As glamorous as the traditional Machavariani estate in Kutaisi, Georgia, could be, even Livia's mother, Natela, sometimes agreed that London was bigger, and for gatherings meant to gain and enhance connections, bigger was often better. Livia did not always understand this—she figured you could actually have a better shot at socially manoeuvring with a smaller number of people than a large crowd, that it was easier to sway one person to your whims than fifty, but any argument from her was quickly stifled when her mother instead told her to get dressed.

By the time Livia had clad herself in a tasteful blue dress of a vintage cut and style, her parents were already ushering her into the large fireplace in their sitting room. Quiet, she followed them, taking note of the fact that her little brother was staying home once again due to his dislike of travelling by Floo. Livia never was sure whether to be concerned for him or disappointed by him. Loving him was a good enough compromise.

Bawdy laughter and refined tittering greeted the three when they arrived in Diagon Alley. The walk to the far-more-posh location of the gala was a quick one, something Livia was glad for because it minimised the time spent in the summer heat, which had been particularly oppressive recently. She refrained from wiping a bead of sweat off of her forehead, instead letting out a small, practiced exhale upon entering the magically-comfortably-temperatured building.

An army of house-elves had ensured that the white-fronted Regency building stood ready to accept myriad members of pure-blood high society. One room was filled with tables clad in pearlescent cloth, vases of baby's breath and roses scattered throughout. Refreshments—ranging from champagne to cucumber water to punch, and still including some hors d'oeuvres—had been clustered together at a long table off to the side of the room. Still another room stood vastly empty, the wooden floor and piano in the corner being the only hint to its intended use as a ballroom. There were plenty of corridors for the intrigued guest to lose themselves in, and even more in hedge maze in the garden out the back door. In the trees outside, glowing orbs glittered against the green of the leaves, a sight that had nearly made Livia smile when she had noticed it.

Her parents were on overdrive. They stood at the entryway, smiles plastered onto their faces, their hands extended as they waited for someone to enter. Etiquette demanded they be ready to greet anyone who might enter, and the same etiquette demanded that Livia, what with her imperfect attempts at a small, graceful smile, slink back and occupy herself with something else. The refreshments hardly interested her; instead, she thought to sit at the piano bench. Her first thought was of her rather musical cousin Evpraksiya, followed by how she could never even hope to live up to such prowess. Such a realisation caused her to stand and leave the room—better not to try than to fail, in this case, especially since a great number of people would soon be arriving.

The creak of the hefty wooden door to the building saved Livia from her confusion. She stifled her natural expression, one that would hint at intrigue, and instead forced the corners of her lips upwards, clasping her hands in front of her. The first groups of people to enter, she hardly recognised, but she did appreciate that they were well-dressed and that they spoke with immaculate vocabulary, as high-class pure-bloods should.

However, they all conversed in English, and each occupant of the room stood at a height far taller than Livia's own, had features sharper, more mature. She lingered, alone, the only child as far as she could see, and as such, she slunk further away, keeping to the corners of the corridors until she ended up outside, staring at the hedge maze, the silvery orb glowing in a tree casting light and shadows across her face. The sun had begun to set, casting orange-tinted allure across the clouds and buildings near this one. Livia was content to stay outside and simply observe, but her gaze kept darting back to the door she had entered the courtyard from. If only her brother had been brave enough to come, or if Evpraksiya had been in attendance, or if someone her age were actually willing to talk to her...
