They were gone. She remembers the few family dinners, the rare visits here and there.

Sinclair scales the stairs to the owlery silently, her expression, blank, yet her mind thrummed with an ache. Mr.Montague flew to his perch to greet her once she reached the top. In this moment, it seemed as if the air around her turned stale and silent. The girl presses her finger against the edge of her letter in a rare moment of hesitation, before handing it to her trusty owl. She caresses Monty's beak lovingly and feeds him a treat, "Get this to Dad, Monty." Her owl scarfs down the dead mouse, and flies off with a quiet flutter.

The contents of her letter echo in her mind.
Dad, I still can't believe aunt Margaret and uncle Paul are gone.
Sinclair watches Monty's figure in the sky. I can't believe I feel nothing.
I hope you and Mum are managing alright. If I could, I would have stayed home to be with you both.
It's just the polite to say, isn't it?
I didn't know auntie and uncle all that well but I know they were both well loved just by the people who came to their funeral.
Perhaps I didn't know them deep enough to be upset. Or perhaps, I'm just grieving differently.
The others who were in the car crash, will they recover alright?
Another polite thing to say.
Take care of yourselves. I'm thinking of you both.
- Sinclair
I'd rather be here...because being with you just reminds me of how little I'm feeling.

Sinclair's lips purse ever so slightly, a difficult expression in her eyes.
