Just hanging around
I slip out of the Great hall and head out towards the grounds. A book is smuggled under my arm and some food. It's just around lunch time and honestly I don't want to be around a huge crowd listening to everyone chattering away happily. I know they don't know but still. With grandma being sick, even if its a cold, Im worried sick. My grandma doesn't get sick a lot. She has a very strong immune system. So when shes sick, I am too. Sick with worry.Word count: 317

I look around and find a nice sturdy tree with lots of branches and leaves to hide me. Walking over to it I look around to see if anyone followed. If someone did they'll also realize after the lunch bell rings I'm skipping my next class. Reaching for the lowest branch I pull myself up. Climbing the tree expertly, I finally find a nice spot and get cozy.
I open my book and a letter falls out. Catching it before it falls all the way down I scan it. It's the letter I got. I start rereading it, bringing back the wave of sadness and worry that hit me when I first read it.
Her ever so formal colour of black and ever so short letters she writes are never reassuring. I fold the letter back up and start reading my book.Dear, BreeSeptember 2nd 2025

Just hanging around
Joseph was uncomfortably full, which was unfortunate, since the day's lunch looked particularly appetising. Potatoes. Scrambled eggs. A delicious spread of something thick and buttery.
Not today, he thought, dropping from his tiptoes as a group of students shoved past him. Cutlery clinked against plates. Seated students, eager to feast. Ugh, the ever-multiplying temptation of food.
He tore his gaze away. Better to miss out on good food than risk becoming a Joseph-shaped fountain spewing vomit across the hall. One public spectacle he was glad to avoid.
Joseph turned, threading his way out of the hall. The smell of overcooked eggs chased him all the way to the corridor. He needed fresh air. Fast. Somewhere ghostly eggs couldn't haunt him for regrettable decisions.
There. The grounds. Perfect for indecisive boys fleeing lunch.
Joseph grinned as he stepped out, taking in a grateful whiff of the afternoon air. Sunlight landed on him. He kicked at a loose pebble, which skittered across the ground before stopping a few paces away.
Most of his trips here had been with his pet rock, Astra, during their daily tours of the grounds - the Hufflepuff would skip around, Astra bouncing along behind him. Exercise was important, even for rocks. You couldn't convince Joseph otherwise.
They'd stop every now and then, only to check out something interesting. A bright green beetle. A gnarly tree root. A twig shaped like a headless figure. Maybe someday he'd bring a notebook to document his findings.
Joseph collapsed at the foot of a tree, letting his gaze drift up to the low-hanging branches. He loved the shade. The cosy haven-
Something moved overhead.
Joseph froze, his jaw dropping.
A girl, on the tree. Clutching a book and a little note. Talk about unexpected discoveries.
"Um... hi," he said, scrambling from beneath the tree. “Sorry for… uh…well…” He trailed off, vaguely aware that he was talking too much. What was he even apologising for?
“Never mind. You’re on a tree! Cool!”
He wanted to smack himself. What was he? A three-year old psychopath? Glancing away, Joseph gulped, half-hoping a big red “RESTART CONVERSATION” button would fall out of the sky. None did. The world wasn’t very helpful with random provisions.
Either he bolted now, or endured the most awkward moment in all of Hogwarts history - starring the one and only Joseph Sims.
