Physical Description

Atticus has warm, olive-toned skin and dark hair, which is often cut short on the sides but slightly longer on top. He likes to keep his hair neat and carries a comb in his pocket to fix any loose strands—a habit he learned from his father. His deep hazel eyes are framed by thick, straight eyebrows, giving him a serious expression even when he is relaxed.

At twelve years old, Atticus is on the taller side for his age, standing about 5 feet 5 inches. He has broad shoulders and a sturdy, solid build, which makes him look older than he is.

Family Background

Atticus was born into the Maxfield family on January 2, 2013, in Yonkers, New York. He comes from a relatively large family that includes three brothers and two sisters. His nine-year-old brothers—Harlow, Bowie, and Orion—are triplets, while his four-year-old sisters, Scarlett and Ava, are twins. This trend of twinning runs in his family, as both of his parents are twins, and their parents were also twins, continuing the pattern through generations. His family considers this a Maxfield tradition. Atticus often jokes, “Everything comes better in twos… or threes,” although he himself was not born a twin.

His parents, Adler Maxfield and Reign Callahan-Maxfield, have very different careers. In contrast, his mother is patient and soft-spoken. Her gentle voice and kind eyes make everyone feel at ease. She possesses extensive knowledge of potions and herbs, with neatly labeled jars and vials filling the shelves and medicine boxes in their home. Because of her, they never run out of flu medicine. Atticus describes her as the rock of the family. While his father teaches them discipline and strength, his mother emphasizes empathy, creativity, and the importance of caring for others.

First Instance of Magic

Atticus experienced his first encounter with magic when he was five years old. He had been surrounded by plants since the day he was born because his mother worked as a herbalist and apothecary. Spending a lot of time by her side, Atticus learned about the different plants in their home garden. One day, his mother encouraged him to grow a plant on his own using the methods she had taught him. Atticus decided to grow peppermint because he loved its fragrance and enjoyed having it in his tea.

Day after day, he eagerly checked his garden pot, but after two weeks, nothing appeared. Naturally, Atticus felt upset about what he saw as a failure and began to cry. His mother comforted him, saying, “Even the best gardeners have their failures.” As Atticus sobbed, his tears fell into the pot, and then something extraordinary happened: a small stem began to grow slowly out of the soil. His mother gasped, noticing the change.

“Look! Your plant! Your tears made it grow!” she exclaimed.

Atticus wiped the tears from his eyes and looked back at the pot, gasping in amazement as well.

“I grew my first plant!”
