⎯ Physical Description ⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯

Ewan MacLeod is a lean and lanky young kid, already standing close to 5 feet (152 centimeters). He sports long-ish auburn hair (often tousled and unruly, or ‘windswept’), whose color contrasts nicely with his blue-grey eyes. His complexion is fair and freckled, with rosy undertones (which are most visible due to his cheeks flushing easily in cold temperatures). His mouth presents a slight upturn at the corners of his lips, making it look as though he’s always on the verge of smiling. His ears are slightly larger than you’d expect, sticking out of his hair just a touch.

As for his clothing, you can tell from it that Ewan is a tad distracted: his robes are often a little uneven (some buttons are unbuttoned, his tie is looser than it should be, etc.), with ink smudges on cuffs due to frequent note-taking, and pockets bulging from ‘rare finds’ (feathers, stones, odd scraps of parchment with doodles on them). When he isn’t wearing his school-issued uniform, Ewan likes to wear wool jumpers (usually a size too big, and just as frequently half untucked) in dark greens, grey and muted blue colors; other times he’ll wear button-down patterned shirts (plaid and stripes) over simple t-shirts, paired with either jeans or corduroy trousers (often with mud and grass stains on the knees from wandering about); his wardrobe also includes worn duffle coats and waxed jackets, with plenty of scarves (which, as you may imagine, more often than not end up dragging) and scuffed boots.

To other people, Ewan often times appears detached, one step away from the here and now: that is because his mindscape brims with half-remembered legends, passed down through generations, its and bits of folklore and odd connections that others might not make. He is fascinated by forgotten stories and tales of yore, and just as engrossed by mythical creatures. You’d probably find Ewan wandering the grounds of the castle - notebook and wizarding camera in hand, ready to document anything that piques his interest. Or perhaps you’ll run into him while he’s looking for sources in the library, or even as he’s chatting up portraits and ghosts for obscure details over a topic or the other. 

Ewan is absent-minded about practical things (whether that be his clothing, or schedules), but he can be very sharp and receptive regarding things that capture his imagination: he’s very clever at piecing together patterns and links, usually thinking laterally and coming up with unconventional solutions.

He may garner a reputation as an ‘eccentric’ and a ‘dreamer’ (leaping from one idea to the other when in conversation; tilting his head slightly and staring off as he gets lost in thought; mumbling to himself when puzzling things out), however he is not to be so heavily underestimated, as he can concoct cleverly devised plans to achieve his goals (sometimes he can disregard rules, or even people’s feelings, if they stand in the way of his curiosity). Ewan is, ultimately, a very ambitious young boy: he wants to uncover secrets no one else has, bring back to the light what has been forgotten, and perhaps discover powerful magic and artifacts along the way.

Ewan is also quite friendly, if a bit odd or socially awkward - preferring one-on-one conversations or small groups where he can freely express himself and rant about his passions. He can even surprise others (and himself) with a sharp wit, which surfaces when you’d least expect it. He has a quirky habit of assigning unusual nicknames to people he meets based on old myths, places or traits he notices.

Ewan was born on the 14th of March in 2013 to Rory MacLeod and Isobel Graham, who had felt blessed by this bundle of joy. The three of them lived in a stone cottage on the outskirts of Portree, in the island of Skye, perched above the harbor with a beautiful view of the sea. Growing up, his mother would tell him stories of kelpies, changelings and selkies: the two bonded over storytelling and Isobel would encourage her son’s wild imagination, while simultaneously getting Ewan accustomed to some aspects of the wizarding world she was apart of, being a witch. Ewan’s relationship with his father was also one of deep affection, albeit a bit different: Rory is a very practical man, and so he’d try to keep Ewan as grounded as possible (he knew that his wife was a witch, however he worried that his son was too caught up in fairytales).
When he was old enough, Ewan attended Muggle primary school. He was the ‘odd kid’ in his class: he daydreamed a lot, drawing doodles of the creatures his mother told him about in the margins of his textbooks. He didn’t excel in the more structured subjects, such as maths, however his teachers found his creativity endearing and tended to encourage his curiosity. Some of his peers would tease him for being spacey and often distracted, but he wasn’t shunned or excluded. Quite the contrary: he was found lovable by his community. When he wasn’t in school, Ewan would spend quite a bit of his time exploring the coastline or nearby hills, looking for ruins or old stone circles, and bringing home ‘treasures’ he’d found (pieces of driftwood, oddly shaped stones, mossy sticks, etc.), a habit he’d hold on to even at Hogwarts.

⎯ First Instance of Magic ⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯

Ewan’s first brush with magic happened when he was eight years old. He and his father had quarreled: Rory, ever the practical man, had dismissed his son’s latest pocketful of trinkets as ‘junk’, urging him to ‘be more serious’ instead. Ewan, not one to argue, had listened quietly, despite being hurt by his father’s words - did he seriously call his son’s hobby a pile of junk? The young boy had slipped out of the house with a heavy heart, and had walked down to the coast. The sky was clouded, as if it reflected Ewan’s mood. There, on the beach, he looked at the stones, feathers, and scraps he’d gathered one last time, before hurling them into the sea with all the force his small arms could muster. He turned to leave, resigned, when he noticed something glinting in the sand just a few feet away. Well, wouldn’t you know it - his trinkets lay neatly before him, as if the sea itself had returned them. Ecstatic, the young MacLeod quickly scooped them up, tucked them close and raced back home to hide them in a special box.

Wood Reducio Wand-quality aspen wood is white and fine-grained, and highly prized by all wand-makers for its stylish resemblance to ivory and its usually outstanding charmwork. The proper owner of the aspen wand is often an accomplished duellist, or destined to be so, for the aspen wand is one of those particularly suited to martial magic. Garrick Ollivander often found that aspen wand owners are generally strong-minded and determined, more likely than most to be attracted by quests and new orders; this is a wand for revolutionaries.

Core Reducio Wands with unicorn hair cores produce the most consistent magic, are least subject to fluctuations and blockages, are most difficult to turn to the Dark Arts, and are the most faithful of wands. However, they do not make the most powerful of wands (unless the wand wood compensates) and are prone to melancholy if mishandled.

Flexibility Reducio The flexibility or rigidity of a wand describes its degree of adaptability and responsiveness to its owner. It reflects how readily and smoothly the wand is capable of adjusting to spells and situations. This trait influences a wand along with its wood, core, length, and the owner's features. It is recognized as a reflection of the bond between wand and owner: a highly flexible one is particularly adaptable, making it ideal for a versatile wizard; conversely, a more rigid wand requires more precision and control. This wand is reasonably pliant.

Length Reducio In Garrick Ollivander's experience, longer wands might suit taller wizards, but they also tend to be drawn to bigger personalities, and those of a more spacious and dramatic style of magic. Neater wands favour more elegant and refined spell-casting. However, no single aspect of wand composition should be considered in isolation of all the others, and the type of wood, the core and the flexibility may either counterbalance or enhance the attributes of the wand’s length. This wand is 30,3 cm long.
