Potions Class of S.Y 2025-2026

Lyssandra, for lack of a better word, felt like she had been stuck in a trance all throughout her First year in Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry…

Yes, it was a necessity for her to mention the full name of the school to help her ground herself.

No, it was not a cause for alarm nor is there a need for immediate action.

To the young heiress, it just felt like a blur—what with balancing the awe and hecticness of the entire experience. It was not to say that Lyssandra had poor time management skills. It was more so that she felt as if there was far too little time for her to fully comprehend her experience in school. There were so many books she wanted to read, so many halls she wanted to explore, and so many beautiful places that Carolus advised her to visit.

When she mentioned this to her father, Lord Nereus simply chuckled at her dilemma and urged her to pace herself. She was told that her excitement was endearing but she had 7—6 more, now that she was a Second Year—years to fully discover and explore all she wanted while in Hogwarts. Argentus felt the same way when he first started in Durmstrang but told her that she “will eventually lose the spark of curiosity and wonder after a few years within the castle and the castle grounds.”

Though she refused to acknowledge her brother’s claim that she pouted, she was placated with promises of comparing his First Year lessons and curriculum with hers.

Today, down in the dungeons and in the confines of her Potions classroom, Lyssandra made sure that she arrived as early as she could to choose a working station.

A soft yet polite greeting was sent towards her professor who had his eyes on some papers—whether it being homework done by the previous classes or official paperwork, she dared not ask.

She sets her bag by a seat that neither hindered nor became a hazard once they began their work. She took out her necessary protective gear, textbook, and placed a hand on her wand arm where her holstered wand was kept away but still accessible when the need called for it.

There was a purpose to her being early.

Navy blue eyes glanced at the blackboard and towards her professor.

During her First Year, Professor Samuel Sauber left QUITE the impression on her.

Prior to her enrollment into Hogwarts, Potions was a subject that Lyssandra felt neutral towards. Sure, it was necessary—if not a foundation of magic and wizardry—and Lyssandra can respect the art but she only saw it as another class to do well in to be closer to her dreams and aspirations…. Until that fateful lesson.

If there was one word that Lyssandra could use to summarize her entire experience as a First Year in his Potions class, it would be that it was intense.

As discreet as she is able, she looks at Professor Sauber and tries to understand the way the man moves and presents himself.

Professor Samual Sauber, in her opinion, was a strict and a man of discipline. Not only was he the textbook definition of a "no-nonsense" man, the way he teaches his class was something that will forever leave an impression on Lyssandra.

It was one thing to perform the practicality of the potions brewed, it was another to literally burn his skin and then demonstrate the effects of the Burn Healing Paste.

Lyssandra blinks the memory away in favor of coming into a decision.

She takes a look at her station, nodding when she confirms that all her necessities are ready for class, she steps away from her chosen spot and quietly steels her resolve.

“Pardon me, Professor Sauber,” Even if her professor was not looking in her direction, she offers him a small but polite curtsy.

“May I be permitted… to make an inquiry?” Lyssandra internally released the breath she unknowingly held as she awaits the Professor’s permission.

POTIONS ROOM
─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
The potions classroom was cold, dim, and sterile in the early morning, just the way Samuel preferred it when the students were nowhere in sight. His morning had begun the way most of them usually did: long before the castle roused itself.

A run along the forest’s edge, followed by an hour with the weights he had privately acquired and found a place for, in his private quarters. What followed was a cold rinse and a quick check on the series of prototype potions he'd locked away behind two layers of wards. Some potions were too volatile or too personal to be left to idle curiosity; student or otherwise.

By early morning, Samuel Reinhard Sauber was seated behind his desk in the Potions classroom, dressed in a crisp navy shirt and black trousers, the sleeves rolled just enough to expose the taut musculature of his forearms. His gunmetal wristwatch ticked softly under the light of a hanging torch. His round sunglasses, ever-present, veiled the distinctive and uncomfortable hue of his crimson irises from the world. Though they never hindered his ability to observe his surroundings.

They never had.

He was reading a comparative essay on the properties of powdered bicorn horn when the sound of measured footsteps alerted him to an early arrival.

He didn’t look up, he didn't need to.

