A Squeak and a Pom-Pom's Fate
Nova stood outside the absolutely packed Magical Menagerie. The noises were muffled from the outside as she watched two kind faces feed the animals inside. Since the death of her home cat, her parents had decided that she deserved something to help her. Which was the reason she was standing there, Galleons jingling in her small purse.
She took a steadying breath before walking in, the bell ringing cheerfully to announce her arrival. Shooting a polite smile at the old couple at the register, her eyes darted around the welcoming shop. She took a step forward, her first instinct to go towards the cats’ area, where fur balls of all sizes and colors rolled over each other and meowed.
She watched one kitten in particular; bright orange fur and a button nose. She smiled down as it meowed curiously up at her. Despite wanting to reach down and pet its ridiculously small body, Nova moved ahead. She didn’t know why she decided to choose something else, she’d had a cat before. But maybe she wanted change.
She walked over to the Owls, which were hooting quietly. Her eyes landed on a pale white one which was watching the others quietly. It was smaller than the rest, with big and yellow eyes that had a curious glint in them. It hooted at her, and she smiled, reaching a hand up to pet its’ feathers.
It nipped at her fingers gently, not hard enough to hurt but enough to tell Nova to be quick or else. Clearly, animals could have attitudes too. The owl hooted again, giving her a judgmental look. Nova just rolled her eyes at it and moved on, snickering at the absurdity of it.
Her ears perked up at the sound of a young child’s squeal. She turned her head, finding herself watching a kid holding a small, brown rabbit. She couldn’t hear the exchange between the child and, assuming it was a family member, her twin brother. The boy wrinkled his nose at the soft rabbit, seemingly unimpressed.
She was about to turn away when she saw a bright flash of pink fur in the corner of her eyes. She froze, turning to look past the bickering children and into a small enclosure with… colorful balls? She stepped closer, muttering under her breath as she peeked into the small yet spacious area. “What in the world?” They were adorable. Tiny, bright, and fluffy. They squeaked.
She watched them roll around in amazement, reaching down to gently pick one up. She let her hand rest in front of the smallest one. It was a bright shade of purple, sort of lavender, with the cutest eyes she had seen in the whole Menagerie. It rolled onto her hand, squeaking cheerfully.
Nova didn’t know what to say. It was unbelievably soft, like a blanket but tiny. “Aren’t you pretty?” she asked with a small giggle as it rolled in her hand. It was like someone had took a pom-pom and given it life. She smiled down at it before turning around and carrying it gently to the register.
After a quick conversation with the lovely couple there, Nova walked out of the shop carrying her new buddy in a small cage. She peered into it, grinning as the pom-pom squeaked at her. “I’m going to call you Trixie.”
