Postponing a meetup for almost an entire year was wild. Especially for Novalie - someone who usually acted on impulse, chasing whatever idea popped into her head, wild and relentless like a kite in the raging wind and yet somehow, this one thing, this simple meeting, hadn’t just been delayed for a few days or weeks or even months - no. A full, dragging, ridiculous year had passed. Why? The Ravenclaw wasn’t sure either, but just a few days before summer break, she had been enlightened. There has been this dream. Nothing too unusaul really, as her dreams were always vivid, chaotic, and bursting with color. But this one stuck. In it, Edwin - the boy she’d met during her first days at school, the one she occasionally glimpsed at the Gryffindor table or passing in the halls - was there, though not as himself, exactly. He was wearing a massive golden lucky cat costume, waving his oversized paw and repeatedly meowing, 'Nya' with an eerie sort of cheerfulness. No matter where she ran, through twisting alleys or surfing off into a romatic sunset on a bizarre dolphin-squid hybrid, he managed to follow. Always waving. Always nyaning. When she then woke up, the dream clung to her like glitter. It had been a sign. Edwin had reached out to her - psychically, mystically, something like that - through dream space. He had probably been too shy to approach her after all this time in real life, and now his subconscious was nudging hers, saying, come find me. And she would. The day before break, the Ravenclaw had spotted him after class and with swift, silent precision, she had slipped a crumpled note into the pocket of his robe, flashed him a mischievous grin and a wink, then vanished. She didn’t need to explain. The note said enough: 'Meet me in front of Records Papa & Sons in downtown London on 10th July at 2pm. Use the wizard version of Google Maps if you don’t know where it is.' ────୨ৎ──── So, July 10th came and Novalie was late. Horribly, unmistakably, of course she was. She’d overslept entirely, forgotten to ask Malic, her older brother, for a ride the night before and then missed him that morning when he left the apartment. Her mum was at work, and her other two brothers were deep into their fourth hour of battling pixelated zombies on a dusty old console. Asking them for help was pointless, as neither of them had a license anyway, and Liam’s bike had given up the ghost weeks ago. A shame. So there was no way around walking the distance. From her run-down neighborhood, the one she secretly loved even if everyone else couldn’t wait to escape, to the humming, teeming streets of downtown London. It felt like ages, but the redhead didn't really mind. When she finally arrived, it was almost 3 p.m however. She scanned the crowd, squinting into the summer sun. Was Edwin already here? Had he been waiting? If so, Novalie wouldn’t bother to apologize. Being late was just part of the rhythm of life, wasn’t it? A thing that happened to everyone. No need to make a whole big thing out of it, so no sweat. But if the blonde boy wasn’t here yet, Novalie was content to wander a bit. She turned to the shop window. Records Papa & Sons looked exactly as she’d seen online. Slightly aged storefront, tinted glass, and barely a camera in sight. The old record players, or at least they were designed to look old, gleamed like relics from another time, the kind of objects influencers now praised as vintage aesthetic. Apparently, the chain had exploded across Europe thanks to a viral trend, young people rediscovering the charm of analog sound, pretending they’d been born decades earlier than they had. Originally, Novalie had thought about dragging Edwin to an Apple Store or something like that, to introduce him to the world of blinking lights and screens. But then she’d reconsidered. This place was better for starters. And more importantly, rather practical, in a way. Vinyl didn’t mess with magic like most electronics did, or at least Novalie believed so. You didn’t need a digital signal or Wi-Fi to enjoy music when it came spinning off a record, right? And besides.. What was better than music that worked without interference? Free music, of course. Free music that Edwin could take home. And she already had a plan for that. |

The planned London trip had never came over the holidays, nor had any word, so Edwin had for the most part accepted it wouldn't happen. That was okay, it had been a hastility put together plan, so perhaps she had forgotten. It may have been fun to explore London some more, see the muggle world alongside someone raised in it, but as summer quickly approached, Edwin had began to look forward to the idea of a summer of nothingness.
The summer of nothingness did not come. Instead, he had discovered a note slipped into his pocket on one of the final days of term, one that spoke cryptically. "Goo-gel maps," He had whsipered to himself in his dorm, as he read the note. He knew who had sent it, of course, but even then was left confused. He was certain he could find this shop eventually, but he could not for the life of him figure out what this 'Google' was and why it had a map. Over the final couple of days of term, he had been like a man possessed, hunting down any muggleborn he could find, trying to discover the answer. He swiftly learnt google was some sort of 'search engine', but the map specifically was a map of everywhere that all could access - how convinent.
Unfortunately, he wasn't sure what the wizarding equivalent was, and so he would have to do it the old fashioned way. Walking aimlessly until he found his destination.
-----------------------------
Come July 10th, Edwin was awake early, standing infront of his wardrobe with a confused expression. Whilst he vaguely understood muggle fashion, having grown up in London and seeing innumerable muggles walking by, it was a much harder task to figure out what he was to wear so that he could pass as a muggle. When he was younger and was taken into London, his parents had often prepared outfits for him, so he had little experience with planning his own things.
