@Oonagh Brown

Silas was grumpy. This wasn’t new — he’d been sulking for the past week as he packed his few things and had to finally face the reality that he was leaving. He’d tried to run away more than once as a kid and generally aimed to spend as much time as possible out of the house, but now that everything was coming to an end for at least several months, he wasn’t so sure of what he wanted anymore. It wasn’t that he’d miss his dad, although they had had some decent moments semi-recently. No, it was more that he had to leave everything else that he knew behind. He was going to a different country, without anyone he knew, apparently without the internet or phones, to go to a fucking boarding school. No more seeing his friends. No more YouTube, no more video games, no more blasting music in his headphones. No more autonomy. No more roaming the city he had grown so used to. And what did he have in place of all that? Not much.

While anyone raised as a Muggle would surely experience culture shock in this scenario, most kids were excited to learn that magic was real. Silas? Not so much. That revelation for him, finally confirmed by his dad and his Hogwarts letter, was paired with being told that magic was what had killed his mother. How the fuck was he meant to want to go to Hogwarts after that, especially considering everything else he would lose? But he had no say in the matter — his dad had told him that he would be going, and that was the end of it.

He couldn’t even fucking see me off, Silas thought bitterly. Because today, September 1st, was a fucking Monday and that meant his dad had fucking work, so here he fucking was, having to drag himself and his fucking bags to King’s Cross alone. He didn’t understand why he had to spend three hours going in the wrong direction just to get on another train to go north again. This was going to be a long day. He stared blankly at the letter that was getting worn from the amount of unfolding and refolding and general fiddling he had been doing. Do these idiots not even understand how numbers work? You can’t have a “Platform 9 3/4”. He rolled his eyes and stared out the window of the train, chin resting on his hand glumly. His eyes began drifting shut, so he shuffled upright more in his seat to try to keep himself awake. He hadn’t got much sleep last night and he had had to leave before 8 this morning if he wanted to make it on time.

Although… if he didn’t get there on time, maybe he wouldn’t have to go to this weirdo school after all… No, no, he couldn’t do that, he didn’t want to have to deal with his dad’s reaction when he would find out Silas was back. Maybe Silas could just run away? Start a new life? He sighed. This was stupid, it was all so, so stupid — he didn’t want to go. But finally, he was at King’s Cross, standing near Platform 9. Was this a joke? He was supposed to run into a wall? That made him just a liiiiittle bit sceptical, to say the least. He lingered nearby, waiting for someone else to come do it. He didn’t have to wait too long before a family came by with big trunks and what seemed to be an owl in a cage. After glancing around, they headed for the barrier with confidence, and one by one, they were gone. Well, that had looked easy enough… Here goes nothing.

He closed his eyes at the last second as he headed straight for it, slowly opening them again when he realised he hadn’t died or made a massive fool of himself (yet). He walked away from the barrier so that no one else would bump into him, and while he probably should have started to feel at least a bit of excitement by this point, instead he just felt utterly alone. His eyes took in the new platform and the train with “Hogwarts” in its name — guess he had made it to the right place — and then scanned the crowd assembled here. How did so many people have their family members with them? It was a Monday. Silas wondered if his dad would have come even if he hadn’t had work. Probably not.

All the happy faces irritated him. What was there to be excited about? He made his way through groups of people who were hugging and waving, a scowl on his face as he pushed someone out of his way in order to board the train. As much as he didn’t want to get onto it — because that meant that he was actually going to Hogwarts — it was better than just looking at all of that out there. He sighed. Goodbye, freedom… But his self-pitying moment was soon rudely interrupted by someone roughly shoving him from behind. He spun around to face her, his bags accidentally (although he definitely didn’t mind that) hitting her in the process as she made her way to the side of him and then in front. “Oi, watch it! Hey, what the fuck was that for?” He tried to kick at the back of her legs or feet, but she was slightly too far away for him to reach.

