PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION

Roderick is a wiry boy, all elbows and knees pointing out to make him appear altogether awkward and stilted when he walks. His hair is usually pulled back to appear well styled into a quiff at the front, however the illusion is ruined by the chaos of mousy brown hair that spills out in every direction from the back, due to his lack of interest in fixing something he can't even see. A long, slightly off centre nose contrasts a small, thin-lipped mouth that appears to have had the skin nibbled off with semi-regularity. Skinny fingers with nails often bitten hang deftly at his sides, his arms skinny with elbows that stick out even when his arms are fully straight. Skinny, but not concerningly so, Roderick's frame gives the illusion of someone that is on their feet for most of the day, burning off any excess amount of food that he eats - that or a good metabolism. 4'7 with Hazel eyes that seem to examine everything in his eyeline, Roderick makes a fairly average impression upon any casual observer.

PERSONALITY

Roderick O'Reilly isn't what most would call an exciting person to be around. He has his moments of wit and humour, although generally he is outstripped in those departments by his peers, but he is unlikely to be someone venerated for his ability to hold a room. This is something that Roderick is acutely aware of, and for the most part encourages. Schoolyard bullying endured for long enough has made him keen on staying out of the limelight, in his mind no first impression is far better than a bad one. He enjoys reading and quiet, but there is a part of him that yearns for something other than the peace of his self-made solitude. A nervous boy, Roderick picks at his fingernails and bites his lips when stressed or anxious - a state of being not uncommon to him, despite his parents best efforts. Light footsteps, carefully measured words and short sentences define his presence in the world as someone who is reserved to observe in it rather than actively partake. And observe he does - on his feet and out of the house more often than not, Roderick finds his peace in people watching, finding immense enjoyment in listening to banter between friends, feeling sympathy for those with frown lines marring their face and compassionately watching the struggles and folly of man. Living vicariously through others as he pictures what he would say in their place, whether he would be angry or amused at practical jokes played on him, how he would respond, whether he'd even recognise it.

BACKGROUND

Roderick was raised in Stockton Heath, a slightly more affluent area of a decidedly not affluent county: Warrington. He was a happy baby, with loving parents and a loving home. Before his schooling began, Roderick would storm into any room and take charge of it with his unbridled joy and luster for life. Such enthusiasm was disliked on the whole by his classmates once he began his schooling, and was subsequently hazed out of him. His parents, Anastasia(Pureblood Witch) and Mitchell (Muggle) despaired of this change, but could find no route to change it, eventually settling on the idea that Hogwarts would be the place to uncork those happy feelings that had been sealed so long ago.

FIRST INSTANCE OF MAGIC

Roderick's first (and only) display of accidental magic came as a form of self-defence. He had been travelling home from school when he was accosted by a group of schoolyard bullies, who had decided to take their act from a vocal level to a physical one. Surrounded and attacked by the lot of them, Roderick panicked - one minute a group of them loomed over him, the next they were all a few yards away, having been dumped onto their backsides. Roderick ran home and explained what had happened to his parents - his Father seemed relieved that he had finally defended himself, but his Mother furiously castigated him for "using magic on those unable to defend themselves or even comprehend such a thing!"

It remains the only time his Mother ever raised her voice to him.