The identity of the student didn’t concern him at first, many of them arrived early these days, and not always for noblest of reasons. Extra credit requests. Sob stories, and the occasional attempt at sycophantic small talk. He’d learned to treat them like background noise until they made themselves relevant.

Still, he was in the habit of catching the details of all those who arrived, simply an inherent part of his nature.

Footsteps controlled. Bag set down with care. A noticeable pause as protective gear and materials were set in their correct order. Not many second-years showed that kind of attention.

This was Interesting.

It wasn’t until the student approached that Samuel turned the page, finished annotating a margin in, and let his quill hover just above the parchment.

"Pardon me, Professor Sauber."

He didn’t look up immediately. He’d already recognized the voice, it belonged to one 'Miss Lyssandra Navarus'. Seemed polished, mannered and excessively formal in a way that spoke of structured upbringing rather than affectation.

"May I be permitted… to make an inquiry?"

Now he looked up.

The girl had composure, slightly better than the average chit chatter then.

"Good morning, Miss Navarus," Samuel said as he motioned with one hand, a simple gesture that implied permission. "Please proceed with your inquiry."

For his own sake, he hoped her query was one grounded in logic, legal within the walls of Hogwarts, and utterly devoid of adolescent dramatics he had no energy to deal with so early in the day.

Still, her tone this morning gave him pause. Whatever she was building up to, it did not seem to be idle chatter.

He tapped a knuckle softly on the edge of his desk. "Miss Navarus, if you’re preparing to ask for assistance brewing something you are not authorized to touch, I will stop you preemptively."
There was no threat in his voice. No raised volume. Just a soft, mechanical certainty that was his second nature.

"If, however," he continued, "you have a genuine academic query, I suggest you phrase it precisely. Half-formed hypotheticals, do not help either of us as much as a precise phrase would allow me to pinpoint your query."

A pause.

She arrived early which implied initiative or perhaps she had an agenda. Samuel was willing to tolerate the former. He gave her the minutest of smile as his expression softened, he did set his quill down, both hands now flat on the parchment in front of him as he gave her his full attention.

He was hoping she'd make it worth this interruption.

"Good morning, Miss Navarus," Samuel said as he motioned with one hand, a simple gesture that implied permission. "Please proceed with your inquiry."

Lyssandra felt the tension in her shoulders ease. Considering her professor’s response, she was glad that she chose to be early and found the opportunity wherein Professor Sauber was relatively free.

She eyed him carefully.
He tapped a knuckle softly on the edge of his desk. "Miss Navarus, if you’re preparing to ask for assistance brewing something you are not authorized to touch, I will stop you preemptively."

Lyssandra gave a minute reaction, just a small shake of her head at the notion of brewing something illegal or even something beyond her knowledge and/or capacity.
"If, however,"

She perked up,
"you have a genuine academic query, I suggest you phrase it precisely. Half-formed hypotheticals, do not help either of us as much as a precise phrase would allow me to pinpoint your query."

Lyssandra nodded, this time a clear action to convey that that was her intent in the first place.

“Of course, Professor.” She quietly took a breath and allowed the question that she had been wanting to ask since their very first Potions class.

“This is by no means a slight to your teaching methods nor to your abilities, professor,” She made sure she had that clear.

“I just wanted to ask what made you teach the way that you do—have, even. I dared not make assumptions, it was just that it was quite unorthodox yet somehow so effective that it made me wonder what made that choice.”

Again, the memory of reddened skin that was then soothed by the Burn Healing Paste was brought to the forefront of her mind that one need not be a skilled Legilimens to see what she was thinking of.

Was the reason strategic? Was it historical—that is, did some past experience shape this form of teaching? Was it simply a personal choice? There were possible other reasons but Lyssandra would wave such thoughts away and had waited till she returned to Hogwarts as a Second Year to hear the answer from the man himself.

“I dared not make any assumptions, Professor. I was hoping to hear from your words alone and perhaps gain some new insight.” Lyssandra held her left hand and made her thumb run along the thin and raised skin of her palm, it was a behaviour that she heard her tutors notice whenever she was deep in thought or nervous.

She tries to break it from time to time but there will always be moments when the situation gets the best of her that she can’t help but fall back to step one.
