Lucille had finally finished all her school shopping. It had taken a few days to get everything done, but, at last, she was free to enjoy her summer. Of course, enjoying her summer meant she would just be poring over her Hogwarts letters and supplies until it was time for summer camp. Lucille walked next to her mother, the pair on their way to Florean Fortescue's Ice Cream Parlour. Lucille was excited, almost vibrating with pent-up energy, and every few steps she would throw in a little skip for good measure. Her mother would laugh and tell her to calm down, but Lucille's mind raced with thoughts of Hogwarts.

They had almost reached the ice cream parlour now. "Looking at you, are we sure getting more sugar in you is the best decision right now?" Her mother laughed. "Mother, please," Lucille said with a mock scowl. "I'll be perfectly alright, thank you very much. In fact, now I'll have the largest sundae available on the menu," she announced.

When her mother didn't respond, Lucille looked up, confused. She had expected to be jokingly scolded for her bad decisions, but her mother wasn't looking at her anymore. Instead, she was looking out into the crowded alley, brow furrowed. Lucille tried to follow her gaze, to see exactly who her mother was staring at, but there were so many people, she couldn't identify what might have caused this reaction.

Her mother halted, eyes still fixated. Lucille paused, even more confused. "What are you looking at?" she asked finally, her voice a bit unsure.

"Is that..? Her mother started, and her voice trailed off again. Lucille looked in the direction again, and now she finally saw who her mother had spotted. A girl and her mother headed in their direction. The girl seemed around Lucille's age, but they were both strangers. She quieted then, understanding that now was not the time for her to speak.

Rosaline and her mum Elowen were going to Diagon Alley to prepare for her first semester. Rosaline was excited about going to Hogwarts. She even imagined meeting some fellow Hogwarts students in Diagon Alley. Elowen had set aside her time for the day to go shopping with her daughter. Rosaline secretly felt relieved to have her mum being with her. Though she had already visited Diagon Alley many times, She was glad her mum could be with her to prepare all the things.

The afternoon in July was pretty hot. After checking off some items on their shopping list, Rosaline said, “Mum, it’s way too hot. Shouldn’t we get some ice cream?”
Elowen smiled, “Yeah, I figured you’d say that.”
They brought all the stuff they had bought for school, including lots of new books that weren’t even on the supply list, they came to get some ice cream.

When they walked together, Rosaline held her mum’s hand and gave it a gentle, playful swing. Suddenly, Elowen’s hand stopped the swing. Rosaline looked up and noticed a serious but also nostalgic look on her mother’s face.
She followed her sight and saw a stunning woman, she was looking at them too. By her side, is a girl with dark hair around Rosaline’s age. They seemed like they have just finished their shopping too.
Rosaline didn’t know who they were. She felt confused and curious, with a feeling that this moment must meant something for her mum.

Elowen’s eyes brighten up, and said, “Adelaide?”
Elowen still held Rosaline’s hand, they came closer to the woman and the girl.
Her expression softened, greeted to the woman, “How have you been, Adelaide?”

Rosaline was still a little confused. But she felt it’s a great chance to meet a new girl. She smiled gently, and looked into the girl’s dark eyes, whispered, “Hi, I’m Rosaline. Are you going to Hogwarts too? I think we shouldn’t interrupt them. They seem serious.”
Rosaline reached into her pocket, wanting to find some sherbet lemons. Finally, she found them.
“Do you want some sugar? I really love lemon drops,” she grinned.

"Oh my God, Elowen, I thought it was you!" Lucille looked up to see her mother with a bright expression on her face, greeting the other woman. They began to converse, and Lucille understood that the two had been close once. Perhaps they had lost touch in some way, but Lucille knew this certainly wasn't the right moment to interrupt and ask.

She started a little when the other girl spoke, quickly shifting her gaze to her. She had been so focused on piecing together what she could, that she had completely forgotten to greet the girl her age. Lucille smiled warmly at her words.