After some deliberation, he settled on a pair of jeans and a plain, dark coloured sweatshirt. It seemed safe, it seemed incredibly normal, which was perfect for a wizard who did not wish to stand out. With that obstacle sorted, Edwin had another ahead of him, finding the store. Try as he might, he had not managed to convince his father to take him on side-along apparation and so he would be left to his own devices, having to navigate the metropolis that is London. Thankfully, he had been given a vague area to head to, and so he set out, far earlier than was likely necessary, intent to find this store.
London was hard to navigate on foot, Edwin quickly realised. It was simply too large for this to be practical, automobiles passed by him, so did these much larger, longer automobiles that seemed filled with people. It would be awfully convinent if he knew how they worked, and where they went, but alas, he was forced to continue on foot.
When Novalie arrived at 3pm, Edwin was not in sight, though he was near, being guided by a rather kind old lady who had recognised how lost Edwin had appeared and had insisted on personally escorting Edwin to his destination, which Edwin had agreed to, having no true concept of stranger danger. Upon rounding the corner, Edwin at long last saw the shop ahead, quickly thanking the lady before speed walking down towards the shop.
"Sorry I'm late!" He said, as he approached Nova. "I don't think wi- I mean, we have a version of Goggle maps. So I've just been walking about, trying to ask people where to go, but.." He shook his hand dismissively, he was here now which was all that mattered, even if it had taken him an annoyingly long time.
"Oh, what are these?" He asked, distractedly, as he peered into the windows towards the Vinyls. "Reckon they've got instruments in there, too? Bet it'd be fun to play one of them." As he spoke, he set off towards the stores interest, assuming she would follow after him.

When Edwin arrived, Novalie had her nose pressed flat against the store window, not just admiring the dusty looking record players displayed at the front but rather peering deeper inside. Beyond the steady stream of customers laughing, talking, and snapping selfies, her green eyes had already caught sight of vinyl records stacked high on the shelves - and, suddenly, even more importantly, in the very back... a row of guitars. Some of them were flashy electric beasts, paired with towering speakers that looked like they could shake the whole street! 'Sorry I’m late!' The boy’s voice snapped her clean out of her daydream, one in which she had, naturally, been blessing an enraptured crowd with her flawless guitar skills, despite never having touched the instrument in her life. She spun to face the Gryffindor. It struck her how strange it was to see Edwin in casual clothes. Not that she often caught him at Hogwarts either, but when she did, it was usually in the uniform robes. This version of him - jeans and a dark coloured sweatshirt - fit him in a way that felt unexpectedly right. Though, Novalie couldn’t help tilting her head to the side at his apology. Why was being late such a crisis for most people anyway? “Nah, don’t worry, I only just got here too.”, the Metamorph waved her hand as if brushing the words away, then grinned brightly, “Wait - you managed to find this place without even knowing where it was? Sick!” She was about to compare him to migratory birds with some mystical built-in compass when he explained he’d simply asked strangers. Novalie nodded quickly, “Oh yeah, I do that too when I get lost! One time, this man even gave me sweets and invited me to see his puppies, like, people around here are so nice, right? But sadly, I had to say no.” The redhead sighed at the memory of what she still considered a tragic missed opportunity, “My bags were already crammed full of buckeyes I collected from the park. I had to bring them back to our hiding spot as soon as possible or my friends would’ve gone mental. We needed them to defend our territory against the kids from the other block. Have you ever been hit with a buckeye straight in the forehead? It’s, like, the worst. But the bruise I got looked a little like a heart, so that was cool, in a way.” Novalie chuckled at the recollection, and when Edwin’s gaze shifted back to the window, she followed it. “These are like, uh... Spotify, but old.”, she explained, gesturing at the records, “You put them on the player, it spins, and music comes out somehow. I’ve never actually tried it myself, but I’ve seen it in movies. I think the wizarding world has something kind of similar, right?” Her eyes flicked back to him, searching his face for confirmation. Even if the records didn’t work with wizard devices, they’d make great decorations. Or maybe - she lit up - improvised hats! Yes!! Self-made record hats. 'Reckon they’ve got instruments in there too?', the blonde boy asked. “Yeah!”, Novalie’s answer was instant as she quickly followed him inside, “I saw electric guitars in the back!” She pointed at them soon enough. A whole line of guitars hung on the wall like trophies, each more eccentric than the last. Posters of long-gone celebrities papered the space around them, and a stack of black amplifiers loomed beside. One young man was already testing out a guitar, fingers pulling electrifying sounds from the strings while chatting with a clerk. “Let’s go there!”, Novalie decided. She reached for Edwin’s hand without hesitation, and if he allowed, she would lead him through the crowd clustered around the vinyl section. Hardly anyone ventured to the back, which baffled her - it was probably the best part of the shop after all! The girl seized the nearest free guitar, a vibrant red thing that practically glowed in her hands. “Oh, man!”, she beamed, before pushing it into Edwin’s arms almost immediately, “Here! You try it first!” |