There was something about her way to the station that made her feel unbelievably angry. She had already spent a lot of her free summer time at the camp like she had done last year. Which meant that this would already be the third time this year that she had to take such a long car trip from Stirling to London and once back after the summer camp had concluded.

In her first year that week between the end of camp and the start of school had been filled with a week-long ‘vacation’ in some boring old bed and breakfast that had her going insane. However this week her dad had not been able to get an approved vacation during that time and thus there was a lot of back and forth driving. And while Oonagh usually enjoyed long car trips and blasting music in her headphones until her ears rang, there were limits to how much boredom she could fend off. Especially knowing that she was not going to get much sleep on the road and would drive all night just to be stuck in a weird train that would practically take the same way back. She had heard her dad mutter about that while he was getting ready to drive her. Apparently the post stamps she had used the last year to send her parents letters had hinted at a location about a three hour drive away, but she was required to start in London regardless which she knew meant that even if they left at 10 pm after watching an after dinner movie together with her dad and mum, she would not arrive in London before the first sunlight broke through the thick blanket of gloomy clouds the UK was known for.

She was sitting on a bench in front of the King's Cross Station, where her dad had dropped her off about ten minutes ago. She had dragged her luggage onto the space of the bench next to her, effectively blocking anyone else with the desire to sit down from doing so. Her dad had offered to walk her to the station but she had insisted that she was able to get there on her own and could carry her own luggage. So he had given her a tight hug, almost suffocating her that lingered a few moments too long, making it almost an embarrassing endeavor and exactly the reason why she was glad they were still in front of the station rather than at platform 9 3⁄4.

She had also received her allowance which her parents had put in an envelope, money which had accumulated over the last month. Technically two months of vacation but the other portion of the money she had brought to the summer camp. However it was still quite a sum of money, more so than her pocket money she got in exchange for doing chores around the farm and helping out. Though that would not get her far in the other world. So now she had to carry this fairly heavy envelope filled with the golden and silver coins called galleons and sickles. It was fairly heavy for just some money. She was sure she could give someone a concussion if she threw it at their head hard enough…

She gave a huge yawn and stretch, pushing her arms skyward as her jaw almost unhinged. It was time for her to board the train, otherwise she might miss it. She heaved her luggage onto a trolley her dad had organized for her, before he had to leave. Something about grabbing coffee and needing to catch a meeting. It had been so boring that she had zoned out. She wished she would have had her phone for that last hour but her dad brought it back home with him, so she was stuck without music that might as well be loud enough to burst some more sensitive person’s ear drums.

She hated that she had to leave all that behind. While she had found some solace in Quidditch and causing trouble, there was also a huge aspect of isolation and giving up the life she was familiar with, whenever she stepped through that wall and left normalcy behind in exchange for a sub par experience of the magical world. The platform felt like a gate to isolation and she approached it with a frown and some lingering anger at not being able to stay home. At having to spend yet another year at that school where she was an outcast. Well, she had been an outcast previously too, but at the very least they had all been somewhat normal human beings, learning the same boring, old subjects. Now she had to break her head over Charms, which she had not yet figured out, or worse, Astronomy. Why would she care about the alignment of stars?

She pushed past the cheerful and teary-eyed families and boarded the train, her sour expression remaining plastered all over her face.

She had found herself a compartment in one of the less filled carriages towards the back of the train, where most people would not bother walking to, or so she hoped. At least that would have been her plan and it had worked well enough last year too, so why not try this again?

However it did not take long until her stomach started rumbling angrily, demanding some kind of nourishment or food. Which she figured made enough sense, considering it was now about 11am and she hadn’t had food since last night’s late dinner and some crisps she had packed for the long car ride. Now she sat there, having heaved her luggage and travel bags into one of the baggage holder areas for the compartment she had chosen, slowly starving. Which is when she remembered the food trolley from the previous year, causing her eyes to narrow at the closed compartment doors. She was not sure if the snack trolley would be available yet, since the train was still standing still, but determination and hangriness ruled her now as she grabbed the envelope with money from the little table and headed through the carriage aisle towards the front of the train.

