Phoenix was not fond of Diagon Alley.

It wasn't, of course, the magic that enveloped her, that was certain. No, it was the people—the sheer volume of them—who were simply too loud, and too numerous for her sanity. There were always crowds of people, all rushing around and standing too near one another, speaking too quickly, and needing not just a look but words and… a real connection.

She walked through this crowd of individuals with her hood on, wearing it like a shield that guarded her as much against the scorching summer sun as against the unwanted attention of being seen by any of these individuals.

She was not even sure why she'd lost concentration. The bookstore had been full, and she did not approve of the clerk's smile at her like she was an awkward little first-year instead of someone who knew exactly what she was doing.

And so she went for a walk. She walked along deserted side streets and wove in among a group of shops, on and on until the din of voices that surrounded her slowed to a hum that was less suffocating. In a twist of fate, she stood in front of the foreboding-appearing shop called the Magical Menagerie of her own accord.

It was not the sort of place she would have gone to in ordinary times. The window was packed to the top with a bewildering selection of cages, a jumble of animals, and an absolutely stunning number of bright colors, making for a very lively display. Suspended over all of them, a wooden sign creaked back and forth in the wind, as if daring her to come in and see what they had.

She wasn't into animals, not like that. Or, more accurately, she didn't believe they would love her back.

And still, something compelled her forward.

The doorbell over the entrance door clanged as she came in, and the scent of straw and fur and hot, pungent spice hit her in the nose. Then the sounds—the scratch-scrapes, the growling, the flapping of wings—blending together in a kind of natural chaos. Phoenix remained in the doorway, stiff-backed, and questioned whether to go back and walk home.

Standing there, she suddenly felt the slightest sound reaching her ears. It was not a whine or a chirp, but instead, more of a breath, calm and measured, that permeated the air surrounding her in a constant cadence.

She slowly turned her head to the side.

The Egyptian Mau lay stretched across the top of a corner cage, silvery fur shining like moonlight, tucked paws beneath it as it observed the room. No pacing, no crying. Still.

Phoenix came forward without hesitation. Her eyes met the cat's, and she sensed a still, adult intelligence in them—not curiosity, exactly, no, but a sense of sharp observation. It was staring at her with an intensity that made her feel it was seeing something more, something further, and for some reason she couldn't quite pinpoint, she felt obligated to the cat not to look away.

The shopkeeper stirred. "She's fussy, that one," the woman said. "Most children would prefer something flashier. Owls, toads, puffskeins. That cat? She picks."

Phoenix did not stir. Instead, she reached out—a hand not to touch, but to give.

The Mau descended gradually, padded closer, and nuzzled her nose against Phoenix's knuckles.

Phoenix's heart thudded once, sharply, and then steadied.

It was meaningless. It did not have to be.

"I will take her," she whispered, her eyes on her and not flinching in the slightest.

The shopkeeper did look surprised. "Sure? She's high-strung. Bit aloof.".

Phoenix shrugged least of all. "So am I." The journey was quick. The carrier wasn't needed—the Mau walked beside her, leashless, as though they'd been taking walks together for years. No meowing. No tripping at her feet. Just quiet. She briefly dropped her eyes among the sea of faces in the dense crowd. "I'm going to call you Zephyra, I think," she whispered. "If that's okay with you?" The Mau blinked slowly. Approvingly, perhaps. Phoenix did not smile. She did not frown, either. For once, she did not feel entirely alone.
