Broke all my bones that day I found you crying at the lake.
----------------------------
Isabella’s day started badly and just kept getting worse. First, she woke up and fell right out of bed, landing on the floor with a loud thud. Her back hurt, and she was already in a bad mood. While hurrying to get dressed, she hit her toe hard on the dresser. The pain was sharp, and tears came to her eyes. She tried not to cry.

Still, she grabbed her homework and tried to stay hopeful. She had worked hard on it, writing neatly and using ink so it would look nice. But in the busy hallway at school, someone bumped into her. Her backpack fell to the ground, and the ink bottle inside broke open. Ink spilled all over her homework. Even so, she handed it in.

The teacher barely looked at it before saying, “This is unacceptable.” She tossed the paper on her desk like it didn’t matter. Isabella’s face turned red, and her chest felt tight. She had tried so hard, but no one seemed to care.

That night, Isabella didn’t eat dinner. She wasn’t hungry. She couldn’t sleep either. So she put on her red sweater, jeans, and shoes and walked to the Great Lake. She sat by the water, alone. For now, that felt okay.

Olivia’s fingers wandered to her lower lip, tugging gently as her gaze settled on the lone figure by the lake’s edge. She had intended to spend the quiet hour before bedtime on a leisurely walk - hoping to catch the subtle details of the landscape that had eluded her on previous evening strolls.

But soon, the shimmering surface of the Great Lake had captured her attention. For a fleeting moment, she was certain she’d seen some kind of octopus - or something like it - waving at her.

It had been a peaceful moment. The wind had brushed gently across her arms as she watched the play of the waves with a dreamy gaze. Her thoughts had wandered, as they often did lately.
She had thought of her parents - how relieved she had been that they weren’t here, and yet how deeply she missed them. Her mind had conjured images of home: her room, her street, the familiar chorus of everyday sounds. All the things that had once wrapped her in a sense of safety.
Would Hogwarts ever become such a place? So familiar that she could navigate it blindfolded?
“Yes,“ the pragmatic voice within had whispered, “you’ll be here for years. One day, it will feel like home.“
But she hadn’t been as sure as she tried to convince herself.

She had nearly missed the girl in the red sweater, seated quietly by the shore - nearly.

Now Olivia stood still, uncertain. Something about the way she sat, shoulders drawn in, head low, made Olivia pause. Should she approach? No one should sit alone like that, she believed. Yet she didn’t know the girl, and the last thing she wanted was to intrude.

In the end, her conscience won. With determined steps, she approached the hunched figure.
“Hi,“ she said, smiling - hopefully in a friendly way. “Would you like some company?“

Isabella jumped a little. She hadn’t heard anyone coming. Her heart gave a small thump as she quickly wiped her slightly red face with her sleeve and glanced over her shoulder. The sky had turned a soft gray-blue, and the lake was calm - barely moving. She had thought she was alone.

The girl standing there didn’t look angry or annoyed—just curious, maybe even kind. Isabella turned her head back toward the water, unsure of what to say or do. A part of her wanted to be left alone. The other part(the quieter part), was tired of feeling invisible.

She sniffled and hugged her knees closer to her chest. “Sure. I could use a friend.” she said softly, not even sure if she meant it. Her voice cracked a little. She hated how small it sounded.

The silence that followed wasn’t uncomfortable, just... quiet. Peaceful, in a way. Isabella stared out at the lake again. The reflection of the sky rippled across the surface like a painting that hadn’t dried. She let out a breath she didn’t know she’d been holding. Maybe it wasn’t the worst thing in the world - to have someone nearby. Even if she didn’t talk. Even if she was just... there.