She had no patience for the boy walking her way, hauling bags in both hands and instead chose to roughly shove past him on her quest for food. However he did not seem to like this rough treatment and called out to her, when it was his bags that hit her when he moved about, causing her to snap around and glare daggers at him. Her blonde curls, unkempt this morning and even more unruly due to the car trip and awkward sleeping positions with her head leaning against the rumbling car window, exploding around her face, strands falling into her eyes at the sudden motion.

Ye watch it,” she bit back, catching that he had tried to kick her. ”Or A’ll kick ye an A will actually hit!”. Oonagh was in no mood for pleasantries at this moment and she would gladly punch his face if he did no stop being so annoying. She was ready to shove him down the aisle at the very least if he dared not back down, narrowing her eyes at the boy.

What was this girl’s fucking problem? Silas hadn’t even done anything — he hadn’t even been moving slowly — and yet she had shoved him for no reason and was now acting like it was his fault. What the fuck? Well, it seemed like his magical journey was off to a great start. He really didn’t need to be dealing with this on top of everything else. He just couldn’t catch a break… why did simply boarding the train have to turn into a fight when he hadn’t even been the person trying to start one this time?

The girl looked a little mental with her wild curls and glare — it seemed she was a ticking time bomb. Nevertheless, Silas glared right back, unflinchingly looking her in the eyes with equal hostility. He hadn’t been the one to start the fight, but he sure as hell wasn’t going to just stand here and be insulted like this. I should watch it? The fuck did I do? You’re the one who shoved me for no fuckin’ reason!” “Or A’ll kick ye an A will actually hit!” “Oh, will ya? Sorry, I’ll make sure t’ hit you next time,” he responded mockingly and rolled his eyes. “Now, could I perhaps interest you in fucking off or do ya ‘ave nothin’ better to do?” Still holding the bags, he lifted one hand slightly to show her a raised middle finger.

Oonagh sized down the boy standing in front of her, stuffing the envelope roughly into her coat pocket, to free the space in her hands. Causing the envelope to still stick out halfway as she paid no mind and instead glared at the miscreant in front of her.

”Ye can hardly call that shovin’ since ye stood in the ####ing way,” she argued and rolled her eyes in an overly dramatic fashion, as she brought up a hand to brush her loose curls of hair out of her face, so that she could see properly where she had to land the hit.

“Now, could I perhaps interest you in fucking off or do ya ‘ave nothin’ better to do?” the boy retorted to her and Oonagh gave him a smug look. ”Nah. A gotta return the favour of the kick first,” she said casually, almost nonchalant with a smirk, raised her foot and aimed a kick at his legs.

Her boot hit his thigh and she gave him a self-satisfied look over, pushing an arm against her hip, feeling quite confident. A little fight in the corridor was just what she needed to wake her up and make her feel energised in the morning despite the long car drive and the upcoming all day train journey.

His attention was immediately drawn to the movement of her hand and his gaze rested for a moment on the envelope poking out of her pocket, quietly storing that information away as he listened to whatever bullshit she was spewing now. “How the fuck was I in your way? Are you so large you can’t get past without fully shoving me? What are you even doing here without bags, anyway? Just taking a stroll? Looking for people to shove and then blame? How about you return to wherever your bags are so that you’ll no longer have people ‘in the fucking way’?”

Her expression in response to his comment about “fucking off” could only be described as smug. Of course, Silas hadn’t expected her to just stop and leave, but it did reflect what might be about to come. Maybe he should have been wary, but he wasn’t particularly bothered, not even when she said she needed to “return the favour of the kick”. “I didn’t even actually kick you; you’re fucking mental.” Never mind the fact that, had their roles been reversed, he probably would have more or less done the exact same things she was doing…

She landed the kick and he looked her dead in the eye, unamused. “Congratulations. Are you happy now? Got it all out of your system? Great, goodbye.” He rolled his eyes. “Fuckin’ tosser,” he muttered as he pushed past her, attempting to snatch the envelope on the way. Except… things did not go as planned. He had the envelope pinned neatly between his fingers, but as he tried to continue on his merry way, he felt resistance — something was keeping him trapped. He glanced down and saw that the chains hanging from his trousers had got caught on one of the buttons of the girl’s pockets. Are you fucking kidding me?? Shit… He quickly began trying to detach himself. Well, this was about to be awkward.

