Starting classes again was always a little rough at first, but Landon loved to learn and he wasn't upset about it really. He just had to adjust to having a set schedule again. As it was, Landon was nearly late to his first class of the day, but he made it just on time. He was excited for classes. He loved to learn, especially when it came to historical things. He knew that made him a little bit odd compared to his classmates, but he couldn't help but love history. It was always the same, just needing to be uncovered. Landon hoped that one day he could help uncover it.
Landon slipped into his seat and paid attention to the lesson as it began. He took notes, though he was careful not to write down any of the runes they discussed, even though he itched to do so. He loved the idea of runes and runic magic, the history behind them, and the stories they could tell. He smiled as he learned, happy to see that other students were being productive in class too.
Then the professor gave them an assignment to work together with someone else, and, Landon watched as the students paired up with each other. He looked around and noticed a Slytherin student who hadn't been paired up yet, and he walked toward her hesitantly before setting his things on the table next to her. "Wanna work together?" he asked. When he received an affirmative, they set up a time to meet in the library, and Landon left.
Later, Landon went to the library to wait for Ara to come. He set his supplies on the table and grabbed a book related to their project from the shelves before sitting down and starting to read a little. He loved the library and how peaceful it was... most of the time. There were always some students who liked to cause trouble, but Landon didn't tend to hang out with those ones. He wrote a few notes down as he waited for Ara.

I received permission from Ara to say that Ara agreed to work with Landon. (Please owl/dm her to confirm if needed).

26 August 2025 (10:45pm)Oh look at that, another partner project Ara could smite -- not literally.
It'd been a rather uneventful past few days so far. Being the middle children in Hogwarts wasn't the most entertaining but the girl could manage that -- first stage if dueling was not that far. To her, it seemed that the number of people per year diminished as the years went on. 100 naive first years can turn into 7 depressed seventh years by the end of their journey. It meant that as time flew, people found their people -- if that made sense.
Ara however, stayed in her own bubble. Sure a few friends here and there plus a few older years and a particularly bullyable now-7th year but she didn't exactly have a friend whom she could regularly go to and rant about whatever there is to rant about in life nor was she that friend to another person.
Runes was her next class. Oh boy. It was an interesting subject added to the fact that she excelled at it -- like with most of her classes -- but it lacked that flair that made her want to do anything more for it.
This particular day, they were assigned a project to do by pair. Duos looked at each other with sparkles in their eyes as trios saw their demise while the Slytherin girl read more in their textbook-dictionary. Man, the urge to do this alone was strong -- not that it was particularly hard anyway.
Eventually, someone approached her. It was a Hufflepuff boy (of course it was) who was slightly shorter than herself. "Sure" She replied. The response was plain but who cares at this point? Not her.
The pair agreed on a time to meet in the library.

Ara walked into the library, carrying her books in that casual but purposeful way she always did. The soft thud of her boots against the floor barely echoed before she slipped into the quiet, her eyes already scanning for the familiar mop of brown hair she remembered from earlier.
She didn’t say anything when she reached the table, just set her things down with a quiet thunk and dropped into the chair across from him. No pleasantries, no greeting. Why waste words when he already knew she was there to work?
Her dark brown eyes flicked toward the notes he had already scribbled, and one of her brows arched slightly. “You’ve started?” she asked, tone more curious than judgmental, though it carried that dry edge she almost always had. She pulled her own quill free and flipped open the dictionary-like textbook, fingers turning past the overly ceremonial introduction to the real meat of the runes.
Ara wasn’t about to let someone else carry the weight of her grade, but… she also wasn’t going to complain if he wanted to do more than his fair share.
“So,” she began after a pause, quill tapping against her parchment. “We’ve got to analyze the historical significance of three runic arrays. My guess is the professor expects everyone to pick the same Norse ones and call it a day.”
She tilted her head slightly, strands of dark hair slipping forward before she brushed them back with one hand. “But I’m not wasting my time writing a copy-paste essay of what’s already in the textbook. We can do better.” There was a small glint in her eyes as she leaned forward, tone sharpening into something more conspiratorial.
“We go for the weird ones. The runes no one else wants to touch because they’re harder. Obscure, barely-documented, whatever. That way, no matter what, we stand out.” She leaned back again, arms crossing loosely. “Unless you’re the type that just wants the easy route. In which case, feel free to say so. I don’t bite.”
Her lips tugged upward in something that was not quite a smile, more of a dare. The library around them hummed with quiet activity, pages turning and quills scratching, but Ara’s focus remained squarely on her new partner. She didn’t know him -- didn’t need to know him, really -- but she’d already pegged him as the bookish type. Whether that worked in her favor or not? That was the part that would make this interesting.

Landon looked up as things were set on the table with a quiet thunk. He jumped slightly because he had been absorbed in his book, but he offered her a friendly smile when he realized it was Ara. He didn't know his fellow fourth year well, but he was determined to at least make a good effort to try and have a great outcome from this pairs project. Landon was a hard worker, albeit a bit disorganized, but he really liked runes class so he was happy to work on this assignment.
She didn't greet him, so he hesitated and didn't greet her either. She seemed to be all business, and he wasn't going to push for more than that if he could help it. He didn't want to force the Slytherin to make friends. He knew that some Slytherins weren't the friend making type. His twin sister, for one, only really made 'friends' when they could benefit her in some way. Landon didn't know enough about Ara to be sure of her personality.
"Yeah, I just started by reading and writing a few notes. Nothing special," he said with a small frown. He didn't want to let the pair down by not doing his share of the work. He wasn't the type to make someone else do all the work if he could help it.
His blue eyes locked with Ara's dark ones as she started to talk about what they needed to do and how she wanted to challenge themselves with a harder project. He grinned. Landon wasn't necessarily the most ambitious of people, but he liked to challenge himself when he could. He nodded quickly as she continued to speak, his blue eyes excited. When she asked him if he was the type to want the easy route, he shook his head. "Let's go for the challenge," he said with a grin.
"So if we go for the more challenging ones, we probably need to find other sources than just our textbook," he observed. "I mean, the textbook would have the basics, but... and maybe I haven't read enough of the textbook yet, but I feel like it really only focuses on the more common ones than the obscure ones," he added. He closed the book that he had been reading, which had been about the Norse runes, and straightened up in his chair. "So what kinds of runes are we thinking?" he asked curiously.
