Pyce was more than excited to be at Diagon Alley. A place they had been many times. But this time was different! This time they were there for school! They were going to go to Hogwarts!
Hecate, trailing a little behind his brother, was equally excited. Their poor mother, Donna, was just behind them both, gray torbie cat perched on her shoulder after it fled from Pyce’s. Too much movement over there.
“What are we doing first?” Pyce asked, subtly trying to make their way over to Fortescue's Ice Cream Parlor.
“Not ice cream.” Donna said, reigning in her children. “We’re going to get you sized for robes, and then see what to do after that.”
“That’s no fun.” The twins chorused together.
“Fun is for later. We need to get your school supplies.”
“Since Pyce and I are the same size, can they just go for tailoring while I-”
“Hey! That’s no fair! I want to-”
“Boys!” Pyce and Hecate immediately stopped fighting. Donna sighed. “All three of us are going to Madam Malkin’s. Only one of you needs to get fitted, we’ll base the other’s on that. Please decide now, before we get there. The other one will find the rest of the things we need there.” Both twins looked at each other, the fire of competition in their eyes.
“Whoever gets there first gets to choose!” Hecate cheered before dashing off. Pyce, who barely had time to process the words, got the gist pretty quickly and darted after their brother. Donna didn’t have the energy to stop them, besides, the crowd would likely slow them down.
Unsurprisingly, Hecate made it there first. Pyce arrived a few seconds later, panting and out of breath.
“That’s *huff* unfair *huff* you know I’m *huff* slower than you *wheeze*” Pyce leaned heavily on the wall of the building.
“That was the point, yes.” Hecate said with a cheeky smile. Pyce only glared at him. “Anyway, you’re getting fitted.”
“Aww, but it’s my birthday!” Pyce whined
“It’s both of our birthdays, you dolt.” Hecate lightly bonked his brother on the head.
The two continued waiting outside the door as their mother made her way through the crowded narrow streets. Pyce was still trying to catch their breath when she finally made it to the door.
“In we go,” Donna gently nudged her children into the shop. It was loud, filled with chattering students, many first years, and their parents. The shop was filled with all sorts of clothing; School robes, warm robes, dresses, scarves, gloves, and more. It was a very cozy feeling store. At least, that’s what Pyce thought. A shame they couldn’t explore it.
Donna was guiding Pyce by their shoulders over to where other people were getting fitted for robes. Out of the corner of their eye, Pyce could see Hecate wandering deeper into the crowds and racks of clothes. A twinge of jealousy ran through them at the sight, but it quickly petered out when their mother introduced them to Madam Malkin herself.
Small talk was had, though Pyce typically didn’t know how to talk with adults outside of their family, conversation with Madam Malkin was different. Comfortable.
“And what house are you hoping to be in?” She asked.
“Ravenclaw! It’s where all the smartest students go! But my friend and mum are both Slytherins. My brother wants to be in Slytherin too. So I wouldn’t mind being sorted there.”
“Very good houses, all of them. I’m sure whichever you end up in, you’ll make the most of it. Interested in any sports?” She said as she pinned the bottom of the robe up to fit the short not-yet-first-year.
“Broom racing!” Pyce chirped. “I really want to fly around on a broom! Mum won’t let me on hers until I’m older. She thinks I'll fall.”
“Better safe than sorry, yes?”
“I suppose.”
It was then that Hecate finally came back from wherever he had been in the store.
“Pie! Did you know that this place has dragonhide gloves?” Hecate asked, his tone something playful. Something... Plotting, maybe?
“They do?” Pyce replied, excitement filling their voice.
“Hmm, not on the list though,” Hecate sighed, as if he was the one who would be concerned by this.
“Wait- Get the dragonhide ones! Get the dragonhide ones!” Pyce squeaked out, trying not to move as their robe was being hemmed. “Oh please Kate! You’ll be my favorite brother in the whole world!” Donna shot Pyce a disapproving look.
“I’m your only brother in the whole world.” Hecate rolled his eyes, but reached for the gloves.
“Hecate. Do not get the dragonhide gloves.” She said warningly. Hecate froze.
“But-”
“Pyce. You’re almost done. Just hold still.”
“I’m sure you’ll be able to get the dragonhide gloves another time, dear.” Pyce didn’t respond. After everything was said and done, Pyce, Hecate, their mother, several robes, hats, and two pairs of regular old gloves were at the check out. Donna purchased the items, and before she could get a word out, both twins were out the door and back into the alley.
“Where to next?” Hecate, standing next to Pyce, held up the list for them both to see.
“Mum’s gonna say books, so I say we go for our cauldrons.” The two gave each other a look before bursting out laughing.
“Cauldrons it is!” Hecate started leading the way. Pyce followed three steps before looking around at the shops. He was going the wrong way. Pyce jogged up and caught their brother by the sleeve, guiding him the correct way to the shop.
