Setting: The Great Lake’s Shores
Time: Afternoon, on the 12th of September
Outfit: Hogwarts school uniform.
Amelia Lerelle sat, perched on an emerald green, velvet-like patch of grass that overlooked the serene beauty of the Great Lake. Amelia’s pale legs lay lazily in front of her, her brown hair fell to carefully frame her face and her light blue eyes were twinkling brightly in the afternoon sun. No one could ever guess the fast paced train of the first year’s thoughts compared to her utterly relaxed demeanor.

It was true that the Hufflepuff had come to sit by the water to finish a little homework and revision for her last class, but her textbook hadn’t yet been opened and her eyes were situated firmly on the water.

As little Amelia looked into the depths of the lake, she wondered what was hidden under its surface and she couldn’t help but let her mind run away. Of course, her books had informed her of some of the creatures and plants that inhabited the lake but that was not where the girl’s interest at this moment lay. She wanted to know more. The secrets it held.

A small, relaxed smile crept over the first year’s face as the girl’s attention became lost to one of her occasional and ridiculous daydreams. In her dreamy state, instead of traveling through the castle and towards the library, like the real Amelia would do, this Amelia did not take time in finding an ancient book that revealed many secrets about the Great Lake. The dream Amelia began to wade into the freezing water. Soon she was paddling under the water, and had discovered a breed of seaweed that had an amazing impact on potions…

A loud buzz of a passing bee brought her to her senses. Delusional. She must be. And yet, an amused grin passed across the girl’s face. How was she going to get through a whole year if she was already dreaming of breaking the rules? And becoming a well-recognized wizard?

Perhaps, she was a little tired, or maybe she had a newfound, rather odd, sense of creativity. Either way, it seemed this would be the perfect time to pull out her homework, quill and ink, and, before an idea of trespassing into the headmaster’s office occurred, she had begun to read her homework. Her focus was now sustained as she sat, textbook by her side, quill in hand and notes being written in a swirling font. Perhaps the first year had just found a favorite study place, or maybe, she was about to find something even more important.

Nothing other than I hope you like it!!
Piper had spent the good part of the last hour in the library, curled up in a corner, absorbed in a book on magical creatures of the British Isles. It was quiet there - but not the kind of quiet that she liked. It was the kind of quiet that the emptiness feeds on, the kind that really makes her feel. Makes her feel disconnected.
Lost.
Alone.
Falling into the dark, endless pit that grows in the silence.
It was too heavy. Too enclosed. Just too much.
She needed air. Movement. Sky.

Piper wasn’t really sure why she ended up walking towards the lake. Yes she wanted air and to stretch her legs, but why the lake? Maybe it was because she thought there’d be more people there. Or maybe because she thought that the slight chill of the afternoon air would help her. But she found her feet moving her there and she didn’t resist.

With her satchel over her shoulder, Piper continued to wander towards the lake. She pushed down the feelings. She pushed down the memories. The memories of being five and sitting at the top of the stairs while the grown-ups whispered in the kitchen. Of the silence and the cries that broke it. Of the quiet after the cries. The kind of quiet that wasn’t safe, that meant something was gone.

So she focused on the scent of damp earth and the sound of the wind brushing the water. She focused on walking, walking and not stopping. She focused on the shimmering lake, coming closer with every step. She focused on the sky and the freedom it gave. She focused on anything but the lurking memories.

She wasn’t expecting to find anyone there - not someone she knew anyway. But there she was, sitting by the water, Amelia. It was the girl from the train. Someone Piper knew…kind of.

Piper paused and looked over at Amelia. She watched as Amelia sat with her legs stretched in front of her like she had all the time in the world. She watched as a small smile crept onto her face with her eyes on the lake and her mind somewhere else, and Piper couldn’t help smiling too. The image struck Piper in a way she didn’t expect. Amelia looked exactly how Piper used to feel when her mum would show her something and help her build little trinkets. Like nothing else mattered and her thoughts could drift freely and wildly - free of the constraints of reality, trying to find more, something deeper.

Piper felt herself smile again. She seemed to have made up her mind. Adjusting the strap of her bag, she walked forward. As Piper got closer she hesitated.
What if she doesn’t remember me? Piper thought.
I think the more important question is: what if she doesn’t want you here. Came the everpresent voice.
No. Piper thought back. That wouldn’t happen… would it?
It might. The voice came again. Imagine what would happen if you walked up and she turned you away. Imagine what she could tell people. How you wanted to sit with her and she didn’t want you there. The hope in your eyes. The sadness when she declines you. Think about that first, and then make up your mind.
She wouldn’t do that… would she? Piper thought.
Well you never know, the voice said faintly, you never know….
And then, as quick as it appeared the voice was gone.

Piper stood, frozen, thinking over what had been laid out in front of her. Should she say hi? Should she just leave? She didn’t know! But standing there hovering wasn’t going to solve anything, so she continued. She continued on to talk to Amelia and see where this interaction took them.

Piper approached slowly. “Hi,” she said gently, “It’s Amelia, right? I’m Piper, one of the people you met on the train, remember?

