An explosion of glass
Bree sighs unhappily as everyone leaves the classroom. Hating having to clean up is something she always hated. Loving to volunteer is also something she loves doing. Or loved. Now shes hating it. But hey maybe it will put her on the professor's good side. If he has one. Everyone has to have a good side right? Also she volunteered to get her mind off of her grandmother and to stop herself from camping out in the owlery again. That wasn't very... Well nice. And it kinda stunk in there. Also someone else is here. Some random Slytherin guy she doesn't know. But still she doesnt have to do the entire room by herself. Although it would've been nice to be stuck here with someone she does know.Word count: 478

Starting with cleaning off where she was sitting she gathers up all of the cauldrons. Putting them all in a pile on the end of the table she starts wiping them down. While cleaning she gets trapped in the tornado of bad and worried thoughts. All of them include her grandmother dying one way or another. She's sick. A cold her mother said she might have. Might is the key word there. Might. Which also means she might have something else worse. Like cancer! She gasps slightly as the thought runs through her mind.
Trying to pull herself out of this tornado she switches her mind to the task at and the things she is in need of doing later. Homework. Need to catch up on homework for History of Magic. Also finding a way to get notes for that class so she could pass it when she gets a test for it. History of Magic she somehow managed to not attend for the week. In other words staying up in the owlery forever waiting for a letter back from her parents.
Once she finishes cleaning up the table she goes and grabs as many dirty cauldrons she could carry. Managing to make two trips she wipes the spot where the cauldrons were and went back to the sink in order to clean them. Once shes satisfied with how clean they were she left to collect the glass phials.
She starts cleaning them. Scrubbing them hard and probably cleaning it three more times she finishes about half of them. Grabbing another one she gets pulled back into that tornado of thoughts. Not paying attention, a phial slips out of her hand, shattering in the sink.
Cruising herself she goes and picks up the pieces, face red with embarrassment. She glances up to see if anyone else notices. The guy that's also in there doesn't seem to notice the commotion. Dumping the prices into the trash she cuts herself.
"Dammit!" She shouts. Now the guy definitely noticed. Her face flaring up bright red again she goes and rinses off her finger.

An explosion of glass

Aleks scrawled down notes about homework in a handwriting the boy himself knew he would no longer be able to read in two days’ time. The “a” slipped into the “b,” and the small “c” looked as though it was drunk and trying to beat up the rest of the letters. Even though the young Slytherin was hardly a particularly studious boy, Potions class fascinated him. There was simply a fun factor when dangerous fumes drifted into the air and threatened to explode!
The Slytherin slowly completed the notes on the upcoming assignments with a gentle sigh. In the meantime, he deliberately ignored how most of the other students had already filed out of the classroom, leaving only small movements flickering at the edge of his vision. Carefully, he let the quill’s silver tip glide across the notebook page. More ink spilled than intended, disguising the white parchment as a dalmatian. The brown-haired boy leaned further forward, intent on quickly capturing the professor’s last words on paper despite the mess.
Sounds pressed in on him. His hair slipped forward across his face just as the finishing touch was added. The quill tip stabbed into the paper as if in an aggressive celebration-ritual taking place. With the relief, Aleks's senses seemed to retreat back into his head. The air still laced with potion fumes rushed into his lungs in a surge of salt and nameless roots.
“Finished,” he whispered. The boy briefly closed his eyes and straightened in his seat. Leaning back, he let the quill fall from his fingers without the slightest regard for the paper‘s fate. It may as well turn into an ocean of ink for all he cares.
When out of nowhere, the sound of glass bursting echoed! The sharp crack thundered through his ears and settled like a ripple of unease across the Potion classroom. Aleks was startled. For a moment, he wasn’t sure if he had only imagined it. Irritated, he opened his eyes and glanced toward the lectern by the door. The professor seemed to be gone—but a bright voice followed the glass with a loud: “Dammit!”
A grimace stretched on his features. Aleks turned toward the direction the voice had come from—and to his surprise, a girl stood close to the old sink. He didn't recognise her as anyone he's met before. Brown hair fell in a soft, close frame over her shoulders, while her delicate face was painted like a fire truck in the middle of an identity crisis. Aleks’s bewilderment lodged itself in his gut. For a moment the air stuck in his chest—before the situation fully sank in.
It twisted his stomach. A sharper worry spurred him to part his lips, addressing the stranger with a gentle, “Are you alright?”
Aleks gaze flicked briefly over her figure, hand bracing against the old wooden desk as he slid down from the stool. The red collar of her uniform screamed Gryffindor—but the rest? His brow knit. Her presence felt like the one of a swan—pretty and small, unfit for what Aleks imagined a Gryffindor to be!
The wild-haired Slytherin approached her at a careful pace. His head tipped slightly to the side, thoughtfulness etching concern into his usually playful eyes. With a careful, almost protective glance, he traced her shoulders and the line of her neck.
“Did you hurt yourself?”, he added almost immediately. The memory of glass shattering began drumming in his ears like the kind of circus filled with grotesque imageries! The fume thick air was forgotten immediately.

