meant. Instead of accepting the feeling, he pushed it away as his thoughts drifted to the news he hadn’t received. His grandfather had promised to stay in contact, but nothing had come. Not even a “happy birthday to my favorite grandson!” It saddened Dylan. He didn’t mind that his grandfather hadn’t written, but what saddened him the most is that he forgot to write. Before his grandfather got sick, he was the only person from home that always managed to contact him. Especially when Dylan felt the most alone. Now those memories were only a figment of the past. A past that couldn’t and wouldn’t be repeated ever again.

Dylan looked up and blinked in surprise to see his closest friend, Summer sitting down next to him. A wrapped gift she gently handed towards him. "Wow. I didn't even know anyone knew my birthday was today. Thanks." Dylan said to her with a smile on his face. His spirits lifting immediately and his worry about his grandfather was forgotten. Dylan carefully opened the gift. Not wanting to tear through it and accidentally ruin whatever was inside. His eyes widened not only in excitement, but also surprise as he viewed what Summer had given to him. "This. . . This is amazing. Thank you so much!" Dylan said to her. Hoping his gratitude would be shown through his words. Dylan pulled the photo book and marshmallows out of their wrapping and examined them. He had so many ideas of what he could put in the photo book. Memories that would never be forgotten. All he had to do was grab a camera, then he would be all set to go. Then Dylan opened the bag of marshmallows and plucked one into his mouth. Offering the bag to Summer as he savored the rich flavor the marshmallow had. He couldn't believe how long it had been since he had last eaten one until then. Obviously it had been too long. Even a day was too long according to him.

Dylan smiled before saying, "I know my grandparents have a camera, so I'll be sure to borrow it and take some pictures of Wales and maybe even England if I get to visit again and bring them to you since you don't get to see it often. If you'd like, of course." Dylan leaned into the soft grass and soaked in the sun as he awaited her reply. Glad that the day was warm and sunny though fall was approaching very soon. He laughed as she asked if he wanted her to sing him happy birthday with a marshmallow. "Do as you wish, but I'm perfectly fine without the singing if you don't feel like doing it. It's enough that you actually found me and brought me gifts on my birthday. Though I feel like a terrible friend. When's your birthday so I can surprise you as well?" He grinned up at her. The day had really turned for the brighter when she came. Her name suited her. Wherever Summer went, Dylan noticed she always shed light even on the darkest of situations. That alone was one of the many traits Dylan admired about her. Not only was she resilient, but she was also the kind of person you could trust with anything. Even your life. She seemed loyal and someone Dylan knew he would never forget.

Dylan nodded in complete understanding. Going to Hogwarts for the balls was one thing, but actually seeing the English and Welsh countryside? Well, that alone was a thing in itself that brought back past memories that otherwise would be forgotten. "I'm glad to have gotten the chance to go back. Maybe someday you'll be able to as well." He smiled. Hoping that she would get the chance. Dylan laughed and smiled as she sang. He wasn't laughing at her singing. No. She had a great voice compared to his, but he was laughing that he finally had a friend to celebrate with. Ever since he was eight and moved to America, he hadn't really interacted with many people his own age until he had been accepted into Ilvermony. "Thank you for that. I really needed it." Dylan said once he had regained his composure. "May tenth. Noted. Expect a major surprise from your friend Dylan here." He laughed slightly at that. Hoping she wouldn't think he was crazy. Dylan munched on another marshmallow. Relishing in the sweet sticky fluffiness it brought. No matter what Dylan believed a marshmallow would always bring a smile to his face. Even when he didn't feel like smiling at all.

Dylan thought for a moment. There had been times he himself had asked a similar question. What did he hope to do when he had finally graduated from Ilvermony and become an adult? It seemed so far away at the moment yet so close that he could almost touch it. What did he want to do? What were his plans for furthering his education or what he wanted to do with his life? His mother had always inspired him. She was one of those people that loved others no matter who they were. That was why she was a healer. Naturally and trained. Maybe he could be like her? Then there was his father. Strong, yet talented. He held their small family together with his steadfast personality and calm demeanor. Dylan was more like his father. In looks and personality. Though he did uphold some traits from his mother. Like the natural feeling to want to help people that were hurting. "Hmmm. I've honestly never thought about it before. I do know I will be moving back to Swansea hopefully after I graduate, but as far as work? That I don't know. At the moment I'm considering becoming a healer. They have such an important role in keeping people alive and well. I can barely stand to see someone hurting and I just feel powerless to do anything about it." Dylan explained. Hoping what he had said made sense instead of being the complete mumbo jumbo that was in his head.
