Bonkers
Billy’s face twisted slightly as he pulled the next best book from the shelf. “You don’t actually charm your food, do you?“ he asked cautiously. Olivia gave a small shrug, eyeing the recipe book in his hand with doubt. Charm Your Own Cheese was far from the strangest thing she’d come across in the overcrowded bookshop.
And that wasn’t just about the books - though they were stacked in towering piles and spilling out of the shelves. Wizards of all kinds streamed in and out of the shop, chattering wildly to themselves and seemingly unaware of how ridiculous their clothing looked. Some wore bizarre pointed hats, most were wrapped in long robes, and the colors many of them wore were too loud even for Olivia’s taste. She could’ve sworn she’d seen a tiny wizard with a pointed beard just moments ago, whose cloak was embroidered with animals that seemed to move.
“I don’t think we’re going to find Mum and Dad anytime soon,“ Billy muttered, gesturing broadly at the crowd. Olivia could only nod helplessly.
“Pretty bonkers in here,“ Billy murmured in awe. “Don’t get me wrong - I think you witches and wizards are total freaks. But like... cool freaks.“
Olivia, absentmindedly running her hand along a bookshelf - half intimidated, half enchanted by all the wondrous titles - was just about to say something when her fingers bumped into something. Puzzled, she looked into the shelf, only to find the one empty spot in the entire shop.
She ran her fingers over it again and felt resistance.
“Billy,“ she interrupted her brother’s rambling, “I’m not imagining this, right?“
Billy paused, then promptly tapped the seemingly empty space on the shelf.
“Holy shit,“ he whispered.
His hands began to explore the invisible object, both of them unable to see it. There was something bizarre about the way Billy flailed his hands around aimlessly.
“No wy,“ he said. “I think it’s a book!“
Olivia frowned. As mentioned - far from the strangest thing.
“You think it’s intentional?“ he asked her.
“I think we’ve just uncovered the secret behind Mumy’s failures. That’s all I’m saying,“ she replied dryly, earning a nervous chuckle.
“Bonkers. Bloody hell,“ he murmured, still stunned.
She didn’t say it out loud, but in her mind, Olivia agreed: bonkers indeed.