An explosion of glass
Jumping at the sound of his voice the young Gryffindor turns around. "Y-yes. Im fine," she stutters in surprise. He gets off of the stool he was sitting on. He walks towards her almost cautiously as he gently asks if she hurt herself. Nodding slightly she turns off the water removing her hand from under the faucet, "I just cut my finger. Its not that bad."Word count: 407

She walks back to her desk and produces a band aid. Wrapping her finger in it expertly she looks back up at him and smiles softly. "All better now! What's your name? " She tries to recall a time where she might have heard his name before. Nope no memory of it. Most of her memories here are just a blur. She blushes slightly once she realizes how distracted and distant from everything shes been since the news of her grandmother. "I've never noticed you in this class before. Honestly I really haven't noticed anyone in this class" She lets out a soft laugh, realizing how true this was as she said it, "And by the way Im Bree."
She walks back to the area where she shattered the glass phial in the sink. The glass sparkled in it the same way stars would sparkle during the darkest hour of night. Absolutely gorgeous especially with the red in it from the drops of blood from her finger. The way it sparkled was memorizing. After a moment of being memorized from the glass and staring at it, she begins to gingerly pick up the rest of the shattered glass pieces. Once she finishes doing it she rinses out the sink with cold water.
Drying her hands, she spins around facing the Slytherin boy. Smiling once more at him she begins to speak, easing into a conversation with him. In order to break the silence of this class. "So why are you staying here after class? A conversation needed with the professor? Or perhaps some extra studying?" She lifts herself up onto a table sitting on the edge allowing her feet to swing freely. Tilting her head slightly, she waits for him to answer.
Trying to keep herself from falling into the endless ocean of thoughts, she tries to focus on his voice while he talks. His voice fills her ears like music. Accomplishing not thinking about her grandma she smiles. For the first time someone is able to distract her from thinking.