"Agreed," she said. "It seems like this conversation could go on a while." She looked up at her mother again to find the two women now engaged in animated conversation. Lucille could tell her mother was overjoyed to see this woman.

Once again, the other girl called for her attention, for good this time. "Oh, thank you! Yes, please," Lucille said, extending her hand out, palm up, for the other girl to hand her the lemon drop. "I love citrus flavors," she commented.

She observed the girl a bit more closely now, especially the supplies she was carrying. Lucille was sure that the girl was carrying some first year school supplies for Hogwarts, and figured that she was here school shopping as well.

"I'm Lucille. I'm starting my first year at Hogwarts this September. Excuse me for spying, but I think you are, too? I think I recognize some of the books you're carrying from the supply list." She hoped the girl wouldn't think her rude for looking. After all, it wasn't like Lucille had searched her bags or something. She had simply stated what she saw in plain sight.

“I haven’t seen you for so long! Do you have anything planned later, I’d love to catch up with you,” Elowen said delightedly.
Rosaline had seen her mum bump into other friends many times, but this time was different. Elowen and this woman must be friends from long time ago.

The girl seemed started when Rosaline talked to her. Rosaline felt a little sorry but as the girl accepted her lemon drop, Rosaline relaxed more. The taste of the candy spread in her mouth, sour but sweet. She loved making friends, but she often got in her head about how she performed when meeting for the first time.

“I love citrus flavor too. I also really like the ones that come in lollipop shapes.” Rosaline responded to the girl’s comment.

She heard the girl introduce herself, and Rosaline gave her a warm smile. When Rosaline heard the girl mention Hogwarts, her eyes lit up with interest.
“Hi, Lucille! Don’t worry about the spying, I’m just so happy I can meet a real Hogwarts student! And yes, I'll be a first-year student this semester. I don’t have any siblings, so I haven’t had the chance to talk about this feeling much.” She rambled on a bit because of her excitement. Soon she felt shy, and her face flushed a little.

Then she added, “Which house do you think you’ll be in? Everyone in my family is either a Ravenclaw or a Slytherin. It’s hard to imagine being sorted into other houses, but if so, that’ll be cool for me.” She tilted her head and gave Lucille a curious look.

Lucille smiled widely. Just yesterday, she'd been asking another 1st year student this same question. Funny how now that she'd just met this girl, she should ask Lucille the same question. The girl was excited, and it made Lucille relax completely. She was often used to having far more energy than other people, so when she was around people who shared it, she felt a bit more willing to freely express her enthusiasm.

"My brother was a Hufflepuff, and my sister was a Slytherin. They would always tell me about their Hogwarts stories, but both of them have graduated now, so I don't have any recent stories about the castle. I get how you feel, though. Growing up, I would be so excited for the holidays just so I could see them again and hear their stories." Lucille paused. She knew she couldn't relate to the girl's exact feeling, but she tried her best. She continued, on a bit of a ramble now. "I'm certain I'll be a Gryffindor. They're supposed to be all bold and adventurous, and I can't imagine fitting better in a different house." Lucille was quite confident about this. It wasn't just her own judgment; her family all agreed that Lucille behaved like a Gryffindor, so she was sure that's where she'd end up. "I'm quite confident about where I'll go, but my siblings have told me of some people who the sorting hat placed in a completely unexpected house. I wouldn't mind it, either. It would just be a different sort of adventure." Lucille's voice rose a little in pitch, an indication of her excitement.

"What are you most excited about? Apart from the magic, I suppose. I can't wait for Care of Magical Creatures in our second year. Could you imagine meeting a hippogriff, or a pegasus, or a dragon?" Of course, Lucille knew that it was quite unlikely to be thrown to a dragon in your first Care of Magical Creatures class, but she was so infatuated by magizoology that she couldn't help but wish that she could meet one of those amazing, powerful creatures.

Rosaline listened to the girl speak. The girl was confident and energetic. Rosaline’s concern about being too excited faded. Rosaline grinned at the girl as she continued.