She felt a little awkward standing while Amelia was sitting down. “May I join you?” Piper asked. “It’s okay if you don’t want me too, but….” she trailed off. Piper had come to the lake to find a different kind of quiet, but maybe she needed a friend too.

Words rushed freely across Amelia’s page like the breeze that gently twirled by her. Her ink flowed into her perfect script akin to the waters of the Great Lake below. Almost half a page had been written in barely five minutes, and so far it made perfect sense and was entirely accurate. This place was truly the best study spot ever.

So very lost in the thoughts of her mind, or at least the academic ones, that she was now spilling onto her parchment, Amelia took little notice of what was happening around her. It was rather odd how often she found herself in a state like this. It was, however, that Amelia didn’t notice the girl with chestnut golden hair until Piper had spoken her introductory lines.

Amelia had come for the happy quiet that the lake offered her to focus, and somehow it had never occurred to her that she might end up talking to someone. Talking to a friend. It certainly wasn’t at all what she had planned, but often the future doesn’t go as one might expect. Sometimes it ends up far better.

With a bright smile of genuine excitement, Amelia piled her paper and books onto the lush grass and turned to Piper, “Pip!” She cried in surprise. “Yes, I’m Amelia! Of course, I remember you!” She grinned with a slightly unusual cheerfulness, either an effect of a successful study session or a certain liking of Piper that had occurred on their first meeting. It was probably a combination.

Amelia couldn’t help notice that Piper seemed slightly uncomfortable as she asked to join her - a feeling Amelia knew all too well. It was somehow as if Pip’s discomfort substituted for Amelia’s, and Amelia only felt the tiniest bit of nerves creep out. Gesturing to the place by her side, she said warmly, “Of course!”

It was after a moment that Amelia, feeling as though she should bring up a new alley of conversation, spoke. “I haven’t seen you around since our first day,” Amelia observed in a relaxed manner, “though I saw you getting sorted into Slytherin, right? Congratulations!” In all truth, Amelia had been a little disappointed that she hadn’t known anyone in her house, but so far she was doing rather well.

Amelia turned to the lake for a moment, half wondering if this was all a dream. In a way, it was far too perfect and dreamlike. A magical school. A beautiful lake. A friend. If she had been told this was her future a year ago she would have applauded their creativity and laughed. It was only the fact that nothing truly unusual had happened so far that Amelia believed she might not be dreaming.

Hope you like it! Sorry it took so long and is so short.
Piper felt relieved when Amelia gestured for her to sit down. And just like their first encounter, she hurriedly took a seat so she couldn’t be turned away.

It had been almost two weeks since they arrived at Hogwarts. Almost two weeks since Piper had walked into that compartment, worried and stressed. Almost two weeks - but it felt like a lifetime.

Piper nodded when Amelia mentioned her sorting. “Yeah. You were sorted into… Hufflepuff, right?”

She hesitated for a second, then added, “How has your first couple of weeks been?”

Piper had not yet met anyone in her house - not properly, anyway. Maybe a few waves here and there, but otherwise, nothing. To be completely honest, Piper felt lonely. Not in the I feel so lonely I might cry sort of way, but not in the way she was used to either. It was like a growing emptiness that was more present than an emptiness should be.

It wasn’t like the one she felt for her mother - not that deep, but still not shallow either. She longed for some connection. Someone other than herself. Someone she could talk to, even if it was only for a few minutes a day. Someone she could listen to. Just… someone to be there.

Piper hadn’t met anyone like that yet. But she hoped—possibly more than anything—that she would meet that person soon.

And maybe, just maybe, it would be the girl sitting beside her.

Amelia couldn't help but let a shy smile spread across her face as Piper took her spot beside her. Piper, or 'Pips', as she had nicknamed the girl in their first meeting, seemed like the sort of person Amelia had always wanted to have as a friend. Of course, back home that would have been highly unlikely. But here? The girl could only cross her fingers.

The Hufflepuff responded to the Slytherin's question with a small nod, before proceeding to speak in a soft voice, "I suppose it has been rather good. Hogwarts is pretty, well, amazing, if you know what I mean..." Even if Piper wasn't new to the world of magic like little Amelia and had been brought up in the world of broomsticks and jinxes, she couldn't help but think that she wouldn't be the only one who was still in awe with the place. "The teachers and the lessons are quite good, and everyone seems nice..." She trailed off, realising that Pip probably had no interest in her lengthy analysis of the magic school, nor discussing her upsetting lack of friendships that she had made.

It wasn't that she was disliked, in fact, everyone was certainly friendly. It was more that she didn't seem to have come to a close bond with anyone so far, and with no farm boys to entertain her anymore, she found herself feeling a little lonely. But, as she knew her grandmother would assure her in her cheerful manner, two weeks really wasn't that long. A small twinge of sadness traipsed onto Amelia's face and she hastily wiped it away. "So, uh, what about you?"

Pulling at a strand of the luscious green grass with her small hand, she glanced towards Piper waiting for her response. Looking at her fellow first year, she couldn't help wonder if one day she would be confidently walking around with someone to call a close friend, like the older students she had seen. A best friend.
