A musical encounter

After a long week of lessons, Elizabeth decided to go practice her piano a little. She had been practicing the piano since she was 7, and she was determined not to stop practicing it during her 7 years at Hogwarts. Before going to the music room, the young girl went through her dormitory to drop off her study materials, change, then she took a small white satchel and put her wand in it and left for the rehearsal room. She walked through all the corridors and arrived at the door, pushed it open, and entered. Elizabeth stopped at the threshold; in front of her was a magnificent piano. She placed her satchel in a corner, then sat down at the piano. Her fingers began to glide over the keys, and a beautiful melody emerged from the piano. Elizabeth wasn't afraid of wrong notes; the more she played, the more she worked on the flaws in her music, so she could improve as much as possible. The young girl hadn't thought to bring her music book, so she worked on a piece of music she knew by heart: Pachelbel's Canon in d. It's one of the melodies she finds most beautiful. It's melodious, slow, and fast at the same time. It's truly beautiful music. Elizabeth could play it for hours.

A musical encounter
Leon had only been wandering down the corridor, no real destination in mind—or at least, that was the excuse he would give if asked. His shoes tapped lightly against the stone floor, carrying him without hurry, until a sound caught his attention. Notes, gentle and steady, spilled faintly from one of the slightly open doors.

He paused, head tilting, as recognition struck. Pachelbel’s Canon in D. His mother had adored that piece, playing it on a piano far too large for their magically-expanded sitting room. Sometimes she played it when she thought Leon wasn’t listening, though he always was. The memory softened his usual quick grin into something more thoughtful.

Curiosity tugged at him, and with a cautious nudge, the door swung wider. Through the gap, Leon spotted a girl at the piano, fingers moving with quiet certainty. He lingered at first, not wanting to intrude, but the moment the melody began to fade he stepped forward.

“That was lovely,” he said quietly, voice carrying a mix of warmth and mischief. With his hands tucked deep into the pockets of his robes, he added, “You play better than my mum—and she’d absolutely hex me if she heard me admit that.”

A smile curved across his lips.
“I didn’t know there was a piano here. Do you come often?”

It was a beautiful Friday afternoon, class had just ended, and I was on my way to my dormitory where I’d deposit my cloak before going to the library to do my homework. I came to my bed and took off my cloak before folding it neatly and setting it down on my bed. Then, I took out my trunk, opened the fastenings, and popped the lid open. From there, I took my cloak and placed it inside of my trunk, before shutting it closed and pushing it back under my bed. From here, I went into the bathroom and took a look at myself in the mirror. My hair looked undisturbed, which was good. My tie however, had seen better days, so I took a moment to adjust it before washing my hands and exiting back to my dormitory, and from there, out of the place and to the library, homework in hand.

As I walked down to the library, going up and down the complex maze of steps which I was still figuring out, I eventually found myself within twenty feet of the rehearsal room. Now normally, I’d keep going down to my destination. Heck, that’s what I should’ve done. But I didn’t. Instead, I decided to take a quick spin on the piano. ‘Just one piece.‘ I told myself. I had a fairly good sense of self-control, so this wouldn’t be a problem whatsoever. I turned and began closing in on the room, at which point I could begin to hear a melody playing. It was a beautiful melody in my opinion, and it was clearly being played by someone who knew how to play the piano. That, or they were more or less a beginner who had learned how to play that piece in particular, but wouldn’t be able to play anything if I gave them a set of notes for some other composition.

Upon hearing more of the melody however, I could tell that the player was going off of a more advanced version of the notes. I knew, because I had played the piece myself, and this was definitely not an easier version of it. With this, I concluded that the pianist was indeed, someone that was learned in the piano, which wasn’t at all surprising given the size and range of students Hogwarts accommodated. As I walked still closer to the room, I finally entered through the door and set my sight upon a short little blonde girl sitting at the piano, her fingers dancing across the keyboard. I meanwhile, found a seat to sit in and listen. I likely wouldn’t play today, not until after I finished my homework, so for now, I simply assumed a sitting position that would allow me to listen until the girl finished, or until I would decide that it is time to leave.

I wasn’t the only onlooker however. There was another boy, who, if I recalled correctly, was a Slytherin, he was definitely a first year like myself and the girl, but the other details about him were not well known to me. I did know that his name started with an L. Leroy I believe it was. No, Leo, or perhaps Leon. No, definitely Leo. Leo Card... definitely not Cardboard. Eh, it didn’t matter too much. I’d figure out his name eventually. Leo himself was a bit on the shorter side as far as kids our age went, and he had messy black hair that could do with some combing. I mention him because when the girl inevitably finished playing, he complimented her, which was one of the proper things to do in such a situation. And I certainly could not disagree with what he said, which was a plus.

The girl herself was a Ravenclaw, this I knew for sure. In fact, I was well aware of her name, courtesy of sharing classes together. Ms. Hamilton, as it was, was a bit on the shorter side as well, and I estimated that she was at least a full head lower than me. In fact, I doubted she even could even reach my shoulders. She had curly blonde hair and light blue eyes, and once she answered Leo’s question, I myself would go on to compliment her. After all, her playing was, as Leo so accurately put it, ‘Lovely’.

A musical encounter
The pure brilliance of the performance was enough to placate the demons in Leon's head. There was no magic in the music, yet it was equally powerful, holding him spellbound to the floor. Leon remained entranced even after the last note faded, as though the silence itself ordered him to linger a moment longer.

