✽It was late in the summer and Dylan was still counting down the days until he would finally get to attend summer camp.
The day was warm with the sun shining through the curtains of his room as he lay on his bed reading a book. Avery had gone somewhere probably with her best friend, so that left Dylan alone. That was one of the not so great perks about having your female cousin be basically your sister. Everyone needs their own time spent apart. Especially after being close for most of the summer.
Dylan still felt alone, though. He always wished that there was something he could do to make the long days spent alone pass quickly. He had had plenty of time hanging out with Avery’s cat, Jasper, but he wanted a pet of his own. One that he would be able to take to America with him since Jasper stayed with Avery.
He heard footsteps walking towards his room. They were familiar yet he couldn’t place them at first. That’s when he heard another set of footsteps. His mother’s. But who was the other person?
Dylan gasped in shock when he realized who was standing before him and what was in his hands. A cat. A cat around the same size and coat pattern as Jasper, but he was grey. Like ash.
“Is he for me?” Dylan asked in shock as his grandfather nodded and handed him the cat. The cat curled up into his arms as if he had known Dylan for more than just a few seconds.
“Yes. He is. He’s from the same litter as Jasper, but the owner decided to keep him until now. You seemed pretty lonely, so your father and I talked and decided to get him for you.” Dylan’s mother explained.
Tears welled in Dylan’s eyes but they didn’t fall. He couldn’t believe it. His own cat. So many thoughts ran through his head as the warm ball of fur snuggled closer.
“Alaska. That’s what I’ll name you.” Dylan whispered as Alaska’s ear flicked towards the sound of his voice.
Dylan smiled as he gently stroked the cat. He was perfect.
He stayed there for hours just holding the cat. It wasn’t until it got dark and he heard his mother calling him to dinner that he finally lifted the cat off of his lap and onto his bed. Alaska didn’t even notice. He just became a tiny, tight ball of fur on a bed. ✽
