Elizabeth flipped her hair over her shoulders, desperately wanting to run from there. Up until now, she hadn’t even known about Julia until they’d been reached out to with an invitation for her wedding. Elizabeth’s mom covered Elizabeth’s hands and looked at her sternly before uncovering them. That was barely enough for her to behave.
She was grateful that it was a small event in the backyard of Julia and her fiancé Allen’s house. At least it wasn’t as bad as having a grand organization in a big chapel. Just then, one of the groom’s brothers started playing the wedding march and all eyes turned to the back.
Despite her mother’s earlier warnings to not stare impolitely, Elizabeth did just that as Julia emerged from the house. All murmurs faded away. Not one person was looking front now.
Julia was dressed in a gorgeous pale-blue gown that trailed behind just slightly. Her arms were interlaced with lavender lace, and the bouquet she held was made of lilies and forget-me-nots as well as roses. Her shoes, though barely noticeable under the dress were a simple flat-footed pair of flowery red church shoes.
By the time Julia stood with Allen, someone was already sniffling. Elizabeth herself was on the verge of happy tears. Between focusing on not crying and trying to discreetly find who was sniffling, she did not hear the end of the ceremony. Her mother nudged her and told her to pay attention to her surroundings. When Elizabeth did, she realized everyone was heading to the picnic tables for the after-feast.
With a forced smile, she made her way with her family to a table and found herself wedged between two other family members she’d never met. With a suppressed sigh, she made it her mission to get through the rest of the afternoon.