Oonagh's glare intensified as her eyes narrowed at the boy. Her hand still firmly placed at her hip once her foot lowered after her kick. "How about you return to wherever your bags are so that you’ll no longer have people ‘in the fucking way’?" was the part she most focused on as the rest was already in the past after so much blabbing of unimportant details. "A have na reason tae explain shit tae ye, but A 'm needin' some scran," Oonagh huffed. She was hungry and wanted food. "Or if ye have some food A'd tak' that as well, A am no' that picky," she quipped back confidently. Was getting to the stupid cart with food and snacks really that much of an ask?

However when he threw a hissy fit over her kick she rolled her eyes at him. "Dinnae act innocent, like ye weren't about tae kick me too," she threw back immediately. But then he tried to push past her and part of her considered giving him a shove on the way for good luck because he had truly proven to be an idiot, but she did not even get that far, when she felt a rough tug and glanced down and noticed one of his chains and the button of her coat pocket. Immediately her head flew up and glared at him.

"Yer must be aff yer heid! Are ye that desperate to get skelped, eejit?!" she snapped when she pieced together what had happened. He got caught on her coat - that bampot, with his hand still holding on to her envelope. So her reaction was almost immediate, pushing him back against the door and grabbing for his wrist that was holding the envelope, squeezing it, to incentivize him to drop it and drop it fast as she glared. "You’re up a pure dafty, if ye think ye can get away wi takin somethin from me," she stepped closer and held her other hand beneath his hand holding the envelope, so that he may drop it if her grip caused him to let go.

Well and if he did not, she now was close enough to whack her head against his face, which as she had been told many times, would hurt a bunch. She wanted her envelope back. Not because she particularly was attached to the money within it, but because it was what stood between her and finally having some delicious food to feast on as the next meal otherwise would be the Welcome Feast in the evening and only after the students were sorted. What a bummer.

She explained that she needed some food, and he immediately responded, “Not me fuckin’ problem.” She proceeded to say that she’d take his food instead if he had any. “Why the fuck would I give ya anythin’?” He shook his head. “Ya were so desperate that ya ‘ad to fuckin’ shove me, but now you’re wastin’ yer time talkin’ to me? Do one and go ge’ yer fuckin’ scran, then.1 Had he been talking to her the entire time, which was possibly stopping her from leaving? Yeah. Had he still told her to fuck off already, multiple times? Also yeah. So if she was so desperate to get food, why was she still here?

“Dinnae act innocent, like ye weren't about tae kick me too.” Okay, fair enough. “I didn’, though, did I?” It was a meaningless response, really. Trying and failing to kick her didn’t mean that he hadn’t tried at all, but in his view he was innocent enough, since technically he hadn’t kicked her. He most certainly wasn’t innocent of what happened next, though. A stream of curses ran through his head; he had to have had the actual worst luck ever for this to happen. He detached the chains from her button startlingly quickly — it was far from the first time they had caught on something; he was quite practised at how to find the right angles to pull them away without wasting much time struggling. However, it still wasn’t fast enough; he hadn’t noticed that they were caught until he tried to move away, so both children had already felt the tug.

“Yer must be aff yer heid! Are ye that desperate to get skelped, eejit?!” she yelled at him. He just shrugged. Maybe he was. She pushed him against the nearest compartment door with a thump. He couldn’t help it, his eyes shone with mirth and he smirked slightly despite the current situation being objectively bad for him. It was just entertaining to watch how people reacted when pushed. Angering her hadn’t been his intention — he had simply seen something he could easily take and couldn’t resist the urge to try — but he certainly didn’t mind that outcome.

