Getting my companion at school
Lily was walking through Diagon alley with her parents. She had finished buying all her school books, supplies, wand, and clothes. Her father's side of her family were sorted into Ravenclaw (her mother's side of the family, including her mother, were muggles) and she was almost sure to be too. "No responsible Ravenclaw", she reminded herself, " would ask her parents anything or without a good reason to have it" but what she wanted was a pet, a nice one that would accompany her throughout her school journey, but would not be of any practical use.

"Dad, can I get a pet?", she asked all of a sudden, surprising her parents and even her own self. She had never shown any interest in the community cats or dogs. Many of her friends had adopted them and she had had plenty of opportunities to play with them, but she always refrained from joining them in playing with those animals, clean though they may be.

Her father thought for a second, and finally said, "Ok, you can get a pet, but you must take good care of it". Lily's heart leapt and she said "Thanks dad!". Of course she would take good care of it! She was even willing to spend half her pocket money and savings to keep it comfortable and happy.

She almost ran towards Magical Menagerie, she was so excited to finally get her own pet and couldn't wait to pick the best one she could find. Upon entering the shop, she heard the lively squeaking of mice, sounds of rabbits scurrying around in their cages, the croaks of the toads (who in the world would buy one?), mewing of cats, barks of half crups, and the hisses of snakes. she noticed a ferret in a cage by the corner and, she shivered with fright, a spider. A REAL LIVE SPIDER! she was terrified of them! What was the 'irrational fear of spiders' called? Oh, Arachnophobia (she had read it in a muggle book in the local library of her town).

Anyway, back to business. Which pet should she choose? Certainly not a snake or a spider, she would be too terrified to even look at them, not a goldfish, they were too boring, neither a ferret, half-crup, lizard, rat or a cat. A pygmy puff would be cute but of no use and too expensive anyway, neither would a rabbit be right for her, cute though they were. Then she saw a nice Barred owl in the corner cage and went near it, it was so nice, really useful, and was not too expensive-only 11 galleons and pretty young, only born on 10th April of 2025! She knew at once this was the right pet for her and called it "Preeti".