She nodded at the Hogwarts story part, thinking of her older cousins always trying to bluff her with some ridiculous ones. She had always wanted a sibling or two, cousins were great, but they didn’t live together in the end. She felt for her experience, because she had to wait until vacation to see her cousins too. But maybe it wasn’t the same feeling. She thought about it for a moment.

She responded to the girl, “Though I don’t have any siblings, I have four cousins. Some of them have already graduated. Age gap is real. They like to make up some stories to bluff me. I wonder if you’ve had the same experience too. Did your siblings ever bluff you too?”
She paused a moment and continued, “I think cousins and siblings still aren’t the same, but I can relate to you about the vacation part. The rest of the year, I don’t see them much.”

Rosaline listened attentively to the girl. She thought the girl with all the confidence must be a Gryffindor. It’s a perfect match. She began to wonder if she would be sorted into Gryffindor or not. She replied to her, “I think you’d be a great Gryffindor!” She smiled at her warmly.
“I once heard a rumor that if you really want to go to another house, the sorting hat would change its mind. But I don’t know if it’s true or not,” Rosaline’s stormy blue eyes sparkled as she spoke beamingly about the rumor.

“Oh, I’m excited to get a chance to meet all the magical creatures. I cannot wait to see them. I heard that hippogriffs are polite to humans as long as humans respect them first!” Rosaline seemed as excited as the girl.

She added, “I’m looking forward to Potions! I have already read the textbook on potions before. I think it’s a lot like those experiments in the Muggle school.” Rosaline paused and hesitated, “Ah! I forgot I’m talking to a witch. Sorry, I sometimes mix up. I’m a half-blood. I just assumed that everyone should know both Muggle stuff and Wizard stuff like I do.” She had made this mistake before. She needed to laugh it off on some occasions.

Lucille listened intently as Rosaline talked. She certainly had a lot to say, which Lucille quite liked. She shook her head with a little laugh when Rosaline said her cousins would bluff to her. She didn't think Gen or Ollie had ever done that. Gen was too strict, and Ollie was too softhearted. The two of them had had a great part in raising Lucille, so she doubted the idea had ever come to their mind, though. That could partly be the reason Lucille was so quick to believe what people said. It would never occur to her that someone was lying.

"I think Gen and Ollie were far too preoccupied to do something like that. I can't remember it, at least," Lucille said in an almost off-hand manner. Her eyes widened when Rosaline said she would be a great Gryffindor, and she wondered if she said it just to be polite. Lucille really wanted to be a good Gryffindor, and Rosaline's words gave her a little bit of comfort.

"Not that I don't think I won't be getting into Gryffindor, but that does make me feel better. Although, I suppose the other houses would be nice as well. It's not that I dislike the houses themselves; I'm just not sure if I'd fit in them." Lucille hoped she wasn't coming across as thinking Gryffindor was superior, because she really didn't.

Her ears had perked up when Rosaline spoke of hippogriffs, but the next thing she said made Lucille even more excited. "No way!" she almost squealed. "I'm a half-blood, too! I've studied in Muggle school so far. And, between you and me, I do hope potions is better than those experiments. God, I disliked them." Lucille shook her head a little, and then looked at Rosaline with a huge grin. It was clear that their somewhat shared backstory had made Lucille feel more excited than she had before. This was definitely the most energetic she'd been since they started talking.

Rosaline listened carefully when Lucille responded. Lucille’s siblings sounded really nice. It piqued her interest to know what their relationships were like.
“What’s your relationship with them like? Though you and them are few years apart, hearing you say they told you those Hogwarts stories, I guess you and they are pretty close,” Rosaline asked curiously. She hoped the question wouldn’t come off as too rude.

Rosaline replied to what Lucille’s comment about the houses, “I’m pretty sure you won’t need to change the Sorting Hat’s mind,” she said with a smile. She felt Lucille’s little uncertainty. “I wasn’t just being polite saying that you’ll be a great Gryffindor. I mean it!” Rosaline added reassuringly.