He did, however, mind it just a little when she squeezed his wrist so hard he felt like something was going to break. He reacted instinctively and dropped the envelope immediately. “Ow, fuck. Okay, okay, I ge’ it…” He pulled his hand away from her hard, trying to match the strength of her grip in order to free himself, but right at that moment, she happened to let go, resulting in his hand smacking against the door behind him. He winced and shook his hand from side to side briefly before his other hand lifted to massage it slightly, his bags shifting around him as he did so. But the force of all the movements had ended up dislodging his train ticket from his pocket, and the bags were the final blow, sending it fluttering to the ground beside him.

1 Go away and go get your f—ing food, then.

“Not me fuckin’ problem.” The immediate response and actually fair enough, but not good enough. Oonagh would make it his problem, if she did not get to grab some food soon. Because she had not eaten and it made her grumpy, well.. grumpier than she would usually already be. “Why the fuck would I give ya anythin’?” Oonagh laughed. "Ah didnae ask ye tae share, noo did ah? So keep yer heid," she almost laughed at him but also was still bubbling with annoyance and excessive anger. She enjoyed a good argument however, however the other boy struck her as quite obnoxious.

"Do one and go ge’ yer fuckin’ scran, then." He said and now Oonagh huffed. "Well, mebbe Ah would have but ye mak a better door than a windae”. She was kind of grasping at straws now, since he had already said that she could have simply waited for him to pass through the carriage's entry frame before pushing past him. But who had the patience for that? However she was fully convinced that somehow it was his fault for standing in the door frame when she had wanted to pass through there. It is not her fault that he was hauling bags with him which caused him to took up even more space, that was fully up to him. Once more ignoring the irony that their roles could have been reversed if she had been dragging her bags through the carriage's corridor and likely would have started the very same fight with different arguments.

“I didn’, though, did I?” he dared to claim causing her to snap and consider giving him just another kick for good measure. "D'ye want tae get hit so bad? Ye tried an ye ken it," she huffed. Perhaps instead of a kick she should hit him next time to check if he had a brain or if his head sounded hollow. She made a mental note for that in case she had to check that at a later point. For now she just wanted to run off and get her food.

He claimed to have received the message once he pulled his hand back - stupidly, as she had also let it go in that moment - causing it to whack against the wall behind him. "Awa ye skedaddle noo, A am off tae buy some snashters," she huffed, before turning to leave the carriage [unless stopped]. She really was craving some food now and after this argument even more so than before. Getting the envelope back from him had turned out to be a rather easy task, so he mustn't be that strong to fend off after all. At least when compared to her, she was quite amazing when it came to strength which was why no matter how she interacted with Pax she was sure the Beater position was secured for her this year as well.

She laughed at him when he asked why he’d give her anything — it had been mostly rhetorical, but she did answer, saying that she hadn’t asked him to share. She kind of had, though, when she had said that she’d take food if he had it as well. Whatever. If she didn’t understand what he was saying, then she probably wouldn’t even if he pointed out the connection between what she had said and what he had said. He ended up just rolling his eyes, particularly when she was saying “keep yer heid”. Yeah, yeah.

When he told her again to leave she just huffed, claiming that she would have if he wasn’t still in the way. “You’re plen’y free to go whenever, I believe in yer abili’y ter get pas’,” he replied mockingly. Apparently, pointing out that he didn’t actually manage to kick her only angered her further and she more or less threatened to hit him. Had her kick not been enough? “‘Ey, I’m jus’ sayin’. No need to ge’ yer knickers in a twis’.” But yes, he had indeed tried to kick her, and though he tried to suppress the smirk, a corner of his mouth still curled upwards as he looked at her expression and considered her words.

Then, she declared that she was leaving to buy something — she had been griping about being hungry, so it made sense. Finally,” he responded and watched her leave, collecting himself and checking that he had everything with him. He made it a few steps before realising that he didn’t have his ticket, feeling around in his pockets and then finding it on the ground. He sighed, picked it up again, and continued on his way. What a fantastic fucking first interaction that had been. But, honestly, despite getting shoved, kicked, pushed against a door, and injuring his hand, he hadn’t truly minded it, not really. The girl had been tough and able to deal with him, and the fighting had brought him a bit of a sense of normalcy that he wasn’t opposed to.