His slightly unhinged mind gradually calmed down, and it was only then that he became aware he was not alone. When his eyes finally did scan the room, they landed on another person: a boy.

The skinny boy wasn't a total stranger, yet Leon couldn't quite place where he knew him from. Had he spotted him lurking around the castle corridors? Maybe glimpsed him on the Hogwarts Express? Or—worse—had the boy ever been the target of one of Leon's not-so-harmless pranks? Hopefully not. Either way, Leon had never properly seen him before. That was the curse of having unlimited energy: Leon was always forging forward, too restless to stop and look around.

But this time felt different. Elizabeth’s music had quieted even his stormiest thoughts, and in that calm, Leon found himself open—perhaps even eager—for something new. Maybe this was his chance.

“That was incredible,” Leon said, seizing the moment. He offered a grin, bright and unguarded. “By the way, I’m Leon. Leon Cardasso!”

A musical encounter
Elizabeth was concentrating on the piano piece she was playing, so she didn't notice the two spectators enter the rehearsal room. When she finished her piece, one of the two boys, who was probably a first-year and a Slytherin, congratulated her as he entered the room. He told her the piece was very beautiful and that her mother didn't play it that well. He told her he didn't know there was a piano here and if she came often. The second boy, also a first-year and a Ravenclaw, told her her piece was very well done and he really liked it. Elizabeth smiled and thanked them, then added:

"Thank you very much. I've been working on it for almost three years to perfect it as much as possible. And yes, I come here very often; I try to go every day. Do you play an instrument?"

The young Slytherin repeated that the song was magnificent, then introduced himself. His name was Leon Cardasso. Elizabeth then decided to introduce herself as well.

"My name is Elizabeth Hamilton, I'm a first year in Ravenclaw!"

Then she turned to the Ravenclaw, she had seen him several times in the common room but she had never actually spoken to him.

It turned out that I was wrong about Leo, for his name was not Leo, but Leon. Leon Cardasso as he so conveniently introduced himself. I would remember that. After the boy introduced himself, Elizabeth proceeded to give out a few, good-to-know pieces of information. The first, was that she had been practicing it for nearly three years, an impressive feat, if I said so myself. No wonder it sounded so good. I certainly couldn’t play it that well off of memory alone. No, I would need a note sheet and a few minutes of practice to play the song that well.

The second, was that she came here often, attempting to go every day. It was clear that she either practiced often, or simply enjoyed to play for fun. She also introduced herself, but that was irrelevant to me given that I was already well aware of her identity. At last, it appeared that I had the burden to introduce myself, given that the other two had just done so. “And I am Theodore Ashbourne, Ravenclaw. Pleasure to meet you two.” But that was not it, for Elizabeth had asked a question to the two of us, and it was one that I was fully intending to answer. After all, I enjoyed meeting fellow musicians, and I was sure that given her question, Elizabeth reciprocated that feeling.

“I play a piano. I began learning at age six, so I’ve been playing for nearly half my life. What about you? How long have you been playing for?” The fun thing about musicians was that they came in all shapes and sizes, and you never knew who you were going to get. Some played just a single instrument, like me, whilst others knew how to play more instruments than years I had been alive, and believe me, that was no exaggeration; I really had met people like that. Some played an instrument before they could even walk, and others only got into the craft in their 50s. Some, usually beginners and intermediate students like me, had never composed a piece of music in their entire life, whilst others made a new work every other week. Now that was an exaggeration, but you get the point. However, what was certainly a fact, was that no musicians journey was the same, so was always interested to meet a new one. And Elizabeth, she seemed very interesting indeed, and that was not including Leon who himself could’ve been a musician. Well this was exciting, wasn’t it?

A musical encounter
“My mum tried all sorts of ways to get me into music, you know? She wanted me to learn the piano, just like her, but honestly, I never had the patience for it. Not the piano, not the violin, not the flute, bass, or clarinet either…” Leon let out a small laugh, the kind that comes from remembering a past trouble. He paused for a moment, a crooked smile playing at the corner of his mouth as he thought about the many times his mum looked exasperated, especially after he was ‘politely’ asked to leave another music class. “She was never one to give up easily, but after the third or fourth time, I think even she knew it wasn’t going to work.”

He shrugged, running a hand through his messy hair, eyes glinting with mischief. “Classical music just wasn’t my thing. It felt too slow, too perfect. Then I discovered the drums. That was something else entirely—fast, loud, and completely my own kind of chaos. I found my rhythm there, my little slice of nirvana. And sorry, because honestly, banging on the drums felt way more like me than sitting still with a sheet of music in front of me.”

A musical encounter
Elizabeth nodded at the Ravenclaw's introductions and laughed when the Slytherin told her that her mother wanted him to play an instrument but he couldn't

"- Personally, I've been playing the piano since I was three years old and I also play a little violin, guitar and cello. But I mainly play the piano. If I may say so: what are you doing here? I came to work on my piano because I play less than at home and I have to keep a good level. "

As she spoke, Elizabeth had thrown her long blonde hair back. Usually to play she tied them up but today she hadn't thought about it. She also thinks about why two students were with her. Maybe they came to work on their instrument, well the Ravenclaw because the Slytherin doesn't play it, or maybe they were just passing by.
Elizabeth had gotten up to talk with the two boys, if her father had been there he would have told her to get up because you don't talk to people sitting down if they're standing. For once she listened to him and so she got up to continue their discussion. It wasn't every day that you meet people in a music room.