“I can relate to you about the fit in. I think I can handle a new environment, but the people and the atmosphere in the house is what I’m a little nervous about if I can fit in or not.” She said contemplatively, starting to imagine what she would be like in the four houses. “But I think the sorting hat will perfectly do its job.”

She noticed Lucille’s excitement when they talked about the magical creatures. It felt like they shared the same excitement about the new semester. When Rosaline realized Lucille was a half-blood too, her worry of being weird vanished.

“Oh my god, what a coincidence! I studied in a Muggle school too. I guess you could tell when I mentioned the experiments,” Rosaline grinned cheerfully.

“Did you get tutored in magic too? I sometimes think that going to the Muggle school and also being tutored in magic exhaust me. But I do like to learn, so the happy side and the tired side kind of balance each other out.”

Rosaline had grown up with her pureblood cousins and wizard-born or Muggle friends, but she hadn’t had many chances to meet someone who was also a half-blood and shared those experiences. She felt strangely delighted.

Rosaline was just as excited as Lucille was, and it was a welcome realization. She found them talking about so many different things all at once, Lucille almost found it difficult to keep track. Almost. Her thoughts ran a mile a minute, and she let Rosaline say all she had to say before speaking. What came out was a jumble of words, her thoughts slipping from one subject to the next.

"They're a lot older than me, so they were never really as teasing as most siblings usually are. I guess, in a way, they played a great part in raising me, since they would look after me a lot growing up. Gen is a bit strict with me, and Ollie is more forgiving and patient." Talking of her siblings made her voice a little warmer, her expression a bit more distant, as she recalled them.

"I'm sure you could fit in anywhere. Rosaline. You seem-" she paused, searching for the right word. "-kind. If people at Hogwarts are anything like me, they would truly welcome your conversation."

Although they hadn't spoken a lot yet, Lucille felt the warmth radiating off Rosaline. She seemed accepting, eager to speak to anyone. When Rosaline had mentioned Muggle school, Lucille had perked up, but when she spoke of being tutored, questions began to arise in her mind. Had that been necessary? Surely her mother would have gotten a tutor for her if it had. Would she be behind the other students?

"Uh, no." Lucille said uncertainly. "I've only been to Muggle school. No tutors. I hardly know anything about magic. I'm sorry, was that necessary?" There was an unease in her voice as her worry set in. She seemed a bit lost in her thoughts now, tucking a strand of hair behind her ear, more a fidget than anything else.

Hearing Lucille talk about her siblings made Rosaline wonder if she had any siblings and what their relationships would be like.

Rosaline felt a little flattered when Lucille complimented her. It made Rosaline less worried about fitting in at the new school. “Wow, thank you! I hope I can fit in like you said. If there are many people like you at Hogwarts, then it must be an amazing place!” Rosaline said cheerfully. Her eyes brightened.

Noticing Lucille’s spirit seemed a little down, Rosaline realized she probably shouldn’t have mentioned the tutor that way. She had a bad habit of assuming people lived the same way she did, but that wasn’t true at all.

I really should think before I say anything. Rosaline reflected.

Tried to fix this mistake, she responded softly, “Ah, sorry. I didn’t mean to let you think tutoring is necessary. Initially, I just wanted to learn more about the magic, so I asked my mom for a tutor. I don’t think it’ll make that much of a difference.”

She gave Lucille a warm smile, “I’m pretty sure you’ll be just as good as other firsties! I’m not better than anyone, really. I have the same experience with a real wand as everyone else. In this case, it’s near zero experience.” She looked into Lucille’s eyes and tried to convey an encouraging expression.

“By the way, since we are standing here. Would you like to get some ice cream,” Rosaline asked. She noticed that she and Lucille’s moms might need a little longer to chat. She thought that maybe they could just go buy some ice cream.