He began searching for an open compartment, passing many that were full. To his understanding, there were still a few minutes before the train would depart, but most people seemed to be starting to settle down by now. He soon managed to find one that appeared to be empty and he slid in, shuffling over to the window and arranging his bags around him — on his lap, and tucked under his legs with his feet pressing against it reassuringly. He didn’t truly believe that a private train full of schoolchildren would be a place where his bags would be stolen, but it was just habit, especially after making the multi-hour trip — involving multiple transfers — between two very busy cities by himself. However, this meant that he didn’t notice the luggage that was already stored away in the racks overhead. Exhausted after a busy morning, he leaned his head against the window, his eyes drifting shut. He wasn’t asleep, but he wasn’t paying attention to people passing by the compartment. At least, not until the door was opened again.

Once Oonagh had actually stepped away from the altercation, her original goal back at the forefront of her mind, the show of anger and exasperation had left her body almost immediately. Of course the thieving attempt had left her mildly annoyed but the guy had such awful luck she had to find some amusement in the situation! So instead of letting it occupy her mind further she was scurrying down the aisles of carriage after carriage until she spotted what she considered to be her savior in this moment - some guy in that weird wizard fashion pushing a trolley through the aisles, dodging children and heading straight toward Oonagh. Almost as if the food had heard the silent growling of her stomach. Her speed of steps increased, causing the loose coins in the crumpled up envelope that she now held safely in her fist instead, to jingle as they shook.

"Whit a sicht for sair een!"1 she exclaimed, running over to the trolley and kicking a luggage out of the way and into a nearby compartment, shouting a quick "Yer welcome!" before placing both of her hands onto the cart and leaning over it to examine which treats were on sale. Effectively blocking the poor lad from moving the trolley along the aisle as she was now blocking the way of it.

As to be expected there were countless candies, snacks and otherwise desirable treats on display. Oonagh kept rudely standing in front of the trolley so it could not be pushed away, as she took the envelope and emptied its content onto the food tray and began counting them. Ignoring any sort of reaction the person pushing the trolley might have had. She counted exactly twelve galleons and 10 sickles and began looking through the options of food, grabbing for two sandwiches with salad, ham and cheese as well as various candies.

By the end she paid almost all her money, and ended up with the two sandwiches, a scotch pie, some oatcakes with a dip and as for the sweet side of things she had acquired some sticky caramels, a cupcake, some licorice, jelly slugs and a handful of chocoballs. She was left with a few sickles and knuts, pushing them into her pocket and discarding the envelope as it no longer had much use. She stacked her 'harvest' of candies and treats across her arms and began making her way back to the compartment she had abandoned earlier on her quest to find the food trolley.

Had she overdone it? Perhaps. But at the very least she would not go hungry at the grand dinner event this time, or during the train ride. As she approached her compartment, her view was slightly blocked from the bags of treats and whatnot, so at first glance she did not actually see that there was now someone who was going to be accompanying her during this long train ride - oh joy. But using her feet and elbow in unison, she managed to roughly push open the compartment doors, muttering under her breath in annoyance at it being so difficult to open without her hands being free until she finally managed to roughly shove the door open with a kick of her foot after managing to open it up to a small gap and squeezing her boot in between.

"####ing finally," she muttered before unceremoniously opening her arms and letting her food haul topple across the small table in the middle of the compartment. Now without her purchase blocking her view, she was greeted with the view of the guy from earlier. "Ye oot tae be kidding me..."2 she said out loud, staring at the boy. What was he doing in her compartment? She crossed her arms across her chest and leaned against the entrance of the compartment, her eyes narrowing so that she ended up glaring at the intruder.
1 "What a sight for sore eyes"
2 "You ought to be kidding me"