With a hasty turn the girl spun around. Aleks could not help but compare her to a deer, entirely delicate, without a trace of malice even in the startled moment. The Slytherin tilted his head further, this time choosing the other side. “Y-yes. I’m fine,” she replied, just as he was stepping toward her. Then she nodded at his question whether she was hurt.
The hiss of the faucet died away, leaving only silence and her answer behind. The girl shared she had cut her finger, though it wasn’t anything serious. Whether it was, Aleks would rather see for himself. His heart beat louder, fuels by worry. As she suddenly darted away and toward the desk, his brows drew down in critical concern.
The Boy kept his blue eyes fixed on her back and the softness of her movements. He drew the potion stuffed air through his chest and followed, praying inwardly that she would not feel him intruding too close. His legs froze, demanding him to grant more personal space. Observantly Aleks stood still. To his relief, she swiftly turned back to him.
As her body shifted, Aleks was briefly reminded of someone practising ballet. A small smile flickered across his face, though his eyes searched and instantly found her hands. They clung. From a distance he traced the lines of her fingers until his gaze caught on the bandage. The sight smoothed his features like a hot iron pressed over an annoying crease.
He lowered his lids, exhaling as the tension that had woven itself unnoticed into his shoulders slipped into the trash. She asked his name, and a small curl of her lips seemed to weave itself into her voice. Either that, or asking question had her curl the last syllables naturally.
Aleks opened his eyes. His vision snagged on the rose-colored hue of her cheeks. The shade spread like a peach-tinted paint across her skin, as though it were the freshly painted facade of a cupcake shop in Portsmouth. “I’ve never noticed you in this class before. Honestly I really haven’t noticed anyone in this class,” she added, followed by a sweet laugh that spilled from her lungs, and finally—her name: Bree.
“Aleks,” he replied, far shorter than usual. Quickly, he added only a small, “Glad you didn’t cut yourself deeper,” before she seemed to set off again.! Aleks curiously watched the way her steps carried her back to the sink.
Now that they had introduced themselves, the ice was broken? Or at least the thin layer that had whispered to him he ought to keep his distance. She seemed far tougher than some skittish creature after all.
Therefore, Aleks followed. He shifted slightly to skirt one of the last tables, cutting between a large cauldron and a small shelf. This way, within a few steps and even fewer seconds, he managed to catch a glimpse inside the sink. Aleks had to crane his neck, his eyes narrowing into attentive slits.
Something gleamed within and sparkled thin and transparent. Shards of glass spoke between red and water, offering an idea of what had happened. It must have shattered earlier, driving its sharp edges into her skin. At least, Aleks tried to explain it to himself that way. He lowered his head back into its normal position—partly so as not to spontaneously transform into a giraffe. The stuffy air was completely forgotten by now. The information mattered about as much as a child to the richest two percent of society.
With another step toward her, Aleks leaned against the table to his left. His hip pressed into the edge, and a sigh slipped from his lips. The sharp wood tried him him with it‘s edge, but failed anyway. Peacefully, the corners of his mouth drew up. She seemed to mirror him or perhaps he mirrored her? Turned face to face, the moment suddenly felt disarmed, as though not even a comedic whirlwind could carry it off. Then, through the silence between them, her questions came shooting forth. It was almost startling how sharp they landed:
“So why are you staying here after class? A conversation needed with the professor? Or perhaps some extra studying?”
Even if she had done it consciously, the Gryffindor could not have managed to ask it any more precisely. Aleks lifted his shoulders and let them sink again—shrugging casually. The girl seemed to settle herself more comfortably into the conversation now. He watched as she hoisted herself onto the tabletop. Normally, he would have liked to follow suit, but instead pressed his hand against the wood first. Aleks could swear he already felt it giving way.
“Oh, I was just finishing some notes for homework. My handwriting is crap, so I write slowly and had to go over it again…” The honesty all but spilled out of him, followed by a laugh at his own expense: “What about yours? Surely better than mine.”

An explosion of glass
Allowing her legs to swing freely, she tilts her head slightly as she listens to his answers. After he finishes talking, she allows the silence to take over for a moment as she goes through what she has learned about him. Very little. Only his name and why he was here. Now why she was here? That's... that's was more complicated than his. At least in her head it was. Grandmas sick with cancer, frustrating mothers and distant fathers who you rarely get a moment with and mistakenly volunteering. Now how do you say all of that without saying all of that? "Well, uh its kinda complicated. Well I think it is. But what I've learned from it? Is to never volunteer to clean anything to get your mind off of things."
Finally stilling her legs she hops off of the table. Zigzagging pointlessly through the tables, she ends up next to him. Hopping back up onto the table she crosses her legs and turn to face him. The sounds of activity from outside almost blankets them. The sound of feet running, students laughing, yelling and talking, fills the room. Waiting until it passes, she looks around, avoiding the awkwardness of staring at him.
"We should do something Life changing. Anything." She says this once the noise passes. Doing a quick survey of the room, she notes that its already mostly cleaned, "Anything really. Something exciting, exhilarating, something so big that everyone has to notice."
Her eyes sparkle with the idea and her mind whirls with possibilities. Flashing him a smile she continues, "But not something that'll get was expelled. I don't think you'd wanna get expelled." She lets out a soft laugh at this, "Any ideas?" Pulling her legs up under her, she waits for his answer. If she were with her grandma, they would've cancelled everything for the day and planned something out. Her grandma. Shaking off the feeling of sadness, she hears a noise by the door. Quickly turning, she watches as a first year comes in. He wanders towards the professors desk, unaware that there are other people in the room.
Smiling softly, she clears her throat, stifling a laugh when the young students jumps a mile from the desk. "I-i wasn't doing anything. J-just..." He holds up his hands, showing a paper that he has. He quickly puts the paper down on the desks and then hurries out of the room, looking back nervously. Once the first year is gone, she turns back around towards Aleks.
"Back to what we were talking about. Any more ideas? Start a protest. Although I dot really have anything to protest."
