Meeting Felix
Rial Sol was four when he met Felix, he was exploring the neighborhood park, his hands clutching a picture book about magical creatures. His royal purple hair-freshly dyed by his older sister, much to their mother’s amusement-gleamed in the autumn sunlight.
He was looking for a Niffler, or maybe a Puffskein, but so far, all he’d found were squirrels and a very mad magpie. Rial plopped down on a bench, swinging his legs and opening his book, deciding to read until something exciting happened.
As soon as he got comfortable he heard it-a shriek of laughter, followed by a flash of white darting past. Rial startled, looked up from his book to see a boy about his age, hair so white it looked like snow. Rial watched as he was getting chased by a dog, but he didn’t seem scared. In fact, he was grinning, his eyes, a gold with a ring of blue, full of mischief.
The dog skidded to a stop in front of Rial, sniffing his shoes. The white haired boy followed, breathless and beaming. “Sorry about Daisy,” he said, tugging the dog’s collar. “She thinks everyone’s hiding snacks.”
Rial shook his head, smiling shyly. “I don’t have snacks at the moment. Just a book.” Rial then held it up showing them, when he saw the book the boy’s jumped with excitement.
“Is the book about dragons? I love dragons!” the boy exclaimed, sitting down next Rial without invitation. “I’m Felix. What’s your name?”
“Rial,” he replied, a little surprised by Felix’s boldness. “Wanna read with me?”
Felix nodded, and they invented stories about magical beasts and rescues. Felix made Rial laugh with his wild ideas, like a dragon who only ate jellybeans or a Niffler who stole socks instead of gold.
When the sun started set, the two boys were inseparable, giggling as they made plans for tomorrow. Rial’s mother found them giggling under a slide, with Felix’s dog curled at their feet.
From that day on, Rial and Felix were never far apart. Rial’s calm curiosity balanced Felix’s wild imagination, would make the most crazy, and carefully thought out plots.
And so a lifelong friendship began, one of two boys who would never leave each other’s side.
